Nurburgring Race Series, Week 15
Race Cars 800HP
For Voting Results See Post#2

**Voting deadline is Tuesday, February 7, 2006, 9pm GMT (=4pm US EST)**

Once again I’m posting voting early because I’m closing voting early. I’m doing this to allow a little extra time to procure the car in case you don’t already have it in your garage. There are a couple of prize cars from difficult / lengthy events. And the other machines are a bit expensive.

I am honored to announce that Dave and I have concluded negotiations that will result in his return to the series as ‘Nurb Boss. Here’s what it took…we all have to call him Super Dave (he wanted Super Teriffic Unbelievable Dave -- long version or STUD -- short version) I don’t think I know him well enough for that – we’ll let his bride to be make that call. Also on the table was “Lord of the ‘Ring”. Additionally I had to triple his salary retroactive to the beginning of the series. 3x zero is still zero…don’t tell Dave.

Here’s what’s going to happen, I hope I don’t confuse anyone.
Week 14: submit race times to me just like the thread indicates.
Week 15: submit VOTING to me >> submit RACE TIMES to Dave
Week 16: submit VOTING to me >> submit RACE TIMES to Dave
Week 17: Dave’s back at helm…there’s no voting as this is Yellowbird week but Dave will be doing the initial thread…I believe he’s got some specific artwork planned. I can’t wait to see it.

Once again there are 6 choices. 3 slots on the voting ballot. Your top 3 choices, in order of preference, just like always.

All the choices get just an oil change. This week we’ll be racing on R5 tires.

On to the choices:

Toyota 7
Availability: Mission Set 4

Bentley Speed 8
Availability: Endurance Hall, 24Hr Sarthe II

BMW V12 LMR

Mazda 787B

Toyota GT-One

Peugeot 905

No discussion of car selections. Voting deadline is Tuesday, February 7, 2006, 9pm GMT (=4pm US EST). Vote via PM to me.

Voting Results:

6. 3pts - BMW V12
5. 5pts - Peugeot 905
3. 6pts - Mazda 787B & Toyota GT-One (tie)
2. 7pts - Bentley Speed 8
1. 9pts - Toyota 7 Availability: Mission Set 4

Mods:
Oil Change >> 840HP
R5 tires

Only 6 voters but two of our regulars abstained from voting.

Race deadline Monday, February 20, 2006 9pm GMT (US EST 4pm). OLR rules apply.

**SUBMIT RACE TIMES TO Dave_George VIA PM**

tough choice this week.

glad to hear dave is back on the board... and thanks again for being interrim CEO ron.
sorry about "lord of the ring" though, i'm quite sure radical has the copyright on that name now. :P

LotR, lol
...that would be a good name for this series.

I'm not voting this week because I just have no idea what to pick. I've never driven any of those cars but I look forward to having a good reason to win/buy one of them.

Don't forget to vote. Deadline is tomorrow.

I just noticed there are 2 Exxon sponsored cars in the field.

Disclaimer: The cars selected for voting purposes in this event are in no way an endorsement of the sponsors of those said cars by the organizer(s) of this event.

First their drunk tanker pilot spills oil all over Alaska (I still haven't forgotten that) and now they rape the rest of us at the gas station and post record earnings...what gives?

Ever since the oil spill I have boycotted Exxon...you can tell just how effective that's been.

This is a very hard choice to make. Mainly because i am bad at driving them all:lol:

I won't be voting as I only got two of the six cars in my garage. I don't have the money, nore the time to raise it, to buy the others and then compare them... So I'll just await the results :)

I would encourage you to vote anyway. I have not ever given any of the cars a true work out to determine which ones to vote for. I don't get a feel for a car's true capabilities until I've spent at least 3 or 4 laps at the 'Ring and I don't have time to do that for all the choices. A few of the cars I have previously driven and enjoyed but I believe that so far in the series we've not driven a single car that I picked as my top choice.

If there is a car(s) you do want to drive you should vote for them if there a car you don't want to drive you should vote against it (by voting for the other choices).

Anyway voting is up in about 8 hours.

OK, you've twisted my arm!! Voted :P

yeah, i generally do my voting by picking cars i think would be interesting. Which is usually something i've never driven before.
like last week i voted the mclaren vette and pagani... i don't think any of those cars have more than 10 miles on the clock in my garage.
more fun that way.

looks like anyone that hasn't done Mission 34 better get to work.
Mission Set 4 = Mission 25-29: TOYOTA 7 Race Car '70

But of course it's still going to require some additional work if you haven't already acquired the car.

Week 16 the R89C will be on the voting list, it's availability is Mission Set 5, which culminates in Mission 34 (Mission 30-34: NISSAN R89C Race Car '89). I completed Mission 34 the week we had the Amuse (I think) so if I'm capable of winning it so is everybody else, as I'm WRS D3, which = mediocre. But honestly with the other choices available that week I will be surprised if the R89C is the people's choice.

Check out what Woodstock is driving! My wife has one of these in her Snoopy collection. Finally my world of GT collides with her world of Snoopy. I wonder if Woodstock will be submitting a time this week?

Toyota 7= uncontrolable
Try some TCS/ASM. I'm using TCS=2 and ASMs=4.

Session 2, T10 = 4'57.237 (-1.613), 129 Miles. Knocked off anther 0.2 on the final sectors:tup: .

Sure is quiet around here. I would really like to see some other times so I'll know how I'm stacking up. Although I guess it's very early in the week and maybe everybody's still workin' on the McLaren. Next session I'll write down my settings and post them...I started off using my McLaren settings and then softened a bit more. The car is still a bit jumpy in places so maybe I need to soften it a bit more?

your allowed to use TCS i didnt knew that
i will start right away
EDIT

thnx goixoye

The car is still a bit jumpy in places so maybe I need to soften it a bit more?

thing i noticed while playing with the mclaren settings.
if you find the car "twichey" under braking, or going over bumps/hills
raise the ride height.
I'm assuming that jumpy/uncontrollable/erraticness is GT's approximation of the body hitting the tires.

without driving the car, i'll probably start my tinkering somewhere around:
ride: 85-90
springs: 7.0-12 (anything over 12 and the shocks need to get too tight for sanity)
bound: 2-4
rebound: 6-8
^^ shocks depend entirely on the springs they are dampening.
stablizer: for the ring i tend to like 4/2 or 4/1 depending on how nervous the car is... always softer in the rear though. while controling body-roll a side-effect of what the stablizer bar does is essentially tie the right and left suspension elements together, so if they're really tight the right side feels the impact of what the left side ran over. Its pretty easy to deduce how that can make a car really jumpy at 150+ over uneven pavement... so as a rule on the ring i do the rear softer since the effect is worse on the drive wheels.

hope that helps you tune a bit faster.

Off the top of my head I'm not sure exactly what my settings are but I did start with my McLaren settings and then softened a bit more so after looking at those settings in last week's thread I'm in the ballpark of your reccommendations. I'm almost sure I'm running the same settings front and back (except bound & rebound I do have them staggered) so maybe I'll try softening the rear a smidge and leave the front as is and see how that feels.

I feel like I'm real close to my limit but would like to see some other times to see how I'm stacking up. Of course last week I felt that way and then found about 4 seconds. I wonder if adding ballast would help? I know when I gave the Caterham a spin at the 'Ring (several months ago) I had to add ballast to get anything clean and decent.

This morning's session was about 35 minutes and only one clean lap. But so far I've put in about 25-30% of my usual finishing mileage. I need to remember to change the oil before my next session.

OK I'm newly motivated. I looks like I have an outside chance at an overall "bronze" finish in the series. If ONLYME fails to race in one more event I will definitely overtake him. But I'd rather not climb to that position based on his absence. Currently with a 6 point difference and 3 weeks of competition remaining I **COULD** finish ahead but it's not likely as I'd need to finish ahead each week with at least one other competitor in between us. This of course is not likely as ONLYME and I seem to be very equal in ability (sometimes he finishes ahead, sometimes I finish ahead). But there's enough of a chance at the "bronze" that I'm a little extra motivated.

ONLYME if you're still participating and "listening" I'm after you :mischievous: and I want that last podium position.

Of course I've got to be wary of VEXD dumping me to 5th. Which is really more likely than me overtaking ONLYME.

Had my first few laps in the 7 today....

Found that this car does just about everything you dont want it to do at high speed, it bucks and weaves and pulls on cambers, touch the grass and its see ya later as you inspect the armco a bit more....

Will take some tuning to get a controllable and supple ride out of this i think, my inital T10 is 5'09 and thats with 1 click of TCS, looks like you may have me again this week Ronny!

This must have been unreal for the guys who actually had to drive the real thing, the way the power comes on at 7000rpm is savage, it can bog down a bit low down so you have to keep the turbo spooling all the time dancing that knife edge of wheelspin to end all wheelspins! TCS has helped get moving but i just dont like the aids and how they affect the car, however with this cars characteristics on the Ring I might try to embrace them this week!

The sensation of speed is just amazing though with the 7, it just wants to fire you down any bit of straight tarmac that you see, hopefully i can put together a competitive setup/laptime.

cheers

I was thinking about that too. Only from the perspective of how uncomfortable it would be to drive maybe any race car but especially one made in 1970. Not to mention one on a bumpy road (vs a "smooth" track). I expect the car would about beat you to death or maybe jar your retinas or kidneys loose. I doubt the seat has any padding (probably a steel bucket) and no damping whatsoever. Heck it's a little unnerving in the game when the DFP starts rattling. Not to mention if I survived all that I had to clean out my drawers after driving 200+mph down the straight following Flugplatz. Jeez this 'thang is quick.

But what an adenaline rush!

Managed to get my T10 down to 5'07 but to be honest im at a complete loss as to how im 9 seconds behind Ronny already....

Tried the ASM but found the car undriveable (Prob cause i never use it), got it feeling nice and supple and able to take Schwedenkreuz at 209mph without lifting so i dont have any stability issues!

So i dont know what to try next really...realisticly with an ultra clean lap i think i can shave a couple of seconds but thats all...maybe i just cant cut it with these Race cars and race tyres....:indiff:

Dave,
Doesn't make sense to me either. I must be doing something wrong or something very right? After seeing your post I double checked the car. 840HP (garage), R5s...788HP RSS/RSS (replay screen). So that looks OK.

Here's my setup:
5.0/5.0 (tried 5.0/4.0)
95/95
2/3
3/4
3.0/1.5
0/-2
3/3 (tried 3/2)

Brakes: 5/3
TCS: 2
ASMs: 4/4
Tranny: Auto 16

T01=34.800
T02=1'01.141
T03=1'24.251
T04=2'03.778
T05=2'33.044
T06=2'53.473
T07=3'32.264
T08=4'05.169
T09=4'21.590
T10=4'55.238 (-1.999) 👍
Final -2.251 👍 👍

This lap is "messy" but still clean (just not "spotless"). I'm ususally "cleaner". I had to check the replay, which I usually only do to get the split times. It's rare that I get two tires off track (especially with a car like this) but I managed to do it 2 or 3 times this lap and still managed to hold on somehow. Apparently another magical lap.

I **THINK** there might be another 0.5s for me. But that would take a perfect lap.

313.4 miles. So I think I'll give this a rest for a few days (maybe give the Jag a go) and give it one more session. Although this morning I felt like I was in a "zone" so maybe I should press on and finish up before confusing myself with the handling traits of a different car?

I tried the softer rear setting for about 12 miles but didn't like them. Never got past Flugplatz. The time reduction this session is due at least in part to the tranny...I was using Auto 17, now 16. I think I saw 211mph on Schwedenkreuz and 212 or 213 on the final straight.

Maybe my splits will help? Maybe you just didn't use R5s or change the oil?

Ronny

Hi Ronny, Im sure i changed the oil and am running correct tyres. I will set up with your settings tonight under my "B" setting screen and have a go with them...although they look remarkably similar to mine.

The one thing that strikes me as interesting is that you found a lot of speed by switching the ASM/TCS on last week and this one also, I wonder if thats something to do with it, even a moments hesitation in a car this powerfull can mean a quarter of a second down the pan.....

I am running with 1 click of TCS but ASM i just couldnt re-adjust to....

I think you have found some serious speed from somewhere though...so well done!!

regards

David

I don't know that I found speed by using TCS/ASM (although if the wheels are spinning they're not moving you forward as well as they should). I turned them "on" after not being able to turn a clean lap with them "off". But then again if you're babying the car around the track with no aids that's gotta be slower than turning on the aids and letting the car apply just the amount of babying needed? Manually I'm probably not able to modulate the brake and gas to the sweet spot. So I guess I'm letting the car find the sweet spot for me? Usually I go much faster without the aids but maybe that applies to lower powered cars. I don't think I have the skills to drive these cars on this track at these speeds without a little help.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm using AT again this week. I used MT in the Falken (switched to AT just to see if it improved my time any but after so many miles of MT the AT just felt awkward). Started with the Mc in AT and stuck with it...never tried MT. Started the 7 with AT and will probably not bother with MT at this point. So maybe the AT is my secret weapon?

Right i gave things a shot with your setup Ronny, AT and TCS/ASM as you had them set...

Resulted in (after many restarts) a T10 of 5'00.xxx

I then changed back to my own settings and switched on the ASM and got down to 4'57.xxx which was clean at least. Took some getting used to using the aids again but quite frankly im amazed that i could find 10 seconds in a lap just by using ASM.....

To be honest I dont like using the aids if i can help it but it seems I may have to just to stay competitive this week.

David
