Porsche 911 GT3 (991) Announced!

Makes the reports of a GT2 likely not coming even more convincing.

I'm glad you said this because I was going to. Since the GT2 RS is basically said to be no more due to it not having a reason to exist and just being in it's own class out there in limbo.

Maybe:

* 991 GT3 RS > 1 turbo?

* 991 GT2 RS > 2 turbos?

The problem is as McLaren said earlier in this thread and auto journos as well. Porsche don't plan nor seem interested in bring back the GT2 especially the RS variant.

If I remember correctly, the reason was because Porsche felt the performance they achieved with the Turbo 991 was more than sufficient enough for where they wanted it. A GT2 would probably be overkill, and would likely be seen as a niche vehicle that Porsche can't see building for the namesake alone. I believe a chief developer said the GT2 must have a justified reason to be built, that there must be a market for it. At what would surely start in the vicinity of $200-210,000, hard to fault them for their reasoning.
If I wanted turbo, I'll get the 911 Turbo S.

But if they must then, I hope they add a huge turbo so that it has a considerable amount of lag and make it a beast to drive. You know, in the spirit of the Ferrari F40, lightweight + massive turbo.
Why would they take a giant step back in technology and then in the spirit of a competitor?

I doubt it, they'll likely use less powerful variable-geometry twin-turbos so as not to intrude the performance of the current 991 Turbo.

I can't explain my logic other than, I WANT IT LIKE THAT. :lol: Or just keep the GT3 RS naturally aspirated, if fine as is.

But if they turbocharged the GT3 RS, then what will be special about the GT3 RS?

The same thing most likely that made the GT2 RS special compared to the Turbo. Which most people also wondered what was going to make it so special when a twin turbo 911 already existed. In other words it wont be AWD, it will be lighter and more nimble and other things as well

So, the proper GT3 RS (NA) will no longer exist, and the GT2 RS will be the new GT3 RS (Turbo).

I don't know how to feel about not having a naturally aspirated RS model, but if it has to be turbocharged then, oh well, my favorite RS will always be the 997 GT3 RS Mk1.

My favorite will be the one that is fast :sly:

I'd be pretty surprised to be honest if they followed through with turbocharging a GT3. All these articles about it are linking it to the recall that just happened as a way for Porsche to avoid it again. They've found what the problem is, & I don't think Porsche will see turbocharging as the answer. If anything, I see them reworking the engine itself to fix it for the RS than de-tuning it & using forced induction. Seems very un-Porsche.

Yeah there's definitely no turbo there... which means the GT2 is still a possibility. No front fender intakes either, and aero pieces on the corners that aren't in the renderings.

I think they need to make a Turbo RS, which would be a track-oriented Turbo S, complete with four wheel drive and a rollcage. They wouldn't have to give the Turbo S more power, just make it lightweight.

They should also build a 911 K (Kompressor) just because a supercharged 911 would be super awesome. Give it a big intake above the roof like an NSX R. While they are at it, a 911 K S, a 911 4K, a 911 4K S, and a 911 K RS. Because why not?

A Turbo RS, esp that you described is what the GT2 already is....

And they've already said there are no plans to build one until the market warrants one; building one just to keep the namesake going would a waste otherwise.

Nothing confirmed, but word on the street (or dealers) is that production of the 991 GT3 will end next year in February, rumored in part to let the RS takeover the production line. Further down the line, should history follow Porsche tradition, the 991.2 GT3 could appear as a '17 model.

What do you guys think about the

2015 Porsche 911 turbo S ??

The new crop of super high performance Porsches leave me a bit cold, really. They're incredibly fast and capable and excellent to drive, but they've gotten so big, heavy, and computerised that I don't really find them very appealing anymore. I think the GTS cars are the best; a manual gearbox, nicely judged NA engine, and rear wheel drive in a well sorted chassis is my idea of perfection, rather than a ludicrously fast dual clutch monster packed to the brim with computers, AWD, and turbochargers.

Very good point 1 question there is gonna be a 2015 model of the
991 gt3 right?

No.

As McLaren says, the current model will continue unaltered until early next year, then the line will flip to the RS.

No news as yet on a 991.2 GT3, but I've heard someone with very good connections at Porsche HQ say they have no plans.

I think it's a tad early for the Mk. II rumors though, no? If I recall correctly, the 997.2 showed up 3 years after the .1.
