The greatest guitarist in history. Not just my opinion, also that of many in the music industry; he's number 1 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists for example. As Jimmy Castor (of "Troglodyte" and Bertha Butt fame) said, "He did things on the guitar that people are still trying to do today, y'know... He was a genius of some sort, there's no question about it."

I didn't get to Woodstock, but I did see him perform at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. An incredible artist, and an incredible performer.

Hall of Famer, unquestionably.

The guy played the guitar like no one before him and hardly anyone after. Playing lefty on an upside-down right-handed guitar earns him some major kudos.

Hendrix was amazing. He could make a guitar sing in unholy ways...

Most any competent guitarist can do the deedle-deedle-dee, but Hendrix inspired a whole generation of guitarists to goo deedle-deedle-WAAAAAAAH-qwa-qwa-wrooooowww...

Doesn't get much better than that, man. Respect the classics. :D

How is Voodoo Child not in the OP? :odd: :P

Heh, the same could be said for "Foxey Lady" or "Purple Haze" or "All Along the Watchtower" (his only Top 40 hit, surprisingly enough) or... you get the idea. Only so much room.

I think the drug problems tarnish the reputation of an otherwise brilliant musician. I know while creditgrinding this morning I had him playing "Stone Free" in the background while I was racing...but the fact is, he did things in 1969 that still sound fresh today. I swear, the first time I heard him, I thought late '70s, at least.

HoF. Whoever voted otherwise, show yourself now and tell us why you don't think he's a legend.

Hall of Fame, and Hendrix deserves a special spot on there. He should be in the hall of fame of the hall of famers. No other guitarrist did more to the music than him. The guy was a myth.

Hmm.. overrated in what sense?

When the name becomes bigger then the music.

If Hendrix and Matt Pike were to write the same exact album, Hendrix would likely get much better reviews because he.. is well Jimi Hendrix.

No other guitarrist did more to the music than him.

Tony Iommi.

With that said, HoF. While I'm not very fond of most of his music. He at least wasn't boring, he did write some killer riffs.

Tony Iommi.

Is one of my heroes, his story alone would encourage anyone to take on a musical career, however as you said, Hendrix's name is perhaps bigger than his own music, and that makes him deserving of a special spot in the HoF.

No, that just makes him overrated. The same sense every HoF artist is.

Over-rated is a matter of perspective. Over-rated by whom? If even the pros can agree that someone is one of the top ten of all time, then there's got to be something to the legend.

And Hendrix wouldn't make the same kind of album as Matt Pike, or Tommi Iommi. Different times, different backgrounds, different personalities. Hard to separate the artist from his milieu... and once Hendrix had stamped the scene with his contribution to music, it influenced much of what came after him... which means that what the others do and did with their music may have been quite different if Hendrix had never been, whether or not he was a direct influence.

I'm going to toss something out here about J. Hendrix.

I voted HOF as a lot of you have.I love this mans music.BUT ..... do we dare call him a "One Hit Wonder" ? Although a lot of his music was great and he had major influence on today's artists,he never really cracked the top 40 but once. The song,"All Along the Watchtower" (A Bob Dylan song by the way) was his biggie, nothing really else topped out,at least here in the states.

So let's hear your thoughts,is Jimi a "One hit Wonder" ?

This is an interesting article.

No, he's not, because there are most people can name more than 1 song. Dream Theatre only had one hit, and they're not one hit wonders. DT named a compilation Greatest hit... And 21 other pretty cool songs :P no joke either

I suppose I'll follow up on why I find Jimi Hendrix a bit over-rated.

I do believe that he is an excellent guitarist and song writer, which is why I voted Hall of Fame. But from what I've heard from Hendrix, none of it has really come across as mind blowing or anything. Sure it's very good, but it doesn't lead me to proclaim Hendrix as the greatest guitarist of all time, as many people do. Personally I don't see how he could be rated higher than say Van Halen or Satriani or a Page.

But this of course is my humble opinion.:)

That's probably a result of the popularity that Hendrix has gained in the years following his death. Ask someone forty years ago to name more than one Hendrix song, and they would be hard pressed to more than just Watchtower, if that. Look at Vincent Van Gogh. He's regarded today as one of the greatest artists of all time, yet during his life people wouldn't give him the time of day, much less buy one of his works.
