opinions on .NET in general

Hey everybody,

Im just wondering whats the general opinion about the "new" .NET platform. I've been hearing some mixed thoughts about it and im just curious to what everybody else is thinking.

Is it worth learning the platform if you dont really plan to work for Microsoft ... lol?

I'm wondering what the market is for skilled programers with the knowledge of the platform. For example should I be learning C# or C, or does it make any difference at all?

Thanks for your input!

I dunno... it seems to me that the .NET services aren't taking off to the expectations of Microsoft at all. And really, is there much use for it outside of Hotmail/MSN Messenger integration?

I think you might be better off with the more conventional programming stuff, or heck, why not try out web design? Learn XHTML, CSS, PHP, and how to handle MySQL databases, and you can be all set! :D

.NET is a coding platform thingie, mainly for the web, created and implemented by Microsoft some time ago... I don't know much about it, but I suppose it's analogous to other web programming services such as ASP.

For example, know how you can get instance Hotmail Inbox feedback via Messenger? That's due to .NET programming.

So basically, if you are not planing to work for Microsoft, it's pretty much useless?

I definetly agree with your comment on web design. I have been doing it for a while now, but I really havent had the time to really go "deep" into it. I've designed a couple of web pages for a few customers, but they were just simple HTML and a few graphics. I really want to learn PHP and MySQL though. I think I might go to the nearest engineering library and grab a few books on those topics and just start messing around.

As always, thanks for your input guys.

Well, it just doesn't seem very useful to me except for limited applications. I don't want you to necessarily be making a career choice based on the opinion of a kid you know through the 'net who isn't even old enough to hold a license. ;) But .NET certainly isn't something I think is worthwhile to pursue.

I've got a pretty full-fledged website running, but likewise no PHP/MySQL knowledge (I was planning to learn it last summer, but got lazy). I'm planning though to at least pick up a PHP book and start reading by Christmas vacation, because it really is one of the most important web languages out there right now. 👍
