Playing by "The Rules"

I was always dissapointed that you could enter any car into the special challenges in GT2. I generally try to stay with the theme of the race and run what the AI is running; it makes closer races and better replays.

I've been thinking of writing up a little list of my 'approved' cars for each challenge. Would this interest anyone?

Some times, you just get so darn bored of the AI, that you have to beat it not-so-fair and square. Other times, I feel the AI isn't serving up skills enough against cars that are in my garage. It's hard to race a car with say, 350-400hp against decent competition. Either you're beating the AI soundly, or you're getting left behind.

But in some races, you have to handicap yourself in order to make it close. Switching to normal tires, or removing the turbo, or using a very underpowered car. Usually, I try to race at 40%-60% the posted hp limit. I don't follow the National races to the letter, I sort of wished the game was more restrictive on it's definition of "Historic", "Tuned Turbo", etc.

Thos ethat get bored with GT2 probably don't care, but those who continue to play it will make our own rules...problem solved!

Sometimes, I get so friggin frustrated at the stupidity of the AI as they slam into my car and land me a last place, that I take a really overpowered car and just extinguish the competition.....

Are you talking about how you can enter Lotus Espirits into the Luxury 4 door cup, and hulking wagons into compact car tournaments? There is no need to try to draw up an official list, people know when they are entering cars that are not supposed to be in certain races, they just go into temporary denial so they can win the races.

Yeah, this is what I'm talking about. I think it's obvious for most cars/people what's "right" and 'Wrong". But there are some cars, like targas, which could be 'allowed' in the convertible race, and many people don't know the definition of a Grand Touring or Touring car.

I might do this just for my own amusement, though.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I wanted to ask if you thought it was OK to enter rally cars in road races. I know the game will let you, but I'm not sure if it is what you would call an 'approved' car, as B Campbell said.

i tried to stick to the rules but gave up on the GT league nationals were you need a car from each country within the power limit.

any i play GT3 know and try to 100% that aswell :)

I was once involved in a "Production Class" racing series where one of the competitors used parts from many different model vehicles of different production years, claiming to the rules commitee that they were all simply model variants. The commitee agreed and his hybrid was deemed a production vehicle.

More than once I've raced in GT2's '80s Sports Car Cup against AI cars that turned out to be '91 models. Given that one of my favorite cars is a '92 Mazda Protoge GT-X, and that this car is a variant of the '89 model, what are your thoughts on using this car in this series - especially in light of GT2's apparent tendency to use 'model variants' against me in this very series?

I am presently attempting to see how far I can get in GT2 without purchasing a single car. I'm also trying to only race cars that 'fit' the proposed races, and, as you might guess, I'm starting to run out of prize cars that are applicable for the available races.

I wouldn't mind seeing some definitions for the various car types. For instance, what exactly is a "Historic" car, anyway? Some of the cars that GT2 fields in that series are pretty borderline, if you ask me (a '60s Skyline is 'historic'?!? I can think of many other, much more worthy, contenders.). And are the only cars that are appropriate to race in the "Muscle Car" series late-'60s/early '70s vehicles with over 300HP? What about newer cars with a lot of ponies under the hood?

And this is just the start. There are many other classifications that are quite subjective...

try this if you think your good enough ok take the escudo to the "all stars" races then race red rock valley and try to lap the competition . I can do it every time my best laps are 52 sec with a good time being 4:41

We don't need no stinkin' rules. GT 2 will at times cheat you if it thinks your %ages are too high. For instance, Go to Historic Car cup. It is a 295 hp race. The AI often brings a Road GT 40 to the party. If I am having an exceptional day, and my skilz are spot on I can beat it by about a half second with the RX 7 GT-C.
My position on playing by the rules. IF the game is gonna cheat. I will run at the absolute hp limit I am allowed. I may have the advantage, but I may also be "tilting at windmills" in some of the series.

That GT40 really is annoying. To race against and to drive. Aaargh!
Back to my question: Do you think its OK to use rally cars in road races?

If you can get them to run well on the street. My problem is that on the street the rally cars understeer big time. Enough that I don't want to spend the time to make them street ready. I don't keep a notebook of settings for each venue so it would be a bloody hassle to set up for each race. In GT (which has no rallies) and GT3 You can save your settings so that would be a different story. That's the only thing keeping my rally cars off the street.
If you want an interesting rally challenge get Colin Mc Rae Rally. It is very cool and the cars show damage, etc.

as long as my car can enter, i enter.

i even beat the GT 500's with my RSubaru Impreza WRX STi Version VI with 490hp. But you know, they're right hehind me.

i Drive at my full potential. I relate real life driving to the game such as suspension tuning, tire choice, driving techniques, etc.

When I first started, I was tempted to cheat, but could'nt afford to. Now, I could cheat if I wanted, but I do'nt need to. So, for one reason or another, I,ve always played fair.

Unless using the AI cars to take turns realy fast is considered cheating. :D

Yeah But I brought a bigger GT40 to the party. I had one with about 600hp. HE!HE! ;) ;)

How???
For this race you are not allowed to exceed 295 HP.

Strange, nobody suggested using only cars you see in the replays.

(Although that leads to the "Ford Taurus is a luxury car?" discussion).

when I first got Gt2 I could care less about the unofficial "rules". I rember entering a Corvette in the Station Wagon Series, for instance :yuck: But it didn't take long for me to realize how boring this makes the game; hence I soon was following the rules again and again.

The one ones I don't follow to a tee are the GT National & Regionals. I don't see what the big deal is entering a Japanese car in one of the European races, for instance...so long as I keep power & parts restricted. That's just me I guess.

Those that get bored with GT2 probably don't care, but those who continue to play it will make our own rules...problem solved!

That's what I wound up doing.

You do relize that you brought up a 5 year old thread? :sly:

Sportwagon did. I don't see the harm as long as the topic is still open for discussion. I think the admins would rather see us rehash an old thread rather than start a new one and waste more server memory.

Yes it is 5 years old but the question still remains: what would the admins rather us do? Start a new thread that has undoubtably been discussed before or resurrect an old one? I'd rather get an old one up...it's neat seeing people's opinions from back then when GT2 was newer and GT3 had only been released recently. Whatever.
