Paint Shop.

I'd like to be able to have a car spray shop, where you can just paint your own designs on the cars, think paint shop, where the canvas is the car :). Granted, this couldn't be done in online play, but it would be great for single player.

do you mean like you win some races, drive well, Castrol offers you $ to put logos on your car? If so, that would be an interesting dynamic and parallel some reality as racers who perform well, get better deals and more $.

in reality, thats basically the way it works.

sponsorships actually work in a few different ways:
A) series sponsor - sponsors a whole series, and the cars have to run their banner/logo. The late motorolla cup is an example of this
B) contingency sponsor - a company will sponsor a whole series, but you are not required to run their stickers. If you use their product, (like tire brand), run the proper stickers, then you get $XXXX for 1st place, $XXX for 2nd place, etc.
C) "regular" sponsor - a company invests in one race car. that car is festooned with graphics for that one company (like most NASCAR cars...). This requires them to notice your good performance, and see the value in the marketing platform of a front-running race car.

Given the way a lot of games are implementing such 'career' ideals GT4 may just follow suit. I think that's a bit too 'professional racing' for the style of most of the game though.

I think what a lot of people liked about Auto Modellista was that you could customize your car and garage accordingly. Of course to many, the game was a disappointment. What stood out to me was, of course, customization. I know I talked with Eagle in my "The Debut of LMP Race Cars" topic, and he mentioned having red cars for my genetically-called team name of "Eagle Motorsports." So if you wanted to make a car a racer, you'd just stylize your car accordingly. But if you ask me, I don't mind doing my cars the way I want to design them. I'm sure there may be some skins you can use for generic paint schemes (such as Gran Turismo, Castrol, Mobil 1, Texaco, and stuff like that).

Oh, and one more thing... if paint was implemented, I'd like to have the old Castrol colors for the Tom's GT500 Supra before moving to this weird paintscheme late in 2001. Then, it would be nice to see the Castrol Supra from the first Gran Turismo. I think this car was pretty popular and was very noticable in Gran Turismo. So why not bring it back? Nostalgia, people! And of course, the race car from 1996 would make its debut on PS2, so it will probably look shiny and cool compared to its GT1 and GT2 counterparts.

Do you mean the 1996 Castrol TOM'S Supra JGTC?;)

having a paint shop like this would greatly add to the personaliztion aspect of gt4 along with aero parts. i think it is important to represent all aspects of "car culture" whether it is ricey, tacky, cool, stupid looking or whatever. being narrow minded and impircal about cars isnt gonna help the gt community

edit cant seem to get linking to work
so copy and paste into browser...

I like the idea of a Paint Shop/Paint Change option.

An Example: I hate Red cars, simply despise them. Just not my thing (I am sure each of you have a car color you don't like too). I feel the same about Yellow, but more relevant to this issue, I HATE RED!!!!

Well, I am also a huge American Car fan (British too), and in GT3 there was a distinct shortage of cool USA-made cars. One was the Ford Mustang Cobra.....

The problem? It only came in Red!!!!! Now, as any American resident knows, the Mustang can be found in a trillion different colors, even the SVT Cobra version.

So I din't use it as much (or at all) as I would have if I could have had one in Black (my preferred Color) or some Dark Green Variation (2nd Fav).

Long story not-so-short, BRING ON THE PAINT SHOP OPTION!!!

"Ridge Racer V" had a design system where you could actually customize your team colors. I know I have mine, and you can choose from three different types of wheels, three color schemes, but in terms of canning the generic Namco game sponsorship, you had no choice. Of course, I wouldn't want to have a VW Beetle Cup Car with Pac-Man livery. I would, however, be able to come up with color schemes to represent my racing "team." I think anyone into racing has their picks for what color scheme the person's team wants to be.

By the way, Blackfish. If you don't like red, don't look into what plans my mad scientist in Sydney, Australia (Eagle) has planned to stylise his cars. I think he's going for red colors.

Oh, hey. Here's a different question I have to ask. Does anyone know if you may be able to upload your designs on PC, then load it to the PS2 to do your cars? I mean, you have a chance to use Photoshop (or Paint if you're not very good, even though I recommend Paint Shop Pro from Jasc) and design your cars wonderfully, just in case GT4 is limited. Anyone know if this is possible?

I would seriously doubt that's an option, you'd have to edit a texture file in a compatible format, so unless GT4 textures and Photoshop formats are compatible straight out of the box, that wouldn't be an option. I remember someone saying they modelled the cars in Maya, can anyone confirm that? If we could get access to the same sort of program they used to produce the cars then we could create our own textures and even our own cars but that raises the problem that these cars wouldn't be the same as everyone elses online, they'd be hybrids, so they'd either be unfair or banned, and if people start flooding the net with crappy cars it looks bad for PD. I can't see PD releasing an editor as an expansion for GT4 so I'd say the in game palette is all you're going to get.

And yes, I'm going to have a team of Maranello Red cars at my disposal. Forza Ferrari.

A paint shop would be a fantastic idea. I would love to paint cars in pearlescent, metallic, and gloss paints. I always felt the paint jobs in the previous GT's were to limiting. Stock manufacturer colors usually do suck.

/me smells a NFSU player.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, I myself am one.

One thing that always confused me about the GT games was that some cars wouldn't be available in the most basic colours you can think of, and instead had these terrible hues only an art student could appreciate. The Paint Shop may be our key to undoing these injustices.

Paint shop would be good, most of the time i dont care to much about the paint as theres no colour i despise (well pink on a car is just wrong unless its a new beetle :|). However personal licence plates would be nice!, theres already the name choice thingy for top lap times just need a way to put that name onto youre cars plates..

I'm curious where the number plates are on an LMP :D

That's an interesting paint scheme greenlightning. I remember seeing a Playboy sponsored V8 supercar at Bathurst a year or two back.

I think the most realistic option we could look forward to in this respect would be a large(ish) list of 'racing' style colour schemes, either made-up or existing (ie a large well known company such as Castrol) that can be 'skined' onto which ever car you choose. This could be best implimented if they brought back the 'race modifications' to stock cars that they dropped in GT3 (GT2?) the race mods could be available to a large selection of the stock cars (available to all might be asking too much). Then when you upgrade your car to 'race mods' it initially comes just in white. Next you could take it to the 'paint shop' and 'skin' it with which ever livery you want from the available choices. In addition to this you could change the number on your car as well (who else isn't looking forward to racing online against a whole field of similar cars all identical, even down to the numbers!?) This way, when you go racing you can pretty much have your own identity, especially when you further enhance your individuallity with your own choice of wheels.

I can't see the manufactuers going for a 'pearlesent lime green over orange' on any of their vehicles. BMW wouldn't even let you change the wheels on GT2/3.

In GT3 you could change the rims... just did on my Bimmer... GT2 it was locked. In GT3 just the 4 concepts (Viper GTR, RX8, RSX, Z) and F1 cars had locked rims.

Hopefully the paint shop will let you choose from a broad range of colour... if you really want a pink viper you should be able to get one. In all seriousness, it would be cool if you could also edit the colour of the racing stripes separately... so on a car that had stripes as an option you could select them and the colour independantly from the body.

Speaking of vipers hopefully we will be able to have it in blue with white stripes again via paintshop :) Also i like the idea of being able to 'skin' cars with a choice of racing livery hopefully i will be able to make my RGT look like my avatar if the real thing is not included

Depends how textures are actually handled and whether a unique file is created for each car or a generic colour is applied to a texture file and loaded... If we're working with unique texture files for each colour you won't be changing your stripes, if they apply a NFSU style vinyl layer approach then maybe.

How about this for a paint scheme ?

Nice pic of 'the Pig', greenlighting.
I hadn't seen that car since the Porsche Victory By Design show, Alain DeCadenet (I just know I spelled his name wrong) told of an interesting anecdote where he took part in a race where that car participated also, and how the 'huge vortex' it left behind as it went by cleared him off the road.

I believe that car was only painted that way since it lacked a sponsor. Ironically, some of the best paintjobs in racing have been worn by non-sponsored cars.

Looks ugly as hell to me :D And it also looks like it would create quite the aerodynamic disturbance.

Btw, we're not going to get to edit our own skins for a few reasons. It's hard to implement, it means people can come up with crap like they do in NFSU. Bad words could be filtered I guess but there are limits...
