NissanskylineN1's Build - Case Mod Finished..for now

Since my computer has overheated and melted down a lot, I try to keep things cool as possible. Whenever I start to hear it screamin' and it hits 85ºC, I turn fans, aircon's, whatever on full blast to cool it down. I've even lost some files 'cause it's overheated and shut down on it's own accord. I just call it a meltdown. :P

Tlowr4 their are easier ways to deal with overheating.

1: Turn on Thermal Throttleing in BIOS this will lower the clock of your CPU when it gets too hot, lower clock speed=lower heat(Intels Thermal Throttleing is called "SpeedStep while AMD's is called "Cool 'n' Quite")

2: Clean the PC dust impeads airflow which causes overheating

3: Upgrade to a 3rd party heatsink
Something like this one that is cheap and it will perform better than any OEM block that most PCs have.

SpeedStep and Cool'n'Quiet change the clock speed based on processor requirements, not on CPU temperature.

Their is one for throttleing those two came to mind.

For Intel it's the TCC (Thermal Control Circuit), which kicks in when the CPU reaches the TJMax. I haven't worked with AMD chips for a few years so I can't recall what system they have in place, but it's similiar.

Looks like room temperature has a lot to do with CPU temp. Its currently 17 degrees in my room and CPU temps ar hovering around 30.

Ambient temp does have an effect on CPU temp. Using fan-based cooling it's realistically impossible to go below ambient temperatures. It's also a slightly higher than linear relationship between the two (I read something on Ambient vs CPU years ago), so for example, if you're at 17C Ambient/30C CPU now, at 25C I'd expect your CPU temp to be in the low 40s.

As stated above, assuming this is at idle.

Here's a Protip, If it hasn't shut down due to thermal issues, stop worrying about it.

I really wish you'd just man up and admit you don't know what you're doing.

If I DID know what I was doing, why would I be asking questions here? However, I am not clueless at this. Jeez.. such harsh attitudes...

And also, the 30 degrees is OBVIOUSLY at idle.

So if 30 degrees is idle.. Why do you care? That's 86 degrees Fahrenheit.. That's a warm day here in California. My computer runs at around 30c as well.

If it isn't broken, don't question it.

My i5 750 (Lynnfield) idles at 35C on a cool day and 40-45 on a warm day, your temps are fine...

UPDATE: So I finally bought a new monitor a couple of days ago, and I should recieve it in a few days. Its a Dell ST2320L, 23" LED. A nice upgrade from my current 15" Dell LCD monitor from 1997. :P

I also am looking to buy a CD/DVD drive, so I don't have to use bandwidth and use CDs. Newegg's boxing day sales were kinda dissapointing... I don't know about Tiger Direct/ Canada Computers, they seem kinda sketchy.

UPDATE: So decided to play some games today (Skyrim and Arma 2) and I've been noticing my PC making some concerning fan noises. So, I decided to download Realtemp, and it reported a high of 89 degrees on the CPU. Being 9 degrees away from the TJ Max, I decided that I should get a new CPU cooler, as well as a new internet adaptor, so I can get rid of my 32 Bit Windows XP (the adaptor only works in 32 bit).

I'm most likely going to go to Canada Computers and pick up one of these tommorow:

as well as one of these:

^^ Is that the Hyper TX3? Try and see if you can get the TX3 Evo. The fan is much nicer, and a little quieter. The thermal contact is better on the base-plate too. It should only be about $5 more.

Yup, that's the TX3. I can't seem to find the TX3 EVO either on Neweg or Canada Computers. Is it possible to sand it down myself, or is that a bad idea?

^ Yeah, bad idea. It is easier to do on heatpipes than CPU's, since the 'grain', if you will, only goes one way, but to sand it down enough to the way it's designed in the Evo would more than likely break the barrier of where the thermal gunk that's inside the heatpipe is. Also if it's so much as a micro mini millimeter out, the thermal conductivity of that part of the heatpipe will be degraded by a large amount. Better off just sticking to it as it is. Really this change on the Evo makes all of a few degrees differance, really not that big of a deal. The main advantage over the Evo is the fan, it's a little better designed. Even so, I doubt you'd be hitting temps high enough to make the fan hit 100% speed, and reviews reckon that's really only when you hear it is around 85 - 100%. So it's all good. :)

T'is unfortunate that Newegg doesn't stock the Evo. Also very disappointed that NCIX doesn't either. Maybe it's like a non US/Canada product or something, who knows. But I did about 15 mins of searching on various sites and couldn't find it. Then again, you know how crap I am at finding stuff...

Theres stuff inside the heatpipes? Never knew that. Also, do you know what kind the thermal paste is that comes with the TX3? I have a Canada Computers near me that sells the TX3 for about $20. (comes to $32 with the adapter).

As for overclocking, I won't be doing that soon, but will definitely be getting a new motherboard (as I currently have and H67) as soon as I get a job. I'm also looking at getting a new case and GPU if I get the job (Work at DQ with a couple of buddies).

I want this:
Z68%20Extreme4%20Gen3(m).jpg

I'll also get a cable braiding kit.

And maybe one of these, depending on how much I'll be working:
ThumbS3.ashx

Or one of these:
EVGA-GeForce-GTX-560-Superclocked-1GB-GDDR5-PCI-E-2.0-SLI-2xDVI.jpg

And also MAYBE a new case.. thinking of one of these (I don't wanna think too far ahead, as I need a job first.):

Cable brading? Really? That's a LOT of work. I'm talking a couple of days, to take off the old connectors, heatshrink, and brading, rebraid, reheatsrink, and reapply the connectors to every single cable. It's also a lot more difficult to do on a non-modular power supply. But if it floats your boat, check out YouTube on some guides. I've never done it personally, just going by what others have told me.

Also, if you could stretch out to get a 7850/7870, your life would be complete. The performance increase over the 6870/560 is remarkable. Also, the 560 is still a decent card, but nothing like a 560Ti, since it has one of the corey thingies disabled (sorry I don't know the name). Piccie:

Ahaha, I've got a whole summer to do the cable braiding. Its a really rewarding thing to do though. I think the biggest issue here is actually finding cable braiding in the first place. I'm only going to be doing the PSU cables, and since its not modular, I'll end it outside of the PSU box, with each separate cable heat shrinked, and then heatshrinked in larger groups.

Regarding the 7850, I will have to see about that and see how much I will be working. I will consider it though. :)

^^ I would have suggested this only I'm not sure about case size and wasn't quite up to going through 100 odd posts to find which case he had

UPDATE:

So, I've ordered a few parts off of Ebay for modding my case.

-30 CM blue LED Strip 12V. I'll hook it up to a molex connector
-11" x 11" Acrylic Sheet. Will make a bigger window for the side panel of my case.
-Black, Blue and Red Paracord cable sleeving for sleeving my cables.

Total: $20

Oh yes, this is good.

Any updates you post will be great helps to me, I've gotta do a mod for a friend. I havn't done a whole heap of case modding but enough to know how to get around it all. Had to mod to fit radiators and fans in the past. He's requested a side window when he gets his new rig.

I'll keep an eye out here :D

Thanks man! I'll probably be starting on Tuesday, as that is when my Summer School exam ends (Gotta maintain that 95% in Accounting!). I will be taking a video of my whole case mod hopefully. Here's what I've got so far:

I will be cutting extra holes in my case for beter cable routing:

I got the window in! I also ordered heatshrink and an extra LED light strip.

I ran into a few problems here.

1) My paint got all scratched up, so now I have a greyish black case panel.. not noticable under my desk though
2) No U-Channel at Home Depot, had to use Electrical tape, came out.. meh
3) The damn acrylic sheet isnt clear.. its like a picture frame.. the further the object, the blurrier it is.

Note: The window isnt 100% put on, will use some glue.
