Nurburgring Race Series Week 5 (Nissan Skyline R34 GTR M Spec NUR)

Steve57
I have purchased a 1997 GT-R V-Spec R33, and after doing the
power mods find I'm coming up with a figure of 372BHP, some 20BHP down on the
stated figures.

Steve

Same here, Steve. Bought myself the right car, did the right tuning and came to 372 bhp. I guess we'll all have to just calmly wait a bit, till Dave shows up and clears this thing out. Maybe, it's just a typo in Dave's post, and 372 bhp is the right figure. That would mean that everything is correct... We'll have to wait and see...

Right.

Firstly apologies to everyone.

It seems i overlooked the used car mileage on the R33 Skyline, my car had 0 miles, i tested another at 6.6 miles and got 387HP and another with 30k and got 370 ish so this car for consistency cannot be used now.

Regarding the suggestions so far thanks guys, the R34 was due to make an appearance later on in the series which im sure you would have appreciated.....using the Ruf would mean we spend another week with an MR car so the obvious choice is to substitute the R33 with an R34 which is what i have done :

New car = Nissan Skyline R34 M spec NUR (New from Nissan)

skyliner345ml.jpg

Tune as follows :

Oil change
Chip
POrt polish
Engine balance
sports exhaust

sports suspension
S1 tyres
semi race flywheel
carbon driveshaft
stage 3 weight reduction
twin plate clutch
chassis refresh is optional

Power = 416HP
Weight = 1311KGS

The power may seem high but its due to the Skylines weight, to take a logical step up from the NSX-R's power to weight ratio we must give this car more power, not a problem as this will level out in future weeks 👍

Apologies again to everyone, I hate to think this might seem unprofessional but please believe me it was an oversight on my part and that i think we still have a good machine to run with this week. Any more probs let me know. As you have lost a day then the submission will move back also 1 day to next monday 21st 9pm GMT, this might become a regular time but i will let you all know of that during the week if its going to happen.

Lets try again then everyone :)

cheers

Dave

Don't sweat it Dave, this thing rocks and i'd be glad to finish last in that R33 too ;)

But thanks for the clarification, i'll go spend another 100k on that new R34 beauty... one day.. i'll have one... one day... ahhhh

Well, thanks for clearing that up dave. 👍

I still think we should be on the normal R34 '00!

With stage 3 weight reduction it weighs in at 1279 KG. 👍

Oh well, the Nur will do just fine I suppose. :indiff:
Of course, I'm just whining.

Truth is, I probably will not run this race because a time trial/ practice run on S1 tires with anything over 350hp is getting to be rediculus (in my opinion).

For that matter, anything with this much weight and more than 400hp on S1 tires is crazy (once again, in my opinion). :sly:

All good though.
Hope you all enjoy the race.
I will be around and I may even take a shot at the race (although I can't promise).

In any case, catch you all in the week 4 results thread when I finally get the chance to post my final time. :mischievous:

Btw, did any of the really fast racers compete in week 4? (not that you all aren't fast- cause you are all fast even if it doesn't look that way on the results... trust me, placing dead last in an event like this still leaves you room to be fast compared to many others).

Thanks Dave 👍 I think I actually own this one already, so I look forward to taking her for a spin tonight :)

Kent
I disagree. :P

The '00 Skyline GT-R.

That's the best skyline. :D

It weighs only 1540kg (which is the lightest of any R34).
The weight can also be tuned down to the lowest levels of any normal R34 as well. 👍

No v-spec or Nur... Just the plain Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 '00.

Availible as a new car at the dealer and I've got a hunch it's the cheapest of the skylines from the dealer as well. :sly:

Anyway, it doesn't matter... Sorry to get involved. :guilty:

Btw, when do the results for week 4 go up?
I can't wait to post my time and hopefully my replay shortly there after.
Should be interesting to see what watson did as well as fryz... I'm wondering to myself if I had a good final section or not. :dopey:

Post Script:
I suggest a new vote is done and the candidates are limited to 2 models, both new cars availible from the dealer. :D
3400S or R34 '00 :sly:

Hate to argue kent but WRS week 5 proved that even because the M-spec was the heaviest, it was the best. The Week was any skyline fully tuned as long as the power was under 500hp. I tried many different ones, but the heaviest and newest M-spec was the best.

Try yourself, get a 500hp Skyline that you like, and a 500hp M-spec. The mspec will be faster even though its about 100kg heavier.

I took her out of the garage last night and gazed longingly at her shiny purple coat, stroking her gently as I reminisced on the fun we had at Motegi.

*Not entirely sure if it's proper to be stroking a female car, but *cough* well ... yeah ... my MNP sure as hell ain't male.

I will surely take a part in this week no mather what ;)

PS. Take a look at my avatar and gallery ;)

I really am interested in this... Partly because I love doing comparisons, partly because I love an under-dog.

However, I wouldn't be so quick to say the WRS proved which skyline was the fastest; deciding which driver was fastest is more likely. ;)
I barely saw any diversity in those results.
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=64326

Should I decide to do some comparisons with tuned GT mode skylines, it will certainly be a 'Ring only deal.
After just a few laps at motegi I was very unhappy with what a slouch I've become on other tracks. :guilty:
For a while Motegi was one of my better tracks... Now I can't even keep up with D3 from those results. :dopey:

Considering that this is all way off subject, I'm gonna just drop it. :ouch:
However, I will do some testing and if time permits, a write-up may be posted... In the right forum of course. ;)

Later. :D
And good luck this week.

Took this beauty for a spin...and i must say... it is an amazing experience. I'm not done with the settings yet, but so far, its a joy to drive. Even with S1 tires, the car is amazingly steady in high speed corners. Perharps i got better, but i somehow doubt that ;)

Just for the heck of it, here's my preliminary times...

T1: '46.854
T4: 2'48.117
T7: 4'50.371
T10: 6'46.336

I'm sure i can come up with something better then that... i'll give it more time tomorow.

loving this ride.

Ah, but all the fast drivers did race different skylines, and all found the M-Spec to be the fastest. Thats why you see so many ;), you should know, variety means the cars were similar, when 1 make dominates it means its superior. Not many racers race a car that is at a disadvantage.

Anyway enough of this for me also before I get banned for going off topic

I would be interested in your results 👍

And if im proven wrong i will appologise

Hello all...

Hopefully the GTR is going down well so far, Small_Fryz i took your advice but to be honest i also think the M spec Nur is about the best, As Kent says the standard GTR is 33KGS lighter but i thought the M spec Nur was quite..."Fitting" for this comp 👍

I had one lap last night just to gauge the car and found understeer the order of the day, a quick lower and soften the front with some camber brought about a much more neutral lap which was a couple of seconds slower at T10 than my NSX-R lap. So my goal for this week is to match the time i set by the extremely quick Nsx which showed how mighty it was despite a lower Power to weight ratio than this weeks car.

The Skyline is a bit refreshing after some of the twitchy cars we have experienced, its very stable and has great brakes and ultimately feels a bit easier to get a clean lap.....should be a lot of fun.

cheers all

Dave

its so strange... I feel a lot more confortable with the GTR compared to the NSX. After a few laps, i'M already beating my NSX times, mostly because i am way more stable with this beast. I'm having a blast with this thing! I'll give it more go tonight and see if i can push this a little. I'm also starting to be more confortable on the 'Ring.

I think ultimatly the NSX-R might be the quicker car, i could be wrong but im sure there wont be much in it...the Skyline is definately more user friendly, remember MR cars have a reputation for being the best handling but also they can be extremely tricky to drive fast as we found out with the NSX and to a lesser degree the MR2 in week 2.

Glad your enjoying it RedOak 👍

Dave

*EDIT* Ok ignore what i wrote above, maybe last night i was driving like a muppet because i just lost 5 seconds off my time in just 2 laps with a
T10 6'32.624
So many errors and places i was too cautious but the Skyline does feel very planted which makes you want to push and push, great car this......Should be a week where everyone gets their best result perhaps 👍

cheers

Dave

yeah, skyline is definately faster than the NSX.
did some playing around to get my settings arranged.
which are:
minimum ride height
9/9 shocks
and super extreme camber of 3.0 / 1.8
the psychotic camber is my perscription for oversteer... if you're not careful in some of the slower corners you can put the car sideways.
after cobbling together a setup, i had time to run 4 flying laps, best of which was:
45.563
1'20.980
1'50.534 (saw a 1'49 on a previous dirty lap =])
2'42.663
3'22.155
3'49.882
4'41.065
5'23.880
5'46.234
6'29.774

first impression:
once removing the initial understeer the car is quite good... you're right about the VCD being unnecessary... i'm not a big skyline guy, so i was unaware its default 4wd system was this much better than the lancer.
VS. the nsx, its not as fast through the high speed corners, and can't change direction as easily... but makes up for its lack of agility with a truckload of grip and phenominal brakes. I was finding myself getting closer to racecar brake points than those of the nsx.
The car also has what i was sorely missing from the nsx, big enough low end balls to pull out a stump! (i'll take this time to thank you for keeping us on the stock turbo, lag is totally not an issue... would have been nice to get the displacement increase though... then the torque would have been starting to approch obsene)
i love the engine note as well.
Great car 👍

anyway... off to a final exam i go.

Just checkin' here waiting for the day where I'll have to do this series, one day. Because I NEED the practice here. And Kolyana, u are on some kind of roll, damn ur funny!

MNPIII Midnight Purple alllllll the way, yo!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this week's car comes in that color. The one in Midnight Purple is not the M-spec NUR - version we're using this week, am I right

Shame though, because purple actually is my favorite color :P

Good question Bart im not sure on this one myself but i dont remember seeing MNP as a colour choice when i purchased mine?? Is it correct Nat?

cheers

OK this is what i have after 2h of driving - default settings (only TCS and ASM both to 0 ):
T1: 46.390
T2: 1.22.341
T3: 1.51.816
T4: 2.46.039
T5: 3.25.830
T6: 3.53.375
T7: 4.45.548
T8: 5.30.098
T9: 5.53.056
T10: 6.39.964

I wrote down all T times to see where do i lost the most of time. If you guys would write down all of yours that would be nice ;)
I have made alot of errors worth about 5s and i do not think that i will make any better on those settings. I will try settings of some of you tomorrow ;)

Well it seems like I'm alone this week in that I am the only one here feeling like the NSX was faster!

That's right, as of now, the NSX is faster than the GT-R (for me).

I thought it would be an arse whipping but to my suprise it was a test of patience before I could even match most of my NSX times with the GT-R.

The final lap time was slower by a nice little margin and the t times were all over the place.

However, since my first day of work yielded times close to the NSX's, I am forced to acknowledge that later this week the skyline may be on top.
I'm almost sure of it. :D

Of course, that still speaks volumes for the NSX since it was rated at about 3.4 pwr and the GT-R is running closer to 3.1 pwr.

An interesting selection though. 👍
The GT-R is one hell of an oversteering beast and controlling that power will be the most challenging part of the week for me.

Settings at the moment...
113/113
8/8
2.0/1.0
:P

Back later after I beat my NSX ghost. :mischievous:
I just hope I can do it!

Btw, nice work on the early T times watson.

well.. i hope you beat your ghost... considering I already did. :P

My MNP reference only a few old time WRS fans will 'get'. The last time we had a Skyline over there we essentially got a choice of *any* skyline at Motegi West, and while popular consensus went with pretty much 1 or 2 cars, I chose the MNP Edition because it's so damn pretty. I hauled that fat a$$ into 2nd place (D3), refusing to go with the quicker car, because it was uglier :P

villanpl, you asked for full splits, so here are mine. I'm actually using YOURS as a target for me this week, something that I can chase without the impossible feeling that everyone else gives me!

T1: 46.9xx
T2: 1'23.952 (I can't believe I'm a full second down already ... I really need to work on this area)
t3: 1'53.8xx
t4: 2'47.685
t5: 3'27.xxx
t6: 3'55.xxx (I'm pretty much keeping the distance between us fairly consistent through to here)
t7: 4'449.1xx (but I lose ground here ... a bad sector for me it seems)
t8: 5'33.5xx (but I gain ground back?)
t9: 5'57.1xx (and lose it again :P)
t10: 6'42.359

I'd like to break the '40 mark this week ... just have a sense of improvement *somewhere* along the line.

Hi Folks, here are my full split times as well, seems pretty close competition at the moment. ( well for some of us at least ) :sly:.

T1 - 47.110
T2 - 1.23.97
T3 - 1.53.42
T4 - 2.46.93
T5 - 3.26.83
T6 - 3.54.82
T7 - 4.47.76
T8 - 5.32.42
T9 - 5.55.90
T10 - 6.40.72

Settings
- 115 / 115 ----- 3 / 3 ----- 1.7 / 1.3

I have tried running those very stiff settings used by those that lap me every week,:ill:
but find I'm bouncing all over the shop and then off the black stuff and into the
woods, must be my driving style ( useing the word "style" in a very loose refrence  )
Seems softer works best for me, as most weeks my settings are near the same
numbers :boggled:.

Loving driving the Skyline here, it just gives me more confidence to push a bit harder
than I have been, for its size it is very forgiving. Yeee 4WD :sly: ( can we vote for this again next week :D )

Now, back to the Ring 👍 Good Luck Everyone

Steve

again, i find myself in the same trap as last week. I got my ghost and i can't beat it. I pass it here and there, and it catchs back to me at other places... this is very frustrating.

My friend says i drive too much like 'i would in real life' and don't take enought risks... hmmmfff
