Project CARS - Hardware recommendation on PC

I have a friend who plays some Windows games on Linux but he told me it is a pain in the arse to get the GPU working properly and most of the games doesn't look that good as in windows mainly because of lack of drivers
But running graphically intensive games through emulation (essentially what Linux is doing) never gets near the results available from direct access to the hardware.

Edit to correct spelling.

I've finally decided to stop thinking about building a PC and actually do it. My budget for the hardware is around £1000, I already have a 1080p monitor (may be upgraded sooner or later to 1440p but I'm satisfied with 1080p right now) a keyboard, mouse, steering wheel and OS.

I'm just wondering if this would be adequate for high settings, or if not what would you guys improve about it?

Thanks, sorry if I missed anything out.

Yeah, should be good for high+some ultra. May need slight overclock but a mild one.

The specs will be very good, you should have no problem. Take note of this though:

It might also impact your ability to add a second card if need be, in the future.

Thanks for the help guys, decided to have a look for similar builds and the card seems to fit in with no real problem. I'll probably start purchasing the parts next week, looking forward to it.

Do what I did, get yourself a pair of tin snips and cut away part of the chassis to make room for the cards..
Yup, sometimes you have to be a bit creative. In my case (Fractal Design Node 605) it wasn't the length of the card that was a problem, but the heatpipe on top/height. When closing the lid, the heatpipe on top touched the sound insulation on the inside of the lid. So I ended up cutting out a part of the insulation on the lid, so now it not only fits, but has room to spare.

I had the same issue fitting the air cooler on my i5. On the original case, there was a trumpet that funneled the air straight out of the side. Unscrewed that, tin snips to cut the holes out, now I've got nice warm legs, and a nice cool CPU!

I assume this is the correct thread to ask this, if not, then I'm sorry.

I'm wondering what setting(s) (graphics and otherwise) I should expect with these PC specs:
  • CPU - 3.8 GHz AMD Athlon X4 760K (Quad Core)
  • GPU - Nvidia GeForce GTX 760
  • Memory - 8 GB RAM
I ask because I was hoping that I would be able to play at a solid 1080p/60fps in high settings, but, judging by the recommended specs, the CPU processing speed is worrying me a bit. Should I be worried, or am I just overreacting?:scared:

Dutch site Hardware.info did a test/review with benchmarks of the Alienware Alpha. Dutch version. Short summary: good for older/light games (able to run at 1080p/60FPS), not so great for more recent/heavier games (not able to run 1080p/60FPS and sometimes not even 30FPS). The slow hard drive was also considered very bad.

The ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO is here! Cheers all round, fellas. It is coming together.

The checklist:
CPU
MBO

GPU
CASE
PSU
HD

SSD
RAM
OS
Cooler
Sound
Bluray
TV
Well, fellas, it is (almost) finished. It works and is marvelous, as is.

Complete:
CASE
CPU
MBO
PSU
HHD
RAM
Cooler
Bluray Drive
OS

Lacking:
GPU
SSD
TV

The soundcard onboard the MBO seems plenty good enough, so I've scratched that from the needs list for the time being.
I have 2 60gb SSD's I will use until I find a great deal on the 250gb SSD I really want.
The PSU is definitely overkill at 1000W as 850W would have been plenty. But if there is one thing to overkill on in a high end build, I think it should be the PSU.
I love the case. Plenty of open air and space.
I am waiting until the last possible minute on the GPU and the TV/monitor, waiting for the best possible prices.

I've built this one from the ground up for an all-in price of $1046.90 as of right now.
The math won't really add up as far as prices go. I got most of this at sale prices and I've not even touched any of the mail in rebates yet. Also, due to some good connections with my job, I've been able to get a thing or two for near cost.
If anyone has any questions about anything regarding the build or tips on certain components, please ask. I did this with a lot of trial and error. I could build the next one in half the time.

Protip: if you get a Corsair Hydro Cooler, you do not need any bonding agent as the cooler comes with it pre-applied. Simply clean the CPU with alcohol and a coffee filter and attach the Cooler.

Looks great:eek::eek:👍👍
The GTX980 only benchmarks slightly higher than the 970. Did you consider the 970?

Well, the 980 is the dream. I'll likely end up with the 970 unless I get the 980 for $500 or less.

I did consider a 970 until the whole "3,5+0,5 Gb" ordeal... then two days before I picked my parts from the store they put on their website the Asus ROG Matrix 780 Ti for only 500€ (~$567) which was at least 150€ (~$170) cheaper than on any other store in my country...

I've been able to test my current build on a few of the latest games I've been interested in (AC Unity, Shadow of Mordor just to name a couple) and I've been able to run those in Ultra with no noticeable slowdowns... that coupled with high scores in 3DMark leaves me confident that I might be able to run pCARS in Ultra or close to...

Then benchmark on the 780Ti is only slightly higher (5%ish) than the 970 but costs at least 40% more, at least in Canada.

Here it costs between 20-30% more than the 970 but given I've got an OC model (which I've already been able to test with a higher OC with no issues at all), I'm more than happy with my choice... only thing I'm missing is a SSD, which I'll be getting before the end of the month

hi everyone, I had asked for some suggestions and recommendations for the monitor? has anyone had some good experience for racing games that the monitor can keep up with? not sure here, but maybe a newbie question :)
If you are looking for a single monitor option this 27" for $200 is a good deal. You could do a lot worse than that.

Personally, I'd go with a TV, 40" or more, with an additional monitor like that one set up for your true computing needs.

The two factors in using a HDTV are lag rate and motion blur. Any of the 40"+ Vizio E Series TVs get really good ratings for gaming. Downside with them is you see so many online which are refurbed. With the market flooded with refurbed units, I would buy one that is and make sure it is from a seller you could return it to if there was an issue.

The one I am waiting on is the Samsung 55" H6350. I am sure there will be "March Madness" and St. Patrick's Day sales running pretty soon, so I will wait it out a bit longer before I pull the trigger one way or the other.

Of course, if you are willing to try a refurbed option, either this or this would be a great value for the money. With those thin bezels, a triple monitor setup could be done with ease and dignity. If your system can push them, anyway.

I do hate to repost this, but I would like to have my question(s) answered (potentially to quell my fears).

Thank you ahead of time.:)

I think you would struggle to get high settings at 1080/60. I think either you'd have to look at running it with no AA (unthinkable), or 720p with DS2X. Most environmental settings (like shadow quality, reflection mapping, global environment mapping, etc.) would go down to medium.

Obviously, this in it's near-gold status, it still depends on whether nVidia can bring any more improvements to the fold. The Athlon is the weak link, it's quite an old CPU and will struggle with the sheer amount of maths the tyre model produces.

Need some info on these GPU's, please...

I only own a R9 270oc and have no idea about the real performance of those GPUs but maybe this link will help you a little http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-980-vs-GeForce-GTX-780-Ti

Given my personal experience, I can vouch for the 780 Ti so far, given I've thrown a few games released late last year (AC Unity, Shadow of Mordor, Far Cry 4, Dragon Age Inquisition), all with Ultra settings and all have run at 1080p/60fps minimum, with Shadow of Mordor being the only one dropping bellow 60fps at some point in its benchmark (54fps to be exact)...

That being said, I'm pretty confident I'll be able to run pCARS at Ultra in 1080p/60fps with my current build. :D:tup:
