All right gearheads, so, we have different types of wheel setups : gears, belts, direct-drive, all with their pros and cons (price, accuracy, feel, rigidity, maintenance, ect...). AFAIK, the gear-based wheels use worm gears, and other standard gearing arrangements.
I was wondering if anyone thought about doing either Internal / planetary gearing system.
The advantages, I think, would be rigidity (potentially), size reduction, and compared to standard gears, a bigger, more consistent area of contact (less slop), more stable (for a planetary system, where the wheel and motor axis would be aligned). I guess it would be relatively expensive (lots of precise gears), but as a force multiplication system, could have benefits as well.
