Paris Hilton gets 45 days in jail

Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton has been jailed for 45 days after being found guilty of violating her probation for a drink-driving conviction.
A Los Angeles judge ruled she must start her sentence on 5 June and has no prospect of an early release.

Ms Hilton told the judge she was very sorry and that she would "pay complete attention to everything" from now on.

The socialite said she did not know her licence had been suspended when caught driving without headlights in February.

According to papers filed in Los Angeles' Superior Court, Ms Hilton was stopped by California Highway Patrol officers on 15 January and informed she was driving on a suspended licence.

The 26-year-old then reportedly signed a document acknowledging she was not allowed to drive.

On 27 February, she was stopped by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for speeding on Sunset Boulevard with her car's headlights off and charged with violating her probation.

Although Ms Hilton maintained she was not aware her licence had been suspended, court papers said the document she signed in January was found in her car's glove compartment.

She was also accused of failing to enrol in an alcohol education programme by a court-ordered deadline.

Late entrance

Ms Hilton was sentenced to three years' probation, fined $1,150 (£582), and lost her licence at the end of January after pleading no contest to a drink driving charge in September.

Despite prosecutors saying the heiress deserved a jail sentence prior to Friday's hearing, Ms Hilton arrived at the court at least 10 minutes late.

Hilton first gained notoriety for her constant partying as a teenager
One of the world's most photographed women, her arrival attracted a swarm of paparazzi at a courthouse whose most glamorous work usually consists of dealing with parking fines.

Her mother, Kathy, laughed when the demand for a custodial sentence was made during the prosecution's closing argument and asked Judge Michael Sauer for his autograph.

"I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything," Ms Hilton told the court before she was sentenced.

"I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all," she said. But the judge was unmoved.

The 26-year-old heiress wept when the ruling was announced, and her mother shouted at the prosecutor: "You're pathetic."

One of Ms Hilton's lawyers said the jail sentence was unfair.

"To sentence Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail to me was uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous. I think she was singled out because she's who she is," Howard Weitzman said.

If Ms Hilton does not report to jail on 5 June she will face 90 days behind bars.

Ms Hilton, heiress to the Hilton Hotel fortune, first gained notoriety for her constant partying as a teenager.

The BBC's David Willis says the austere surrounding of the all-women's detention centre will be a far cry from the five-star luxury the hotel heiress has become used to.

What her fellow inmates will make of her, and she of them, remains to be seen, our correspondent says.

I'm suprised nothing has been post about this considering how high-profile she is.

To be honest i really don't want to give this waste of space any more publicity than she already gets, but after reading this follow-up story...

Who the hell see's Paris Hilton as a role model? What is she a role model for - parasites?

:D

Celebs tend to get away with things, look at George Michael and the numerous times he's been unfit behind the wheel, etc, Pete Doherty, etc. Might end up different as it's in the States, but as you say who would consider her a role model? Teenage boys who download porn videos?

TMZ.com
TMZ has learned that Paris Hilton has switched attorneys in a desperate attempt to save her ass.

Hilton has jumped from famed criminal defense lawyer Howard Weitzman to famed DUI defense lawyer Richard Hutton. TMZ spotted Hilton bawling as she drove away Hutton's office Tuesday afternoon, with mom Kathy driving -- and consoling -- her daughter.

Hilton is in a true pickle and it seems she's throwing a Hail Mary by hiring Hutton, hoping she can convince the courts she shouldn't serve 45 days in the pokey. This could be the most expensive DUI case ever.

I'm amazed at the amount of stupidity contained in a single person.

Even funnier is the Paris Hilton petition

Although I prefer the No Clemency for Paris Hilton Petition

Yes, hardly the 'inspiration' to those of us living our 'mundane lives'... she breaks the law, ignores the conditions of her probation, breaks the law again and still they think she is being unfairly treated because she's a celebrity? I reckon that anyone else who had done what she has done would have been treated in exactly the same manner.

Ignorance is really no excuse - I reckon if you are done for drink-driving, it might have crossed your mind that your license would be suspended. It's a sure sign that Ms Hilton is far too used to having everything spoon-fed to her.... perhaps jail is harsh, but at the very least she should have got a very substantial amount of community service. Maybe some time spent in the real world would do her a power of good, and show the kids that she is supposedly an inspiration to that massive riches and privilege do not buy you the right to behave like a brainless moron and get away with it.

Also I read that she will be in an isolated area for jail...away from everyone else...already special treatment

They have to do that for celebs. Otherwise they tend to be a lot of trouble for the guards. Celebs simply won't be treated like the rest of us in jail - and so they have to be isolated. Otherwise jail is a far worse (or even better) sentence for them than it is for anyone else.

Michael Jackson goes to jail like anyone else? Death sentence.
Snoop Dog goes to jail like anyone else? Hardly noticeable, he'd be a king.

Either way it doesn't work.

It is my view that celebrities that are jailed should all be put together in their own purpose-built prison and forced to socialise with each other for punishment. As an ironic twist on their celebrity status, their every move should be captured on camera and broadcast live in an attempt to show the public what these people are really like and to humiliate them into behaving like normal human beings. Unfortunately, however, if it is not properly monitored, it can all go horribly wrong...

(For those of you who don't know, this is a pic from 'Celebrity Big Brother', and the guy on the left is the infamous George Galloway MP.
Infact, he is my MP here in Bethnal Green and Bow, East London... man, what did I do to deserve that??)

I doubt she even spends a night in jail. Due to overcrowding, she'll likely be released within a few hours (Michelle Rodriguez was released within 2 hours of her 60-day sentence).

Attention people of Los Angeles: If there ever was an incentive not to commit a crime, it's to prevent overcrowding in L.A.'s jails so Paris can serve her full sentence. We need you to make this possible.

I really want to see her in an orange jumpsuit.

They do make you wear those in America, right?

I cant believe they really sentenced her for 45 days in jail 👍

About the special treat in prison... I wouldnt give that to a celeb. They should learn from their mistakes and not have a single cabin somewhere far away from the other prisoners.

The thing is, now that Paris is getting jailed, she will be even more famous the before.... :(

Chris:)

I usually don't post in topics just to say this, but honestly...

Who cares?

I agree.

But, she's not getting special treatment. She has to share a 12x8' jail cell and can only leave it for one hour a day. During that one hour, she can either watch TV, go outside, talk on the phone or go get something from the snack machines. She's only been separated from 'general population' and that's it.

That's hardly 'special treatment.'

Paris Hilton going down

But then that's nothing new.

Paris has the same rights as everyone else and so should be treated like everyone else. No pardon for you, Paris.

Also I read that she will be in an isolated area for jail...away from everyone else...already special treatment

makes sense though, it would be far to dangerous for her to be put in among everybody else, since everybody knows her, although she should be in jail for the time anyway she obviously knew she was banned, so there is no excuss

It makes my blood boil to see stars having special treatment, she should be put with the general population in a normal sell with all the others and be made to suffer... eitherwise it will be just like staying in a budget hotel!

Is Richard Hutton Paris' lawyer?

Apparently:

TMZ.com
Yesterday, Hutton met with Paris and informed her that the Sheriff has agreed to reduce the amount of time she'll have to serve to 23 days. The Sheriff has also agreed to put her in a celebrity cell, away from the general population.

That's is the stupidest, crappiest, saddest show of force coming from this waste of human space

Wth! Now she gets a reduced sentence?

Wtf makes this slut so d*mn special? It's not like she's going to repay anyone any special favors since the only thing she's good at is frowned upon by most of the U.S.

How about this?

Paris Hilton released from LA jail early

also, from the same article
Hilton was housed in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. She didn't have a cellmate.
