I'm suprised that there isn't a thread on this yet.

It seems that a plot to blow up 3 flights from the UK to US has been averted. However, both the UK and US remain on Highest alert. Heathrow has closed to all flights not allready in the air, and many airports around the country have cancelled flights.

I also heard that the US are not permitting any flights from the UK.

Yeah, i heard something about them being on terror-alert on the radio...

Didn't know there was anything planned - from here it just sounded as though they had a suspicion :nervous:

As we get more and more paranoid, and we take more of the liberties away from people there will be less and less travel. Why build a new airport?

I'll happily leave my carry-on off, if the airport can guarantee I'll have my luggage when I arrive.

I'm still waiting for the first suicide bomber to attack the US. Then we'll see how tight security gets.

If that ever happens, I think I can kiss my ammo making days good-bye.

Oh yeah, iPods and laptops have been banned temporarily on flights.

Which means I can still bring my iRiver :P

You also cannot bring hair care products, gels, hand lotion, shampoo, etc. because the bombers were going to use liquid explosives.

Well, you can, you just have to taste it first.

Oh wait, that's baby formula.

Department for Transport say:

DfT
Following this morning's police action, security at all UK airports has been increased and additional security measures have been put in place for all flights.

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage must be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:
  • pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags));
  • travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
  • prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
  • spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
  • contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
  • for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
  • female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
  • tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
  • keys (but no electrical key fobs)

All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

There are no changes to current hold baggage security measures.

Regrettably, significant delays at airports are inevitable. Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.

These additional security measures will make travel more difficult for passengers, particularly at such a busy time of the year. But they are necessary and will continue to keep flights from UK airports properly secure. We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the Government, will need to be in place for a limited period only. In light of the threat to aviation and the need to respond to it, we are asking the travelling public to be patient and understanding and to cooperate fully with airport security staff and the police.

If passengers have any questions on their travel arrangements or security in place at airports they should contact their airline or carrier.

Hair spray is actually highly flammable. My brother used it as the accelerant in a potato gun.

I find it a little funny that the UK actually does a search and bam, finds bombs. Really makes me wonder how good are our airport security was in the US in 2001.

Anyways, quite an ordeal, but no complaints. If my fellow passengers have to be checked everywhere for bombs, so be it.

Pilots should most definately have weapons. Their responsibility is the peoples safety, also have a security guard with an ak47.

That's daft. Then the terrorists wouldn't even need to bother to bring their own. They'll just be able to steal the pilot's gun or the guard's gun.

Chuck Norris should be on every plane.

We'd have to successfully clone him first.

We don't have to clone him. He can do that himself.

Budget airlines can get Jean Claude van Damme.

I am flying from Hamburg, Germany to New York tomorrow.
With Continental Airlines.

So my lfight is not cancelled yet and I hope it wont.

not allowed to take liquids, great! But thisis just a small problem isnt it?

Evidently the people arrested have been suspected for a long time and have been stopped now because they decided to put their plan into action...kudo's to the UK .

Why an AK47?

Who the hell uses AK47s? Terrorists have more advanced weponry than the AK47 already!

And why the hell should pilots be armed? What makes pilots qualified marmksmen? If a single bullet goes through the fuselage of an aircraft the cabin is depressurised everyone inside dies, understand?

If anyone is armed on a plane they should be excellent marksmen and they should be armed with very precise and rather low power weapons, NOT AK47S!!!

Explosive decompression = emergency descent to 10,000 feet. No-one dies, though it's a bit hairy. Not a good situation - and a good argument against weapons on planes.

I am all for locked cockpit doors and pilots trained and armed with a handgun.

I do think an automatic weapon may be a bit overboard.

Tazers would do the job.

Pretty much my thoughts. Have one of those guns that shoots a tazer 15-20 ft. on a wire and brings any conceited bastard stupid enough to mess with you on his knees and keeps him there.

News @ 10 just did quite a comprehensive coverage of it.

I felt pretty pissed off watching it as all we seem to get these days is terrorist attacks and that makes me feel threatened which to be fair i shouldn't ever be forced to feel.

I did like the BBC's short interview with some guy demonstrating liquid explosives. He reminded me of the fella @ the Box O Truth.

Oh and i believe you can used low-velocity ammo on aircraft (i.e. a shot on a target shouldn't exit with enough pace to cause enough damage to the plane), but the idea of any guns on planes is bad regardless of ammo type.

We had 30 years of this from the IRA. It's nothing new. To be honest, I'm soooooo much more worried about why my last fart smelled so bad than I am about Al Qai'da.

I said something along similar lines on July 7th last year - and let's face it, since then we've had over half a trillion man hours without them harming anyone at all.

Britain isn't scared of you, Al. You barely even register as an itch.

Good point, I assumed that the passangers would be sucked out and the aircraft ripped appart before the pressure equalised.
