first thread, first post. hey all... im an avid car guy (i own and regularly abuse my 300 whp 02 wrx), and really enjoy the realism of GT3. anyway, im wondering how many of you use an aftermarket wheel vs the "stock" ps2 controller? i guess what im getting at here, is would buying a wheel be worth it? how much better is it? feel free to point me in the right direction, flames and all. i can take it.

Welcome, wrex.

In my opinion, the wheel is very worth it. You'll never use a "pad" again. I used the stock pads, a couple of "racing" pads, a couple of "trigger" type handheld wheels, but the wheel is the best. You can't beat force feedback. You may want to look into some sort of stand or cockpit as well, though. Lots of good info on that stuff in this thread .

Well, if you mean right this minute, I'd have to answer that I use the "stock" controller (usually referred to as just "DS2", DualShock2, which is much easier to type).

However, if you ask me again a week from now, I'll have to answer DFP. :D

So far the stock DS2 has done me good and no bad has come from it.Although you could say my decision is a little biased considering I don't have a wheel and will probably not get one due to its price.

Because it is the GT3 thread: stock controller

But

If it was general: DFP all the way! Actually I am at Prologue right now, the wheel is waiting but had to eat something :)

Hasn't this been discussed before?

Anyways I use the DS 2 (never lets me down) I would invest in a DF P wheel, but it's not really high on my agenda. There's MGS 3, AC 5 and of coarse GT 4 to be purchased.

i prefer the regular controller....i tried my friend's momo wheel and pedals (the feeling was real), but it was hard to get used to

It's well worth the $$ to get a wheel. It makes it much more realistic, and fun. Although I would caution you against getting anything from MadCatz. I got mine 2 years ago and it's been troubling me for the the past year. Breaks too often.

DFP wheel all the way! It does take some getting used to (just like the controller did when you first started playing the game) but once you do get used to it, it's the most fun I've had playing a videogame.

bump from the dead!
i finally ponied up and bought a DFP wheel, almost 3 years after starting this thread!! i had forgotten i signed up for this forum!
i'm back into gt (4 now), and have been practicing my driving a lot in the last week or two. . . maybe i'll even drop a couple drift video clips on all ya'll in the near future :D
OT: can somebody point me in the direction of a good time attack thread? i'd like to see where i stand.

Yes, it has. A search would have turned up several threads.

I got all golds and 100% in GT3 using a DS2 controller. I did own a Momo wheel for a while, but I never set it up in a comfortable and sturdy place, and so it was never fun to drive. I gave up after about 4-6 hours of driving, and eventually sold it. For GT4, however, I think that a wheel is a necessity - with a controller it's just too hard to steer lightly enough to avoid massive understeer in GT4.

I'd suggest you buy a wheel because the game is much more fun with it. But if you do, you MUST have something sturdier and more comfortable to put it on than one of this little folding TV dinner tables.

Stock PS2 dual-shock controller for me. I bought a Mad Katz controller once but I thrashed it within a couple months....one of the analog sticks got messed up and basically I just find the good old Sony dual-shock is just best & most durable.

Bought a wheel a few months back, I got the buttons set-up but I had such a hard time controlling my cars. I started with the simplest track..Super Speedway. I'd turn the wheel just the smallest bit and my damn car would weave back and forth..I couldn't control it. Then it would start going into a spin! I'd try and correct and now it would be spinning the other way! :scared:

But whatever I bought was a cheapie wheel. I forget how much...no less than $30, no more than $70. I just cant afford one of the better wheels, but I do okay driving with a dual-shock.
