Porsche 911 GT3 (991) Announced!

Is it terrible that I read that as "Rolls Royce cars"?

Here I was imagining you were talking about launching yacht tenders...

Brace yourselves, the 991 GT3 RS is coming.

Want!

>500bhp, less weight, more aero, ceramics, even stickier tyres (the rears look HUGE!)... I'm guessing this will be a pretty effective on a track :D

Though Autocar claiming it will generate similar levels of downforce to a GT3 race car is probably a little (lot!) wide of reality. The Mclaren P1 with all it's active aero only develops 600kg, which is pretty much what the GT3 cars develop. I doubt the RS will be anywhere near that.

But will it still be PDK only?
Yes.

All this recent hype from few websites proclaiming that Porsche is considering a manual were debuked by the head of development behind the GT3 last year.

Andreas Preuninger
What do we know about the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS?
For a start, the RS model will retain the latest GT3’s dual-clutch PDK gearbox and electric steering. Hardcore fans might think that a travesty, but Preuninger told CAR that the PDK ‘box now offers more involvement than the manual option, and that the steering is at least as good as the legendary GT3 RS 4.0’s.

We’ll decide on that when we drive the new GT3, but regardless Preuninger and his Porsche Motorsport team can’t make the change to a stick shift: ‘There’s no chance of a manual. We don’t want to offer too many options on our GT cars. And if you’ve got a manual and a PDK you’ve got to have different set-ups for the suspension, the aero, the tyres, everything. We are a small team and can only concentrate on one car.’

However, the PDK might ‘box might be tuned for quicker shifts (the new GT3 already changes gear in less than 100ms) and the steering may have some specific tuning to match the more focused RS-specific suspension.

I wonder if the GT2/GT2 RS will have manual.. The torque from those could be too much for the PDK.

Well the Turbo is PDK only, so I guess a GT2 would also be PDK, maybe a bit fortified.

Porsche has said there are no plans at the moment for a GT2 because the new Turbo/S already exceeds their performance benchmark & they won't be building a GT2 just for the sake of it. For the GT2 to continue, Porsche wants a valid engineering reason to do so that makes the performance worth pursuing beyond the Turbo.

Edit* There's also the pricing bracket to place it in between the GT3 RS/Turbo S & the upcoming 960.

Just a question but I wonder if the air inlets are going to be part of this GT3 RS?
According to insiders, yes, the inlets from the rear Turbo bodywork will remain in place of the air inlets that used to be below the spoiler on the last models.

So if I understand correctly, the air inlets on the engine lid (I don't know if I use the correct words) are going to replaced for these turbo like air inlets?

That's what the word is. Apparently Auto Express was the first to report it & it matches what insiders are saying.

The seven speed will be offered in limited platforms. Also the PDK will be the standard transmission for all Porsche models. Don't know if anyone has heard yet but the LMP1 car will run a V4 with hybrid.

For those that may not know the seven speed is the PDK without the hydraulic controls.

The PDK is a hydraulically controlled 7 speed twin clutch, and it's an option on the 991/Cayman/Boxster. Only the Turbo and GT3 have PDK standard, all the other models get a 7 speed manual.

Jesus. That rear shot.... Those aren't tires. Those are steamrollers.....

They are supposed to be the same as the wheels & tyres on the 918... so the rears would be 325/30/21 MPS cups :D

Edit...

If the fronts are 918 sized they will be a 265/35/20... which is a massive front tyre for a 911 (the 997 GT3RS had a 245 front tyre)... coupled with the 4WS, I'm guessing this won't have much understeer

I wonder if that slight ridge up the bonnet and over the roof signify anything, or whether it's just some random masking on this particular mule?
