This is a bit of an old subject, but I was just thinking about it. And I have some opinions on the subject that I havent expressed to people. Atleast to people that might care. My family is always complaining becuase I always b!tch about stuff like this.
Anyways, this show was great. On the other late night shows guests always just came on to whore out their new movies, with nothing much else to say. Just some funny stories or things here and there to entertain the audience and viewers into watching. On PI people came on to talk about real issues. Even if i didnt always agree with the opinions of people, it was good to actually see some of these things discussed. I could also see which celebrities where really dirt dumb and whos opinion's were easily influenced by the media. (IMO, caused by weak mindedness)
This show was cancelled a while back, and I think we all know why. Bill had a problem with everyone referring to terrorists and more specifically the 9/11 highjackers as cowards. Bill stated his opinion, like he has many many times before. (The show is called what it is for a reason BTW.) He said something to the effect of "Anyone willing to die horribly for any cause is definately not a coward." He then went on to say something like "Propelling missiles from a safe compound 20,000 miles away is cowardly." ABC apparently had a problem with this. His show was off the air a few weeks later and replaced by a latenight news show.
I think this was a mistake.
I have always had the idea that coward meant "afraid of something". "brave" could be thought as the opposite of that. If this was the case, Bill's opinions shouldnt be considered wrong. And he definately didnt deserve the consequences brought on by ABC. I think censorship is present in this country. Not by the government, but within everything else. Censorship would be understandable if Bill's statements were very wrong and offensive, but I dont think they were. I think the initial "talking ourselves up, talking terrorists down" (hero vs. cowards) by the media after 9/11 caused his statements to be offensive to some. If general opinion wasnt so easily swayed by the media then this wouldnt have been a problem. Many other problems would be gone or smaller as well.
I dont really agree that USA military men and women should be considered cowards. (killing from a safe shelter afar definately takes less guts than suicide, but doing something that takes less guts does not define a coward). But I think for the highjackers to do what they did, it required them to be brave. As wrong as this may sound, and as much as US politicians and media people want us to believe they were cowards, i hold my opinion.
I think many people who use the term coward dont know the real meaning. I think coward is used too often to describe people who do something bad to our people. Its easy to use the word coward to describe someone we want to insult, but i think other words could be used.
Some people have told me they were cowards because they didnt want to deal with the problems they faced, instead they chose suicide. But whether you agree with what they did or not, killing thousands is definately doing something. Suicide was just a requirement of the plan they chose (again, out of context of killing innocent thousands, a brilliant plan).
I could also say that the actual highjackers were pawns in the hands of the people who planned the attack. (I cant remember if our government found out who did the planning for the specific attack. I thought I heard each cell of Al Queda planned their own attacks. Bin Laden just encouraged and tought people how to plan their own terror projects.) In this case the highjackers were brave to sacrifice their lives for the plan. Then the planners would be the cowards because they didnt go themselves. But then again, Im sure there is rank in their organization. Maybe the planners were more valuable to Al Queda. In that case they were doing their job (which could be considered cowardly because they didnt face up to the problems they faced, they instead chose to kill thousands. But again, I could say killing thousands is doing something [maybe not right, but still something]. And Im sure attacking the USA would be a better way to get attention than by saying "Hello mr. bush, please pay attention to us, we hate you because of this, change your ways to please us or we must attack." [But then again, that wouldnt get bush's attention any better than they did this way. It just caused Bush to stop them by dismantling networks, rather than figuring out why we are hated so much.] Therefor there is no way to really get the attention of a country to change their ways. I dont even know if that is possible. In the case of this attack, it was the only plan of action they could take [Besides doing nothing, which may be better than killing thousands in your opinion, but put yourself in their shoes.]
That whole messy thing was just me trying to prove why the attackers couldnt be considered cowards. This is kind of the base of my whole opinion that Bill's show shouldnt have been cancelled. I tried to organize it as much as possible (while organizing my thoughts as well [I usually confuse myself. Im not very good at writing down my thoughts, but it helps me organize them.]).
I am kind of sticking my neck out by stating my true opinion on such politically incorrect things. So please try not to crucify me. Also, if you are dumb, or not up for understanding what I mean, please dont comment. Im looking for only intelligent responses. Discussions can get messy when people post stupid crap.
Comment on what you thought about the show. What you thought about it getting cancelled. Cencorship. Or what you think about terrorists being considered cowards. Or anything else that would not veer us too far off topic.
Also, this thread is about a TV show, but it contains a more political focus, and has to do with opinions. Threads in TV & Movies usually have a less serious tone. I think it will catch the eye of the people that would be interested in a topic like this in the Opinions forum. Move it to TV & Movies if you must, but I think it is better fit here.
