Pace up or overtake button faster?

When you tell Bob to "Pace Up", he'll try to pass when he thinks he can pass, in other words, it's up to him to decide. If you tell him to "Overtake", he'll try to pass in any which way.

In my experience, "Pace Up" is *safer* but also can end up in a disaster if Bob has been in the red for a while. "Overtake" is more dangerous, imho, because he'll usually do some pretty stupid maneuvers attempting to pass. So to answer your question, "Overtake" will make Bob pass faster but is also riskier.

I have found that Overtake really is a more aggressive approach. Since my main driver likes it on the cool side, I never use the overtake feature. He always ends up farther behind when I use it. For him, pace up is the way to go. He only passes when it is clear he will get through.

Overtake will make Bob try to pass others then wait for the next command. Pace up doesn't always necessary make Bob pass others but he will try to pick up speed. That's how it has been working for me.

When teaching a Bob I pound the overtake button incessantly at the start of a race until he gets through the pack has a good lead...by level 8 he is a very aggressive SOB...regardless of his 'cool' factor....:D

If you use overtake and he fails, then he drops way back. So overtake is great when it works, but it had better work.

And if there isn't anyone around for him to pass, his temperament will cool down and he will slow down his pace.

I use overtake at start then when he's in the lead I pace down quickly so he doesn't go out of control, once he's low enough where he's still aggressive without going out of control I do a maintain. I come back once in a while to make sure he's not too cool. Or if he's leading way ahead then I don't care if he's cool. On close races, I keep it monitored and push him to the max without him going out of control. I have to be really careful at places where he usually spins out and make sure that when he's at that spot, he's relatively cooled to the point that he doesn't lose control. Once he's passed that spot, I pace up again.

Many people don't do this but from what I found, "Keep this pace" (the green straight arrow works just as well.) Let me explain. This is when and why I used all the pace buttons.

Pace Up: When on straights and catching up to a driver, I tell him to push it a bit more to see if he is able to pass the driver in front of him.

Pace Down: When I see that when he tries to gun it around the corner and ends up spinning out or understeering. I tell him to pace down so he calms down and then I use....

Keep Pace: People don't know this but keeping pace, especially on tracks with a lot of turns, works very well. Don't use this when he is all the way at the red, use it when he is in the bottom half of the red to middle that way it stays slightly aggressive but composed.

Overtake: I use this mainly on turns because if you haven't noticed, if you push this before a turn you will see that his braking point has moved up for that turn making him out brake the driver in front. He may not pass the other driver but even so, he has moved up closer to the car in front.

When to use it:
Pace Up: Straight aways and small turns that allow your driver to be flat out.
Keep Pace: When in the lead or top 3, helps them handle the pressure of close racing.
Pace Down: When you notice your driver is starting to mess up and/or when you see your driver's car has less then 50% tread left.
Overtake: On turns so that your driver can out-brake your opponent and when your driver is on the tail of the car in front of him.

Mashing Pace Up and Overtake doesn't work on all tracks, so just take my advice for those other tracks where you are having difficulty. Remember, you don't win the race on the first lap, only on the last turn.

On the contrary, once my driver has hit a main straight (Tunnel at Monaco, Fuji Straight, La Sarthe, Nurburgring) Ive found that wheather he's on Pace Up or Down, he still has the throttle floored, so i give him a bit of a cool down, so he can take the next turn like the sophisticated beast of a driver he is :)
