I actually am excited about the PS2 under $100 news. Not for myself, I have a backward compatible PS3, but for youth centers, charities, libraries, and churches who all attempt to bring in youth in a safe and healthy environment. I keep hearing people I know who are involved with these things talking about how they have a Gamecube they picked up for $50.
These types of places can likely afford to purchase a PS2 and put in some of the popular family-oriented party games, like Madden, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and Buzz. The difference between this and getting an older system like a Gamecube is that the PS2 is still supported, getting add-ons for the above listed games, and is still under warranty.
For all of us here, this means very little. But unless your PS2 is dead and you have a newer PS3 you don't really have a reason to care, do you? Most of us found our way here because of Gran Turismo, and unless you are very, very old school, likely already have/had a PS2.
Think of this more in line for non-profit youth organizations and even more less fortunate families. Heck, with this price cut I am contemplating buying one for the youth group at my wife's church and giving them my old Madden games and possibly adding on the Rock Band special edition pack. Then the youth minister won't have to keep harassing me to do stuff to help with the youth group because I will want to help them.

Hm PS2 cut price... US, Japan, England, They are not the only countries to buy Video games. Other places in Europe still buy PS2 games, They are cheaper, tons of almost free games now, and there is something for everyone.

Can someone actually link me to where Sony said they had a big announcement? All I seem to be able to find is them saying "global" announcement, which this is.

Yeah Sony never mention BIG announcement. All they talk said is that they will announce something from them. Gaming sites and news they all say SONY will have big announcement, if you were anticipated blame media not Sony. Heck even IGN mentioned that they did not wanted to spread too much anticipation for the fans.

Currently about a million PS2's have sold this year. Last year (2008) about 8 million PS2s were sold, and the year before that about 10 million were sold compared to about 8 million 360 and PS3 consoles... so despite being nearly ten years old at the time, it was the second best selling console behind the Wii in 2007.
Of course in regards to total sales, it's around 125 million.

Ps2 + GT4 Special Edition, hopefully with online play! This extends the development period for GT5 and gives lots of players "some" satisfaction. Most people would be happy to race online with GT4 content, I think.
And people with a smaller budget can enjoy GT4 SE online

Oh ffs mate shut up! Enough with this one-man defence of Castle Sony! People are rightly disappointed and annoyed with how long it is taking PD to release what is, lets not forget, A VIDEOGAME! The loyal fans have heard NOTHING about this damn game, and besides an overpriced, half-assed demo, we have NOTHING to go on. If people wish to express their dismay and frustration well good, maybe if enough people do that then PD (or Sony for that matter) might sit up and take notice. Many hundreds of people around the world I'm sure feel exactly the same way. The fanbase has been incredibly patient, but that only goes so far.
