OSU .vs. Texas...who's gonna win?

Well it is a little late to give my prediction, but I would have picked OSU.

I will say that the game was a really good one. I do think that OSU should have won the game because they pretty much gave the game to Texas. When you have to kick five field goals to put points on the board, instead of touchdowns, your chances of winning are severely hurt. It also does not help that the one guy dropped a touchdown pass that should have been extremely, extremely easy to catch. Not only was he wide freakin' open, but the pass could not have been put in a better spot.

Ohio State's linebackers played a heck of a game, especially after the first couple of drives when it was starting to look like Texas would be able to do whatever they wanted to do against OSUs defense. Adjustments to OSUs defense changed that and caused Vince Young to beat OSU with his arm, which he did do. Even after this game, I still question Young's ability to throw the ball, as this is really the first big game in which he has beaten a team with his arm. I cringe every time he throws the ball; he has to have the most ugly throwing motion in all of football. Though I do think Young's passing ability was made to look better by some miscues by Ohio State's secondary. Was it just me, or did it look like the OSU CB pulled up a little on the Texas winning touchdown pass? And I am not talking about the DB who hit the Texas WR, but instead the one trailing the WR. But then again, it may have just been my perception that the OSU DBs should have been doing a better job in coverage. I just felt like compared to the LBs, they didn't raise their game enough to match what the LBs were doing.

But my entire problem with Texas's win all comes back to OSU complete lack of ability to put the ball into the endzone. Texas's defense did do a good job of stopping OSUs offense. But the again, for the last couple of years I have seriously thought OSUs offense has not been all that great. I would be pissed off if I was one of the OSU LBs because of the lack of touchdown support from their offense.

In the end though, you have to at least give Texas a little bit of props. They kept themselves in the game and it only helped them that OSU could not put the ball into the endzone.

What's up, everyone? I covered the game in my most recent college football rundown. Go down, click on the link to my college football thread, and you'll see my thoughts on this week's games.

With that said, good job to the Texas Longhorns. One tough opponent down, one to go (Oklahoma). Maybe they can knock them down later this year.

i did so-so in that thread with my 3 early season picks.

bowling green didn't beat wisconsin, but they sure got closer than anybody thought they would and omar jacob confirmed my theory that he is the best passer in college ball.

notre dame beat michigan as i predicted.

texas beat ohio state as i predicted as well, but not as badly as i thought they would. vincent young pretty much did it singlehandedly with all of the drops and stupid mistakes the rest of the team was making. i only saw one really bad mistake made by vince, the rest were made by the coaches and players around him. i also have to apologize for underestimating AJ hawk. he was absolutely brilliant as was carpenter. even schleigel was halfway decent but he just got overshadowed by those two monsters. definitely the best linebacking corps i've seen in a long time at the college level.

@ JohnBM, i havn't really said anything to you personally yet but i just wanted to let you know that i'm pleased to make your acquaintence. i don't bump into that many people that know almost as much as me about football, especially the college game. we're going to be pals 👍

Edit: one more tough game (oklahoma)??? eeek i think not. after that display saturday night, i don't think UT will have a tough time against a team with no qb that got beaten by a team that got beaten by SMU

what i'm hoping is that everybody takes a loss and ohio state will be #2 at the end of the year and we'll be treated to the rematch of that gem of a game. it's not really so far fetched. i just feel like USC will stumble and when they do, they will absolutely be out of the picture. there is so much grumbling about their schedule they will probably drop to 8th or lower with a loss. LSU is the darling of course and that late late game was one hell of a beauty against arizona state, but going undefeated in the SEC is very tough and i doubt they can pull it off with all the trouble ASU gave them. i highly doubt OSU will lose again, not with that linebacking corps. if vincent young wasn't by far the best player in the country, OSU would have simply shut UT down. anyway, enough babbling, my point is that OSU vs. UT "the rematch" could happen in the rose bowl, USC and LSU just have to lose one.

Thank you, Mr. Max E. I guess I've been credited with making college sports a nice topic of discussion. I'll try to keep it going with college hoops in a few months, but regardless, thanks for the kind words. I got two out of my three predictions right. Only problem with the one I got right was that I predicted Overtime for Texas @ Ohio State.

Texas and Ohio State. That was one hell of a game, man. I still got mad respect for the Longhorns, and some people even think the national title game will be Southern Cal and Texas. And think about it. It isn't easy to go to Ohio State's horseshoe wearing the Away Colors, and beat them even with OhSU's rowdy fans. Vince Young and company stepped up when they had to and silenced perhaps the largest college football stadium other than Neyland Stadium.

I'm telling you. Texas at Ohio State has to be a "Game of the Year" contender.

OSU did not hand the game to Texas. Texas handed the game to OSU and they dropped it. ALL THOSE TURNOVERS!!! MY GOD!! If you can't win a game after that many turnovers then you certainly didn't deserve to win. I think it's a testiment to Texas's team that they managed to beat number 4 even after shooting themselves in the foot multiple times.

And yet, you just proved my point. How can you not say OSU handed the game to Texas? Three turnovers in opponents territory and all you get out of it is three field goals, sounds like an offense needs to be redone and made more productive. Not only that, but OSU was just asking for Texas to beat them. OSU was basically saying, "Here take the game from us, since we are so inadequate to pull away and take the game". Well I shouldn't say the entire OSU team was saying that, just the offense.

I think both teams played hard, even with the setbacks. The way I've learned it, you will have your mistakes, but only as long as you're able to make up for them and work to a higher calling. Only one thing matters in situations like this- getting more points than the other team. It's not about taking a beating and linking it, it's about having the game come to you. You work around it and even with setbacks, you can still will lmost more than 8)% of the time. Then too, why would you want to "give" another team the victory in a close game? WHY would you do that?

Anyhow, they both played well, but all that mattered was the big W.

I agree that both teams played hard. Its just that in OSUs situation with three turnovers in Texas territory, they have to capitalize and they did not do so. Not taking those opportunities to full effect just says to Texas come take the game from us, not literally I mean; but it just gives Texas more motivation to play that much harder, knowing that more than likely OSU won't be able to score touchdowns.

hold on a second. there is obsolutely no doubt in my mind that texas tried to give the game to osu way more than the contrary. that's just ludacrous. nevermind all the turnovers, texas had a plethora of dropped balls and whenever it seemed like they were about to drive the stake, the committed some brainless foot-shooter of a penalty that turned 3rd and 2 into 3rd and 7 (or worse). texas only won this game because vincent young was unstoppable even in the face of what looks to me like one of the best defenses in the country. i don't think either team will lose again and i hope they play once more this season.

FYI Vash, as a matter of course, the team that gives the ball up 3 times in thier own territory is the one giving the game away, not the team failing to capitalize.

I understand Texas was the team trying to give the game away with the turnovers. But both teams did a very nice job of doing so. I just feel that OSU failing to capitalize on the turnovers did a better job of giving the game away. Not too mention the fact they killed five field goals with another missed attempts. You cannot have that many opportunities in the opponents territory and not score touchdowns.

To add insult to injury, I heard that someone gave one of the Ohio State players some hate mail because of dropped balls. And I mean, come on. Texas is no cupcake team. Then too, it's just a sport. You'll have your good games and your bad ones. From losses, you learn to move on and try to correct the mistakes even if your next opponent is nothing like your previous one.

Ohio State matched up to a team that was on their level and came up short. The burnt orange crew in Austin just handed the Buckeyes a tough loss, so what can you say about it? I like both teams. People said this game was like a battle for the National Championship. If that was true and Texas/Ohio State was the big matchup, I guess you could say that Texas would have won it all.

I'm sure the person you are talking about is the guy who was wide freakin' open in the end zone and had a perfect pass directed towards him. Not only did he miss the very easy catch once, not twice, but a third time. Granted on the third try, he finally got hit, but that is beside the point. It should have never had to come to a third chance for a catch.

UPDATE! The hate mail recipient in question for the OSU Buckeyes is Tight End Ryan Hamby.

Yeah, that is who I was talking about. It is kinda ridiculous though that the OSU fans would go to such lengths to ridicule a player. No one deserves such a showing of lack of resepct.

that was pure karma. the very play before the ball was thrown over hamby and two defender's heads out of the back of the end zone and hamby shoved one of the defenders in the back out of the end zone and onto the concrete unnecesarily. that's what you get for being a dick.

he sure did get blasted didn't he?
