Ouya: Android-Based gaming console

Many of you probably don't know this but there is a new game system on the block it's called the Ouya (pronounced oo-yah) and it just released today!! The Ouya only costs $100 and is only 3 inches long on each side. But it runs on an Android OS Android 4.1 Jellybean to be exact. It uses a 1.7 GHz quad core ARM Cortex-A9 and has 8 GB of internal flash memory. The Ouya also has 1 GiB DDR3 SDRAM as memory.

What do you guys think about the little Ouya?

Does it still suck?

I'm interested but I heard it sucks. So if it still sucks I'm not interested. If it doesn't suck then I am interested.

Didn't even know the Ouya was set to be released today until GAME sent me a newsletter about it last week.

For $99 you get what you pay for I suppose, although I maintain that most of the games available on it are still better suited to a Droid phone. The idea did catch my eye initially but having the ability to play those on your TV seems more of a novelty than anything else. As of now it doesn't appear to be all that brilliant, but in time that might change.

Also, an overview of a Kickstarter version I watched a few days ago:

I thought the Ouya was supposed to be running a nVidia Tegra 3 chipset?

You would be correct.

I saw a pre-release review that said it was pretty terrible. I know it'll improve as time goes on; everything does from iOS to Steam - oh, er, except for the Windows 7 to 8 transition... I hope they don't go under before they have a chance to fix it though, unlike OnLive. If it's running a Tegra I wonder if it'll be able to support Nvidia Shield-like game streaming? I'd buy several in an instant if it could do that.

Edit: Two seconds later, I found that it's the Tegra 4 that can do game streaming. Gah.

What amazes me is the price you pay $100 for something that will get better with time and the new Xbox One costing 5x that and the PS4 costing 4x it's kind of a steal... And the little guy is just so small and when people come In and say what is that? you can say of its an Ouya....what you've never heard of it?

That controller looks like one of those "40 games in 1!" things with the TV hookups that you buy for $20 off some Chinese website and comes with 39 variations of Tetris and one version of Tetris Attack.

And the best part is the games are only available in Chinese!! Except one version of Tetris.... It's in Japanese.

Yeah, but when it's just a mobile phone without a screen, mobile Internet or the ability to make calls the price kind of makes sense. I'm more interested in what it can do besides playing Android games to be honest! If it can do Netflix properly I might have to get one, otherwise I think a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black would be cheaper and smaller XBMC devices. I think you can install Android on them too.

It's really not pretty, is it? What were they thinking with that battery placement?

You get 4x less console as well.

There is nothing really wrong with it but it is what it is, a cheap android gaming device that connects to your TV. It's never going to compete with proper consoles.

Yeah I would have to wait until Netflix becomes available to get one if I am. Hopefully they're working on improving the OS. They should give it a browser so you can search the web and maybe give it a online shopping app like amazon maybe eBay.

For better success they need devs to start making Android games with it in mind. As the reviewer stated further up (Love Ashens by the way, check out his reviews of Chinese knock off stuff, very funny) most games still feel like they'd be better with a screen in front of your face and accelerometer controls because that's what they were designed for.

If some devs start doing more games designed for a controller and TV it might get more popular.

Or they could've gone the other way and had a touchscreen controller like the Wii U has, but that would've made it much, much more expensive so maybe not. In fact it would probably be cheaper to just buy a phone.

Other similar devices I'm keen to know more about are the Gamestick (that small HDMI stick is the console...):

And the Nvidia Shield. $300 is a bit much for a handheld though, especially when I only really want it so I can stream my PC games to any TV in the house.

This thing is ugly:

I used to be pretty excited about OUYA up untill the reviews and their plans on annualizing it was revealed. It also seems rather lackluster at the moment. I'll see in a year how the console is doing.

Don't blame the app. I've just searched for "ouya" on the app, and found this thread very easily.

I do. I've yet to actually bother playing a game on it, but yeah I've got one buried somewhere.
