I hope these people affected in Oklahoma will be ok. Terrible to hear about the death toll. Hopefully there will not be any more.

I just read that a meteorologist from down there said that this tornado is the worst/most destructive tornado in the history of the world and put the 1999 twister to shame. Clocks in 2 miles wide.

Hopefully the family down there is alright.

If that two mile wide bit is true, then... YIKES!! :scared:

Hmm, I've got friends out there :( Haven't heard from them yet... but a friend of a friend on Facebook says they're okay.

They joked with me yesterday that I should be over there with my camera (when I was last there I stayed up most of the night shooting storms!)... I guess things got worse since then :(

Indeed, the 1999 Moore Tornado has the record for highest wind speed for a tornado, and for the earth perhaps, although the measuring altitude was a fair ways above the ground. Were getting lots and lots of rain from this weather system, its really planted over the midwest at the moment.
From the NWS in Norman about the track of today's tornado compared to the one back in May 3rd 1999.

As of 8:19 am today, the death toll has been lowered to 24 by the official medical examiner, So the 51 was news sources on what they knew and would presume to be dead.

Just horrific event. Crazy how close it was to the tornado in 1999. Almost exact same path. Any video of this tornado or did it happen at night? Some of the Joplin tornado videos are just unbelievable and terrifying. Especially the video of the people in the gas station that survived by staying in the food locker. That was probably one of the most scary Tornado videos I have ever seen.

Here is a video when the tornado first touched down to the ground:

Here is a sped up version of the tornado from one of the local TV station helicopters:

I grabbed a few pictures on my way to work, but they all look terrible. Tough to drive down the interstate and get pictures in any kind of focus.

Such a horrible event. Mother nature at her worst. My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected.

I've heard 24 children from that one school, and up to 90 total. Per Reed Timmer's facebook page.

That is old information. 24 confirmed dead, 9 are children, 7 from the school. With all the people missing, it will unfortunately probably rise.

Kevin Durant is pledging $1m us.

Well there goes all of Nike's current ad campaign about KD not being nice.

Yes, well I don't know about the "history of the world" part. Maybe recorded history? But the rest is pretty much what I saw on CNN.

Worse than 1999, up to two miles wide, 45 minutes on the ground and destroyed everything in it's path. Including two schools and countless homes.

@Slashfan I hope your family's ok man.

Thoughts and prayers to all involved.

Thanks man, unfortunately I still have not heard from them.

Heard around 50+ killed now. :(

Yahoo is reporting the destruction is worse than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

Have you seen the pictures?

Death wise, no comparison. As far as buildings leveled, pretty damn close.

Better reread what the comparison is saying (which btw, is all coming from the same Washington source, & nothing else).

They are not comparing the destruction of the tornado to the bomb. They are comparing the energy both possessed, meaning that the force behind the tornado's winds was more than the energy Little Boy had.

Destructive-wise, not even close.

It's a stupid comparison, anyway, honestly. Mother Nature can obviously possess any amount of energy behind a storm, but it's Mother Nature against a man-made bomb. Of the two, one's purpose is to do nothing but obliterate.

Just got word my family in Oklahoma is safe and sound. Thanks for the prayers everyone.

Tornadoes truly are a destructive and powerful force..

Good to see your family is safe, Slashfan, and all the others on here who're from Oklahoma. 👍
Thoughts and prayers to those affected.

St. Louis has been put on tornado watch, as a storm front is rolling that way.

Aww, I hope not, I just left St. Louis on Sunday from visiting family. Hopefully the storms won't be as bad.

Also, any updates on the death toll?
