Initial reaction was 4/5, but after thinking about it I'd say it's 3/5. It's better than average, but not 'very good'.

Overall I just don't think it's adds enough to be worthy of being called spec II.

New track: fun, but more of a novelty. It'll add a little spice to the line up, but not be a core track.

Sophy: Still just a novelty.

Weekly single player races: not sure I'll even do them most of the time. The fundamental issue is single player racing in this game is just not good due to bad ai and the chase the rabbit setup. Good feature though, but something like it really should have been there since launch. Same with event directory.

Economy: I guess it's a little better now that you can do custom races for decent money, but as long as single player racing is as bad as it is, I just don't want to grind the credits needed to buy the 20m cars anyway.

Master license: best part of the update for me. Until single player racing gets better I feel gran Turismo single player is best suited for this kind of thing - experiencing different cars and tracks, with a solid feeling of progression and challenge underlying it. Racing you go online for, but that needs a spec II too.

GT7 is the best car game out there in my opinion, but it still doesn't make the most of its potential, which is frustrating. Don't think we'll see much change going forward so crossing my fingers Gt8 will build upon this foundation.

3 out of 5
Great that payouts are improved šŸŽ®šŸ˜ŽšŸ‘
Finally MB 190E and a modern Dodge Challenger... sweet music of the LFA šŸ‘Œ
Don't care about a fictional snow track until more trucks are added (Ram? Titan? Silverado? New Raptor?) šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
Underwhelmed by Sophy 2.0... need the ability to turn up the challenge and/or select the cars/tune/tires the AI use.. a la custom races :indiff:

Need more real world tracks! (COTA, Sebring, Canadian Tire, etc.)
Fix rolling starts to double file like in real life
More modern IMSA Prototypes, GT3/Touring Series cars, etc.
And for the love of all things racing, port to PC

I donā€™t venture much beyond Custom Races. So, from my point of view, the amount of content added & renewed from this update, itā€™s bordering on lots to do like in Project Cars 2.

It's clear the console is what's holding things back... while it looks good on my PS5, would love my gaming rig to take a stab at running more than 19 AI cars, RT on track, easier Adobe Illustrator scalable fonts/decals/etc. importing, 120 fps without the washed out look, etc.

Right...except that's not the problem.

The recent update was great and has me all the way back into the game. It would be absolutely perfect for me with more tuner cars, point to point courses, more street circuits and - I already know this will never happen - some time attack-inspired modification options, like more engine swaps, drivetrain swaps, aspiration swaps, more extreme aero, etc. and some legendary time attack cars like the SBR Chrono, Gobstopper III, HKS TRB-01/2/3, Garage Escort Evo... I guess the Porsche 919 Evo would count too.

Add all that and I'll never need another racing game.

I'd love to run GT7 on my 3Ghz i7 and RTX 3050 but let's be realistic, GT has always been a console game and expecting that to change is very unlikely.

Yes and when we all get quantum computing consoles or PCs we won't be limited until the we will be forever limited by the consoles the games are designed for...

It's a 3. More content is good, but no road course is a disappointment.

What is very disappointing is PD only implementing Sophy on selected tracks, and hobbling it by essentially overlaying the racecraft on the existing slow, rubber banded AI.

This update hits most of the marks but misses a few key ones to me. Like the post above, removing the invite system would've made it higher scoring, as would the ability to sell tuning parts and a quick-change car option for GT Auto and the Tuning Shop.

If they'd done those 3 things on top of all else it would've scored easily a 5/5 for me, but hey, a 4/5 is still a very nice score and it's still a very nice update with some much-needed features and QoL improvements.
Yeah, itā€™s funny they added the car change option in the circuits overview screens, but not in the tuning shop and GT autoā€¦ Itā€™s like if the developers donā€™t know their own gameā€¦

I still feel like being a beginner in GT, even though Iā€™ve already spent almost 190 hours playing it. šŸ™ˆ But for a Porsche fanboy like me, this update was quite nice. Any update with a new Porsche is great. šŸ˜‰

In all seriousness, I have tried Sophy on the Le Mans quick race and was initially underwhelmed. I will try it out on more tracks and with different cars and difficulty settings, because I really like the idea of getting a more ā€œintelligentā€ AI in the game. So that gets the benefit of the doubt. And Iā€™m sure Sophy will come to more tracks and races with every update going forward.

Also, small things like the circuits progress overview and car change option are really nice and improve the overall experience significantly.

But as has been written before in this thread, I really donā€™t care about a snow track. I hated the dirt tracks already and have zero interest in that kind of sim racing at allā€¦ Iā€™d also rather have some proper 1 hour races with day and night settings at Le Mans and others, with decent payout, obviously.

My main joy was the updated offline multiplayer mode. I canā€™t be bothered with online racing, because Iā€™m not throwing more money at Sony for their PS+ crap. And the two player split screen mode was essentially useless. This is now finally something that lets me play GT with friends together at my place, which Iā€™m really looking forward to.

My considered opinion can best be expressed as an imagined conversation between the Captain and First Officer on the Titanic.

Captain: I see youā€™ve rearranged the deckchairs as I suggested
FO: Yesā€¦but itā€™s better than that
C: How so?
FO: We made some new ones too!
C: where did you get the materials to do that?
FO: We chopped up a few of the lifeboats.

I hope weakly challanges get expanded to more than 5 races in future, its still very good we have something to aim for every week through, the payout in custom races along with weakly challanges is the best part of the update, the cars was the best selection yet in an update, and man the demon lfa and 992 gt3 rs pd manage to nail the sound on those,
I think the snow track makes for great varity,
This update is 4,5/5 for me very well worth spec ll name in the update

I would have given 5/5 if it was a proper tarmac surface circuit rather than the Snow one we got. The rest was great and I can see how effective Sophy will be given time. Its a good start.

Sophy: Still just a novelty.

Weekly single player races: The fundamental issue is single player racing in this game is just not good due to bad ai
These two points seem at odds. How is Sophy a novelty and yet the solution to your main gripe with the single player elements?

OK, not in the implementation it currently has been deployed in, but still, it's an iterative process that they cannot just roll out across all events in one big bang...

I think it's nice update, love sophy, love the cars, and love the new races and new track, not al rally fan but i'm having a sideways blast!, the menubook and the pepper races were nice.
I had so much fun with the Redbull Nations cup, fast, focus and fun.
The licence thing is ok, but expected a little more out of it.

The only downside on all this is that i'm already completed it,

Yeah you answered your own question I guess.

Sophy isn't implemented in the weekly races. So I have no interest in doing those races and do the whole chase the rabbit thing against dumb AI.

I guess I wasn't clear, but I'm not against Sophy, but it's current implementation is just a novelty cause it's so limited. Not to mention it's still manipulated by rubber banding. But yeah maybe long term Sophy will be the solution to crappy single player. But other games already have better ai already, so still not a good excuse that they need more time. Single player racing in this game isnt good, and this update didn't change that.

Here's my take:

Gran Turismo 7 is like a steakhouse that wants to be a five-star restaurant but is only a four-star at best . . . perhaps only a three-star. The salads are ok, but boring. There are a limited number of appetizers and the menu has at times a limited variety. The staff is welcoming but they donā€™t communicate as often as a five-star experience should. Thatā€™s why Gran Turismo 7 ā€“ while praised ā€“ is continually criticized for what itā€™s missing.

Along comes a new restaurant that has more options, friendlier staff, lots of appetizers and a bevy of salad options.

Thereā€™s only one issue here. The new restaurant is an Olive Garden.

This is Forza Motorsport.

Thereā€™s nothing wrong with Olive Garden. I just donā€™t confuse it with a steakhouse. And I love the stakehouse called Gran Turismo 7.

Check SuperGTā€™s review on YouTube to see what I mean.

Granted, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Hereā€™s my take in a nutshell.

When FM8 came out I made an analogy quoted above. To continue that analogy, hereā€™s what happened:

People went to Olive Garden, discovered it was in fact not a steakhouse and that it had a few issues. The atmosphere wasnā€™t as nice, the bar produced a rough-and-tumble feeling for everyone, the place was a bit loud . . . more like a sports bar . . . that kind of thing. The food was good, portions were large and overall, Olive Garden was a fine place to eat.

Still, it was no steakhouse.

Just a few weeks or so after Olive Garden debuted, the steakhouse revealed a revamped menu.

They didnā€™t make any changes to the bar area, but they focused more on the ā€œsit-downā€ dining experience. There were more options for small parties. They introduced a new weekly special list of entrees. They doubled their licensed specialties ā€“ a welcome addition ā€“ for those who wanted something with just a touch more spice. Additionally, they brought in a new chef who was the understudy to the original Five Star chef known as Sophy and while this new Sophy is not as exacting as the original, itā€™s easily a better cook than the current or previous kitchen staff at the steakhouse - Five-Star Sophy excluded of course. They even offered frozen treats for those who enjoy them.

This is by no means a perfect restaurant; no place is. I would love to have the ability to create my own entrĆ©e ā€“ sort of a chef special if you will. Iā€™d like to see even more cuts of beef available. Thereā€™s a list of wants I have.

However, there is little doubt that Gran Turismo has raised their establishment by at least one star.

And itā€™s still a steakhouse. Unlike Olive Garden.

TL;DR version ā€“ great update 5/5. Just because I want more does not mean the update isnā€™t 5/5.

Im so glad to hear for updates to single player earning power and that the lfa has been released. Couldnā€™t care less about any of these things but Iā€™ll be grateful if I could never read about them again.

However, no race track, no race cars, no vr updates and basically for the third update in a row..nothing iā€™ll use, or affects me. Which is fine. Im happy learning in sport mode. Although more tracks in those rotations would be cool. I hadnā€™t played gt in a decade+ prior to feb 28th of last year and despite that, the weekly rotations are feeling a little repetitive.

Its great to see another iteration of sophy. Watching it grow will always be fascinating. However, 3 lap races just arenā€™t enough to really settle in and get a feel for how she behaves. Heck, most of the time I just settle in by the end of lap 2. I wonder why the sophy people prefer these super short races..oh well. Its just good to see it again and that it keeps growing at good intervals.

Again, nothing wrong with the update. Just not really relevant to my play. Least it was better than the last which has destroyed balance in the gr4ā€™s.

I like the update. It brought me back into the single player gain as the dashboard motivated me to complete the parts I had not done - made it easier to find them as well.

I did not give a 5 though as I wish there were more enhancements to the Sport mode such as a race series where you qualify pre-race in the car you are actually racing, rather than grinding QT in a meta car before switching to something else. I think this is much needed.

Genuinely, what I like most about update 1.40 is that PD are listening to feedback and criticisms from the fans and doing their best to make changes where needed. Had the game released in this state, I doubt it would have had anywhere near the level of criticism it had at release (okay.. so the anger over focus on paid credits was still warranted) but overall this update has incentivised me to 100% the game whereas a few months I wasn't that bothered and saw it as a time killer game.

It's a positive update and a step in the right direction.

Very well saidšŸ‘

I still contend we need legacy circuits in all their glory. The update was solid though. It felt like someone at PD actually spent 30 seconds thinking about what most players want.

I donā€™t think anybody ā€œprefersā€ the short Sophy races. But itā€™s what the general public got at this point, so weā€™re trying to make the best of it and hope for more tracks and races coming very soon. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

4/5

I have been enjoying v1.40 so far, with the new Master Licences and addition of Weekly Challenges being the main draw.

The cars have been more enjoyable than I expected but they won't have the long-term appeal that race cars bring me.

Seeing Sophy arrive in a larger role is a nice addition but only have it on a limited number of circuits is a disappointment. GT8 will be the fully fledged version one assumes.
