Pad vs Wheel

i'm not a GT pro but my 5cents since getting a wheel

Probably not a huge difference between them, advantage of joystick is that you can easily steer left or right max in an instant, with a wheel you have to rotate it completely against the force feedback.

Wheel on the other hand gives more precision, but I think PD did a very good job with the joystick on this front too. If you set the right joystick on a controller to Accel & Brake you can get precision there as well.

I tend to get better times on controller but use the wheel since it's fun, sometimes I can't be bothered with it though.

As for Leaderboards, people who are car\driving game enthusiasts will probably want the full experience the simulations can offer, so the popularity of Wheels on the Leaderboard might not reflect necessity but rather popularity.

That's from a noob perspective anyway, if you are stuck with a controller I don't see any reason why you can't enjoy GT5 though, Polyphony did a very good job with the DS3 controls and are one of the few console developers that let you re-map controls, also their use of the vibration for traction feedback is great.

I drive with a DFGT I picked up a few months after GT5's release. I love it compared to using a controller. It's prolonged my love of the game and it has made me a much better driver. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade to a T500 soon 'cuz I'm hooked.
I will say though that I have one complaint (and I'd love to hear any wheel user's feedback on this) when it comes to pad vs. wheel in GT5. I cannot compete with stick users in the rain! It's much more difficult to keep a car from sliding on a wet track with a wheel because of the finer steering control. Maybe it's just me and I'm terrible in the rain but it is very frustrating having a 170$ wheel + a 300$ rig and not be able to compete with 20$ controller user.

What is best steering Wheel for the GT5?

If by 'best' you mean the most realistic, then in my honest opinion I would be leaning towards the Thrustmaster T500RS or the Logitech G27/25. You could also look towards the Fanatec wheels for realism but be aware that they are not fully supported by the game and that you will have to stick with the button configurations that the game gives you.

Uh...what're you talking about? I've used two Fanatec sets and I've had both configured exactly the way I like it, having changed well over half of the button configurations "that the game gave me." The G27 I had for a month was the one I couldn't configure (though I can't say I tried too hard to do it).

To my eyes, wheels are better. For example, with the ds3 I could only achieve silver trophies at the AMG Academy advanced and that Murciélago event of the Gran Tour Special Events. Later I managed gold fairly easily on all of them with a DFGT after some training.

Really? I mean, really? Come on... it ain't rocket science. :dunce:

LOL. No, it's not. Apparently, I just didn't remember correctly. Now that I think about it, I think my problem with the buttons wasn't that I couldn't configure them, it was that they weren't so easy to reach while driving :dunce:

I don't drive my car or truck with a pad ! I find using a wheel (along with a stable stand) much more enjoyable than using the pad. I use an old Logitech GT wheel with the paddle shifters. I hope to upgrade at some point when the Missus lets me !
I prefer a manual transmission in a car.But when I test drove a VW GTI , I picked a DSG equipped car to compare the GT wheel paddle shifters to a real car :) .

I own many wheels from both Logitech and Fanatec and will tell you the best wheel for Gt5 and GT5 only is the DFGT. Now after you played GT5 for a few months with the DFGT and decide you want to make sim racing your hobby then sell your DFGT and get a more expensive wheel, rig, PC, Buttkickers ,etc.
If you get burned out of racing after GT5 then you will be glad you didn't waste your money on more expensive wheels.
DFGT is the best entry wheel on the market.
