Nissan hints to a new RWD sportscar?

That thing is uglier than sin. It looks like they did a line of crack off a Bluebird dash and then got to drawing. Nismo version has potential but they honestly need to plain-ify it. Right now it looks grotesque and horrifying.

So here's a question:

At what price do we see the IDx being a sales success globally? On the flip side, what kind of price will Nissan have to charge in order to make a profit on what'll probably be a low volume vehicle?

IDx = $18-19k USD for an entry level, 1.6L non-turbo model, 6-speed manual/auto/cvt.

IDx Nismo = $21-23k USD, obviously 1.6L turbo, 6-speed manual only.

Win.

What does the bottle under the armrest in the nismo version contain? :dopey:

Go-Go juice. I want the NISMO! Proper three box designs are surely lacking. The 2-Series is cool but, way too expensive and too much gadgetry and heavy for its size. I miss the E21. Other than the E30 M3, this Iis the best body shape of the 3-Series for me.

As far as new cars go, This Nissan needs to happen. I'd love it to become the next 510 or Bluebird SSS type car and have a cult following for a long time. The original Sentra SE-R had the size, shape and engine. It just needed that RWD configuration. This is it.

Na, that would be equivalent to a fiesta over here. I'd put it just shy of the BRZ/GT86/FR-S and the Nismo just over.

Same. a Turbo would see it at maybe $34K(AUD); IDx @$29K+/-(AUD)

Edit: Or, imagine them at the same price. The IDx would be set up more interface user friendly and nicely appointed to look upscale. The NISMO pure racer. just depends on trim and type of materials used.

I'm talking US prices though, that Nismo price would be very competitive against the FR-S over here.

I like those prices but as with the BRZFRS, they will be higher than expected.

If Nissan tries to sell it for more than the FR-S they might as well not even bother.
I think they'll try to come in a few hundred $ below the brz with the nismo if the power is equivalent.
Base IDx will probably cost over 20k and still be the cheapest small, sporty coupe on the market, unless I'm forgetting a cheap sporty 2dr rwd car?

MX5 thats on its way?

Do you suspect the new mx-5 will be cheaper than the current model's 24.5k starting price?
Im gonna say yes because their trying to cut weight again but more eco friendly. If the new sports coupe comes out at a later date, hopefully rotary, then that will be 30k+ US

WHich usually comes at a premium. They'll use lighter, more expensive metals to achieve their goals.

I'll stick with my 2014 Fiesta ST.

However I'm glad to see RWD making a comeback. They need to forget paddles though, save the manuals!

It want be cheap, especially not with that nismo plate on the rear but it will not be more than the 370z, even the options list wont be huge. Screens, cameras, different wheels and colour combos, not much else. Not sure the price of the 370z globally. £37k in the uk so i can see the nismo below £30k.

The NISMO might be expensive. The Civic Type-R FN2 was about $40K AUD. Type-Rs are pretty much race ready out the box. If the NISMO is that hard core (which I doubt- if it has an S-Tune or Z-Tune option), then fine. I dont see that happening if they are keeping costs down. The Juke is giving me an indication.

Nissan are doing their own thing with this body design. If it can have as much room in the back as a Golf, I think it could take owners from Minis and 86s.

Room as in rear seat? This is no hatch.

I wouldn't care about leg room anyway, if you plan on constantly carrying people back there you should probably buy a bigger car. :P

Our Megane has decent legroom in back. But its just us and a soon to be 3yo at the moment. Im way passed making room for passengers anymore. ;)

The Scirocco isnt half bad either but, a TT is out of the question. I guess it would be like the 240SX, just with better headroom. Trust, I'll be enjoying it from behind the wheel!

So Nissan just revealed their LeMans engine. A 44kg (88lbs) 1.5 liter 3 cylinder turbo that produces 400hp.

Even I have to admit that power to weight ratio is simply insane, and better than even a rotary. Now please, Nissan, use this engine in the Idx. Even if it has only half the power, even if the base isn't turbo, it will still be fantastic. And before you question it, listen to other small 3 cylinder turbo and n/a engines...because they sound better than four cylinders:

To me, they invariably sound like 90* V6 engines, such as the NSX.

I had a 2003 Daihatsu Charade with the 1L non turbo. I drove with my pregnant wife from Newcastle to the Melbourne Grand Prix and back 2000kms(1240 miles). I only spent $150 in petrol. That was 2010.

Best car I've ever owned. We still have it.

If it sounds like a Honda Beat, count me in. (I was in anyway.)

There's a metric that companies should focus on more. That power level from something you can pick up is just incredible. Very, very cool, and I'm curious where else that engine, however detuned, will be showing up over the years...

^ Interesting point in that article:
I’d like to see Nissan build both cars, a commuter version like the Freeflow and a hot and sporty Nismo variant.

Here’s why: people that like cars as something more than simply transportation devices dig the IDx. If media reports are to be believed, car ownership in the U.S. has peaked. Americans are learning ways to live without cars. Going forward, the people that buy cars are going to buy cars they’re emotionally attracted to. Now imagine if the IDx showed up packing the Juke Nismo’s 1.6-liter turbo good for something like 230 horsepower routed through a manual transmission that powered the rear wheels. Not only would I be attracted to it, I’d buy one. Moreover, people that are into cute cars like Mini Cooper and Fiat 500 would be right at home in a 160 hp IDx Freeflow. And if the first stop of Nissan’s IDx in Southern California tour is any indication, so would a whole bunch of Instagramming, chiliburger-slurping car freaks.

In conclusion: Hey Nissan! Build them!
If that's the way the trend goes, it could be an interesting time to be an enthusiast in the coming decade!
