Today the FIA announced it has changed the Formula One qualifying. At the next race on May 29th at the Nurburgring there will be only one qualifying session. All teams agreed in Monaco to the changed format.

The new qualifying procedure means that qualifying will happen in one session on Saturday. The driver will set one timed lap with race fuel under parc ferme conditions (just like in 2004). The running order in qualifying is the reversed order of the previous race result. In other words, the winner of the last race is the last to go out in qualifying on Saturday.
Many people have wanted this for a while, I don't really mind either way.

As for me I've always prefered the 12 free laps qualifying session. I remember having seeing a battle in 2002 in the French GP between Michael and Juan Pablo, it was splendid.
The only problem was that everybody was wainting the last 20 minutes to make a time.
So I would make just a slight change and it would be like this :
- 12 laps for each driver
- each driver have to do 4 laps (2 launched laps) per 15 min. if not, the best time is cancelled.

I don't really like the one lap qualifying session. Especially, when you're on the track, you don't see the cars that much. And it's quite unfair when the wether is unstable, it becomes a lotery.

I would also like to see again the car during the warm up, when you get up early to be at 6am on the track, it's hard to wait around 8 hours or more without seeing quite anything.

looks like that survey is worth somethign after all.

I don't like it. I like the the one practice and two qualifying days. This sucks. I wanted to see an aggregate of the the two qualifying days, and have 5 points awarded, 5 constructor and 5 driver, to the teams who score the top 5 positions. 5 and 5 for 5. Makes sense to me.

I read this a few days ago already, but it never explained why they changed. Was there a valid reason to? Did teams complain, or drivers? I don't get it.

i wanted the whole points thing too, but it says the teams all agreed to it.

I would love aggregate if they had the first qualifying session on Friday, and the 2nd on Saturday.
