That's what we were talking about most in class today. I think the general consensus in my class was on the side of befuddled negativity, regardless of their politics. That was echoed on NPR all afternoon as well. Its cool that he won and all, but it just doesn't feel like a legitimate prize.
A friend of mine had a Facebook post that said "When I woke up this morning my wife told me that Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize and I said, "What for?" And I am an Obama guy, so that is saying something."

Is it just me or did we elect a motivational speaker for president? It seems like every time he talks he has the same tone as those guys that would come to my highschool.
He lives in a van, DOWN BY THE RIVER! ?

Dang, Omnis beat me to it.

Anybody think that this whole Nobel Prize thing is incredibly Orwellian? The icing on the cake is that he gets the peace prize on the day he bombed the moon.

I heard about that peace prize. Why the hell Obama??? He didn't even do anything!!!

Basically give speeches about how "wrong" and "bad" America has been through out history and you get a nobel prize....how nice. Affirmative Action Nobel Prize. All it does is discredit the award, everybody can see why he has it and the hypocrisy behind it. Surely the articles of every conservative journalist around the world are writing themselves right now, for once writing something that may cause their readership to think?

Why so serious?

He has just been messing up this country! :grumpy:

Make up your mind, man! :P If he hasn't been in charge for long enough to deserve an award, he hasn't been in charge long enough to deserve the blame for all America's problems either...

I'm disappointed that he didn't reject the award, but even that would be a serious faux pas/mistake that his political enemies would use against him. The blame lies entirely with the Nobel committee on this one - how they could give Obama the award and not someone like Morgan Tsvangirai is simply beyond my comprehension.

Actually there are reports that he is upset with NASA over that.

Man, looks like they'll give any one that award now-a-days.

What really concerns me is that I've heard he was nominated for the award 2 days before his inauguration, so what the hell did he do before hand to be even nominated?

Someone explained this to me yesterday about why he was nominated and won. Apparently he brought together to "polar" opposite parties in the United States. I don't know how much I agree with that, since most people I knew who voted for Obama did so because they were willing to give someone other than a Republican a chance after the mess Bush made. I'm going to have to imagine the next president will be a Republican due to people wanting to give someone who is not a Democrat a chance after the mess Obama made.

NASA is one reason I'll agree to pay some sort of tax. NASA is pretty awesome.

I think a private space programme would do soooo much better. Look at how long it takes NASA to do a space flight and how costly it is. The private sector has figured it out pretty quickly and all things considered cheaply too.

I totally support private space stuff. But as they get farther, NASA gets farther. NASA is definitely not one of those government agencies that needs to be gotten rid of, because what they do actually works. Expensive as all get out, yes, but it works. Unlike the welfare office down the street. I mean, this moon mission could have been more expensive. They could have sent people there. But instead they just threw stuff at it.

SO yeah, private guys can use space to make as much money as they want, but I've got a feeling it's going to be up to NASA to figure out how to grow a tree on Mars.

In all honesty, the Democrats could only have lost that election if they had run Hillary Clinton or Jesse Jackson. There was no chance a Republican was going to win, ever.

According to someone I know, easing diplomatic tensions with two countries we would never go to war with in the first place and making vague-enough-to-mean-anything promises regarding Iraq is perfectly acceptable reasoning for someone to get a Nobel Peace Price.

Is it bad that I still think this is some Onion bit?

RE: Why Obama "Won" the Award?

What I had come to understand was that the award was given based on the foreign policy changes from the Bush Administration, and the prospect of a change in the views of America by the outside world. Okay, the first point I could maybe see, but the second one not so much. As I said earlier, if it was a year or so from now, maybe the award would mean a lot more. But right now, I'm not particularly thrilled by it. Especially when it becomes more of a liability than something that is as meaningful as it should be.

I'm going to have to imagine the next president will be a Republican due to people wanting to give someone who is not a Democrat a chance after the mess Obama made.

Political Science kids love to watch that, but the odds remain significantly against any of the "major" Republican candidates at this point. If anyone in the GOP think that people like Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal or Mike Huckabee have a chance, I want what they've been smoking. I could certainly see a more Conservative Democrat being elected, but the real challenge is going to come from the Libertarian wing of either party. That's my guess. Which still has me crossing my fingers that they get something together now, overthrowing the current leadership of the GOP, or starting a new party outright.

*sigh*

Unicorns and rainbows, I know. It would be nice to have a Republican party that wasn't full of crazy people.

You mean, like a Libertarian Party?

I just thought of something. Has Obama accepted the Nobel prize and done a speech to the committee and all that yet? Because it would be tremendously funny if someone ran up and said, "Barack Obama, I'm real happy for you and Imma let you finish, but... HU JIA IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTIVISTS OF ALL TIME! Of all time!"

Do we know each other (IRL)? I just had this revelation with some friends a few hours ago.

No your post, it doesn't make any sense. It's like you took political position, wrote it down, and then put it through a wood chipper.

Um... what? This is a joke right?

The rest of my post is presuming your post is not a joke.

Forgive the assumption, but you just don't strike me as someone who is well versed in economic theory. So I wonder how you consider yourself qualified to claim that Obama fixed the economy. Furthermore, I wonder just how you think he "fixed" the economy. I also wonder what you consider "fixed". You are aware that unemployment is currently higher than when Obama took office right?

Here's another question for you. How earth does the unemployment rate increasing under Obama's presidency qualify him for a peace prize?
