[PC] DCS 1.5 & 2.0 Open Alpha

Don't stress, just watch the video tutorials and you'll be flying in no time. The game just looks intimidating, trust me.
tried it but the annoying thing is my keyboard doesn't have a home key which you need for something

You can remap the controls to other keys.
Engine starting is one of those things that you can map with 2 modifiers and a button you never use.

I assume you're referring to the in-game videos, right? Are there any good YouTubers with easy-to-follow tutorials? I keep bouncing off trying to learn basic procedures in favour of the Flaming Cliffs jets and the Huey...

@neema_t Please check out the OP. There is a handful of useful video and text tutorial links there. Cheers.

Oops. Thanks!

Edit: So I had a go in the Su-25T after watching a couple of tutorials on the cold start procedure, I was a little underwhelmed! I thought it was going to be some massive list of inputs, but no; switch the thing on, start engine 1, start engine 2, close the canopy and you're basically set. Fortunately it's great fun actually flying the thing after you've got it in the air and there's a lot more to learn when you're off the ground so I look forward to getting stuck in to all that. My first landing was a little rough too, I hadn't yet learned how to set the flaps in the landing position, didn't know what the wheel brake key was and landed quite hard going far too fast (though I had at least spotted the air brake key bind during a quick scan of the mappings), bent my left rear strut, drove along and then off the runway, went sideways, caught fire, ejected... Well, this is the result:

I watched a start procedure video on the KA-50 afterwards and that's more like what I was expecting; switch it on, start the fuel pumps, start this, start that, start everything else, stop that, ensure kitchen sink is plugged and the taps are off and away you go.

Side note: Can anyone tell me how to switch that top right HUD element off? I think I discovered how to make it appear months ago, thought it was useful, left it on and now I've forgotten what it's called, how to toggle it and I want to remove it for screenshots and videos. Any ideas please? I don't think it's covered in the OP this time.

That is called "Game Avionics Mode" This mode can be selected from the Gameplay Options tab or by setting the Game Presets to Game.

Edit: Landing flaps are: "LShift F", retracting landing flaps one notch: "F", retracting landing flaps completely: "LCtrl F". Wheel brake is "W"

geuss ill give it another try, gonna remap the thing to a key i dont use. Tried starting in flight, got a lot of beeps, did some spinny flips then crash landed into a huey. at least i landed.

For the people that are having trouble, have you not done the tutorials in single player? They are very extensive!

If people want to practice, there are a few helpful options in the mission editor. Place your plane on the map (you can start in the air, on the runway, parked with engines on, or parked with engines off). Set the pilot to player.

Mission options should be at the top of the ME, select this. A panel on the right will appear. Activate and select (there are two checkboxes on either side of all the options, check both) immortal, unlimited ammo, unlimited fuel, and permit crash recovery.

You will now be able to fly indefinitely without fear of crashing or depleting resources. You can make attack runs on buildings, just fly around, or practice takeoff/landing over and over. One tip though, with infinite fuel and weapons, your plane will be very heavy at maximum load out. You can reduce your fuel load to cut down on weight, it will still be infinite as long as the % amount of fuel is 1 or more.

Last time I checked I'm pretty sure there weren't any interactive tutorials, just videos that went on and on about the HUD and other systems - for the Su-25T only, with downloadable videos for everything else (I hope I'm not getting mixed up with something else or making it up entirely, my memory isn't great) - without really explaining anything. That was long before the Steam version was released, but I found the interactive tutorials just after I tried flying after watching some videos on YouTube.

Great, thanks!

Having it quite hard to take part in any event (College admission, new job, new Ace Combat and Watch Dogs taking all my time and mind).

Any of you planning a join event on Sunday/Saturday?

I want to make a few missions for it with the missions editor, but as I stated before my hands are full, but seeing what you could see in the game it would be nice to have a couple of fighters, bombers and multirole aircraft taking part in a combat scenario would be pretty cool for an online event.

Still to learn the procedures for guided missiles in the Su-25 though.

I have the non Steam version. When I fire up DCS single player I have options for Missions, Custom, etc, and Tutorials. They are very in-depth.

Yeah, I'm just saying that before there was a Steam version, I looked at the tutorials bit and it was just videos. I think they added them relatively recently, I'm sure they haven't always been there because I remember looking for them a while ago. I could, of course, be unknowingly making this up.

I'm having problems with some servers. It's become practically impossible to join the 104th server. I keep getting "Connection Interrupted". I'm really stumped. (Network mode set to LAN).

What is this "thing" you are trying to remap?
I don't know, haven't been on it in a while but when I do the in game tutorial there is a part where you have to press the home key, I think its one of the engines. This is on the SU-25T

Yeah that's engines. What kind of keyboard do you use and do you really need that one?

Then we all became friends*

*I jumped the takeoff because my brakes magically let go under full thrust. Then the other guy in front of Eric didn't move. Then my buddy in the Mig took off much earlier than I did and flew above me to avoid wreckage. Then I didn't see my buddy above me, so I lifted off and flew into him. We crashed.

Random bit of awesomeness a few seconds before the server restarted.
