To be honest, that's actually the last thing I'd want you to do. Not that what I think should matter to you, but I'm a firm believer that originality should be rewarded, not replicated. There were three elements of S.N.A.I.L. that we took pride in making us unique. With this new ORCA effort, we're down to only one.. Promotion and Relegation.

dsgerbc already called me out on the S.N.A.I.L. thread for worrying that your format was too similar to our format, but based on your statement above, it may get even more similar.. I'd love to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't even know S.N.A.I.L. existed while you were planning this new series, but the fact of the matter is that I told you about S.N.A.I.L. back in December and asked you for help with it.

I know this post if going to get ripped as just a bunch of whining, but just put yourself in my shoes for a second. What if you poured your heart and soul into the Alfa Zagato Cup and reached out to a mentor-figure for help with it, only to have that same mentor-figure launch a competing Alfa Zagato Cup of his own with a very similar format. I'm guessing you wouldn't be cool with it..

I had never heard of S.N.A.I.L. until you first made mention of it in this thread... But after reading your thread, I found it may be something I'd be interested in doing in the future, due in part to the promotion/relegation format (which could technically be called a spin-off of the GTP WRS division format IMO).

I think all online groups and series' draw certain aspects from other series', be it cars, racing formats, divisions, etc... in an attempt to make their product as appealing as possible to other racers.

I also feel that for the most part, the established racers on GTP are pretty loyal to their respective group, organization or fellow racers... I'm not sure how your group works, but there is definitely a loyal group of racers here at ORCA that would be here regardless of what Brandon was putting together. I am aware of another person on GTP who was advertising a Alfa Zagato class as a part of a larger series, even in ORCA threads with Brandon's permission, and to my knowledge, no one signed up for it...

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if you have an appealing product and a loyal or dedicated group of guys, you'll attract people regardless of how similar it may be to another product... And at the very least, having a similar product might get you more business from the ORCA group of racers. 👍

I understand other groups' concerns with ideas and formats being replicated. While I haven't even looked at the SNAIL group, what I can say is that ORCA has a solid foundation of drivers who enjoy racing against each other. I think we (and any other group) should be allowed to run a series or club event that suits our drivers' needs and interests without critcizm. It is not like ORCA members are hanging around other threads trying to steal drivers away to join ours (at least not that I know of, nor would I think of based on who I know). At the end of the day GT5 is a game and is meant for enjoyment. We are not a group that is giving away monetary or valuable prizes to winners.

Edit:
I went back and briefly looked through the SNAIL thread to educate myself on what this group is about. Looks good and sounds like something I would someday be interested in. With that said, I think the idea of spec racing is not entirely new on GTP. In fact the Concours club started what is now considered spec racing quite some time back. I believe with the feature of being able to prohibit tuning, spec racing is going to continue to grow as a theme on GTP. In general, the idea of spec racing and the idea of racing a multitude of cars (not being committed to just one for a 2 month span) is a great deal of what this game is about. These ideas pit driver verse driver, not tune verses tune. With a game of 1000+ cars, it seems a bit silly to commit to one car for a lengthy period of time. There are plenty of groups and series for everyone. What appeals to me most about ORCA are the individuals that I race with and chat with nearly every night. The race layout and car selection is the icing on the cake.

Do we know what track(s) we're running the corvette at?

I've added this week's events to the ORCA calendar which can be found here.

Bleh, too much drama everywhere lately. Must be spring already.

I agree. I guess I'll never be a Race Director because I could care less if there are 1 or 100 groups doing the same thing as me, nor do I care about copying someone else's format. This isn't a patent for a cancer drug we're talking about. A courtesy PM ahead of time is fine if it's something you're aware of but only as a courtesy and only if you're aware of the potential for duplication. But if I sent someone a courtesy email and they told me, "No you can't run this type of car or this race format because I already did" I'd tell them to go suck on a...lemon...yeah lemon... and do it anyway. I would love it if everyone copied the successful Cappy/ORCA format to the letter because I'd have more places to race during the week when I'm more predictably available.

Didn't someone once say that, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? If everyone is copying what you do, you must be doing something right:tup:👍

For MikaelK, I'm old enough to realize that there is no more important skill for a husband/mate than listening to your wife, no matter how painful it is...lol..:ouch: Throw in some poignant and timely, "Oh that's terrible's" and "She's so mean's" and stuff like that and you'll the world's greatest husband for life. 👍👍

Don't worry about not making qualifying and rushing into the race. The three weeks leading up to the organized race week are going to be organized of course, but there are no points, no one is keeping score or tracking results other than for fun on their own. Every race after the first at a track is reverse grid anyway. It's a more relaxed environment, the racing will start at a fixed time each session but will continue on so long as there are people into the room willing to race.

So yeah, double post, where are we running this week? Or we doing a track vote after the first race? Winner picks the next track? :)

Too much for me. I'm just trying to provide a way to avoid open lobbies. I came up with this format based on the VCRC 1 day format, as a way to avoid some of the headaches of a weekly points series. There are only so many ways you can do it with such a large group.

I for one sort of like the idea of the selected tracks for the first 3 weeks being voted on the night of. Eliminates a need for practice, encourages more random pick up races. Or maybe we should pick like 4 or 5 tracks ahead of time that would work for the car of the week, then do a vote.

Not that I will likely make more than a few races, but I also think that voting for the course in the room at the time of the race would be interesting. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and I think that would shake it up a bit. I also don't like to practice, obviously.

In the 450PP club, on the one night of the week they ran a "same make night" the first track of the night was announced ahead of time and then after that it was a vote. I liked that format as it least it gave you a sort of home track and a place to practice to get ready.

Had a chance to run a few short races tonight with Owens, Sagar and some rookie named iForce who was dragging up the rear:) I love this car!!! It has great turn in and braking, more than enough power to kick out the back end if you want to or aren't too careful, but not wild and unpredictable. It's a perfect car/tire combination that worked well on every track from Monza to GVE Reverse to Trial Mountain. The races were very close for the most part.

Tremendously close finish at GVE Reverse!!

Hee, the Monza finish was even closer. :)
Nice photos, Yuri. 👍

And thank you, Yuri, your photos brought the terrible tragedy that took place this evening to my attention. Unbeknownst to myself, my helmet colour did not complement my chassis colour; the colours clashed in a most distasteful manner. No wonder Trackbound and Brandon ran away as soon as I entered the room. :yuck:
I hope that will never happen again.

Didn't run away because of that Sag...just getting a little late. I did want to stick around to see just what sort of tude adjustment takes Owens so long ;). The Vette was definitely a blast last night. Had a ton of fun on Trial (doesn't hurt that it is one of my favorite tracks). The more I ran the Vette the more I felt like I could get to 75% throttle earlier in the turn. It seemed a little sensitive at first, but it really is a great car to drive and race. Hoping to get on early enough tonight.

Hey guys, I got home to find out my apartment building is without Internet so I can't host tonight. The cable company says "we're working on it".

Owens is going to host the Vette races tonight. It should basically just run like a normal race night. 10 minute qualifying session at 8, 2 back-to-back races, 2nd being reverse grid. I suggest 5-7 laps each at a track like Autumn Ring Full, GVE or Trial Mountain. No points, just for fun/practice.

Fantastic fun tonight guys. This Vette is utterly awesome!!

We raced:

Grand Valley East Reverse

Trial Mountain

3/8mi Left Handed Oval

1/2mi Left Handed Tri-Oval

Car was super fun on all tracks we used. The little Ovals really do it for me. Got that small circle track feel.

Thank you guys for coming out tonight.

I thought SH tires would have to much grip for the vette.... I was very wrong
Fun car to drift err drive 👍

^ Glad you liked it. I think it's incredibly fun on the SH tires, but still nice and slippy. It was too loose on CS but is a treat on SH. :)

I've not driven it yet in spec format: The one I had in my garage had an engine upgrade on it, so I bought a brand new one and have only got as far as changing the oil.

Anyone coming out to play this evening? I should be online about 8:30 GMT and if there are enough of us we can start racing about 9 GMT.

As I finally got the time yesterday to finish the last 1,5 hours of my A-spec challenge, the 24 hour of Le Mans, I rewarded my self with the luxury of hiring a driver to get the engine up for business on my otherwise mint-conditioned chevy.

So I hope I can make it for the session tonight, as I also need to get a feeling for the car :)

The Orca_champ lounge is open for this evening's shenanigans.

I'll be in a lil late, if that's ok. Back of the pack is fine with me. Just wanna drive the Vette again. LOL

There was only Mikael, carr and me there tonight, and I've now left. I'll be back tomorrow night though. The vette is a handful but really enjoyable to drive. We were taking it round Cape Ring South.

Got tied up. I'm gonna jump in about, hopefully and drive the Vette.

Aww... I didn't realize you guys were starting this soon, or that there was a new thread. I'll try to make Friday night, Saturday conflicts with my series.

I must admit that Sports Hard on this car do feel a bit too slippery for my taste.
After that RD and carracer left, I did try with Sports Medium, and instantly got a much better experience of actually driving a car on a track, rather than coasting a barrel around on a frozen lake...
The car would still kick out the rear, if not carefully braking into the corners, or too quick to just floor the gas pedal.

But might just be me... ;)

No matter what tires, I will recommend to set ABS off, and try adjusting on the brakebalance to get the 'perfect' match. It does make the ride much easier and controllable, at least when using wheel and pedals.
I tried it inspired by carracer, and by a setting of brakebalance like 5/3 or 3/1, one can start to use both the gas and brake together to steer the car :D

I for one am a huge fan of the SH on the Vette. I thought it had a nice mix of control and raceability with a good bit of power sliding through the turns. Owens and I talked about the ABS thing the other night. I have tried it numerous times and just don't feel it feels realistic at all. Just my 2 cents on this topic...sorry to disagree so much Mikael ;).

^ No offence taken ;)
And I do know it is a matter of personal taste and liking.

It is probably just about practice for me, to get the feeling for the SH.

About ABS off, it is definetly by personal preference.
And I just wanted to notify others, that it might would be something to test on their own.
I wouldn't have tried it, if not carracer had said he was going to try. However, I don't ifhe liked it or not.
At least, I did... :)
