I'm a week in but my face is really itchy so I'm going to shave the beard and keep the moustache. That counts, right?

I think so.
Look for some beard oil/lotion it rehydrates your skin which stops the itching.

Use conditioner on the growth, it gets rid of some of the early prickliness. Wash it off as normal, obviously, it's just weird otherwise...

The itchiness stops after a couple of days. At least with me.
I already dusted off my comb for the beard.
