I know the series ended last night!! But might as well post this as signings have already started! I don't expect this thread to go anywhere until some of the big names have come out...
2010 Free Agents
Matt Holliday and Jason Bay will likely be the two biggest signings this off season.. And stupid Boras is already asking for Mark Teixeira type numbers for Holliday. Bay will likely not cost as much but give as much reward.
For deals that have already happened... Giants have re-signed Freddy Sanchez to a 2 year $12mm year deal canceling out his $8mm one year option. Also Giants did not re-sign hitting coach Carney Lansford and signed Hensley "Bam Bam" Meulens who was the hitting coach for the Giants AAA Grizzlies and many of our rising stars have had a lot of success with his coaching so this could be a good move.
Angels re-signed Bobby Abreu today for 9mm in '10 9mm '11 and a 1mm buyout giving him a guaranteed 19 mm. Expected move for them as he is a huge part of their lineup.
The Rays traded 2nd basemen Akinori Iwamura to the Pirates for rookie reliever Jesse Chavez. Not sure what to think of this move, as I don't know anything about Chavez but the Pirates get a solid second basemen in Iwamura who looks to of replace Freddy Sanchez who played a pivotal roll for the Pirates. Which could be a start for the Pirates if they ever want to turn around.
John's Astros re-signed Geoff Blum to a one year deal worth 1.5mm in '10 with a $1.65mm option for '11. I'm guessing he will play a utility roll. Would like to get your opinion on this John as you are the Astro fan in the house.
Tim Hudson signed a 3 year extension with the Braves worth $27mm ($9mm per year.) Good move for the Braves to keep that solid pitching staff together, and can't say that I'm surprised as they definatly have a chance to make some noise in 2010 in the NL East which could be up for grabs next year with the Phillies and Mets and pieces for both teams having huge question marks. But Hudson did just come of Tommy John so I wish him best of luck with his future against all teams not named Giants!
Another move for John's Astros! They hired Brad Mills (Red Sox bench coach) as manager replacing Dave Clark who replaced Cecil Cooper. Hope your team can fix those manager woes.
Braves also signed reliever Scott Proctor who won't be able to pitch until June or July. No details have been mentioned as of yet to my knowledge.
White Sox re-signed Mark Kotsay who played 1b and all three outfield positions to a $1.5mm deal. He put up some pretty solid numbers in 127 AB's so if he could do that next year that could help the Sox mighty in a division that is pretty much up for grabs.
Tony Larussa re-signed with the Cardinals for one year with a mutual option for 2011. He also reported that slugger Mark McGwire would be the hitting coach for the Cardinals. I'm really confused why he would do that as Matt Holliday went to him and struggled with his advice and went back to his ways to do good again. McGwire was never a all around hitter he was a slugger so I'm not entirely sure how he could help. Who knows how that will turn out but it will sure be mighty interesting!
Royals trade outfielder Mark Teahen to the White Sox for 2B Chris Getz and Josh Fields who played left field, 3B and 1B. It's another good move for the Sox to replace aging Jermaine Dye in the outfield to help them for the 2011 run.
The Rays re-signed outfielder Gabe Kapler to a one year $1.05mm deal. Great defender that can play all three out field positions but seemingly needs to learn how to hit.
That's all for now. Just wanted to kill some time this afternoon so I decided to start up the off season trade talk that led to some interesting conversations last year.
Feel free to add anything braking news or moves that I didn't put it in which is mostly just teams releasing players or players electing free agency.
One last thing I want to say is that the Giants re-signed General Manager Brian Sabean and Manager Bruce Bochy to two year deals.. I can't believe they did this as they are one of the biggest problems that the Giants have. This happened a little while ago but still its a dumb ass move that I can't believe our brain dead field office made.
