The back area where my fan is on my PS2 is really dusty. I've read about people using compressed air to clean out their PS2's, but wouldn't it be safer for me to hook a vacuum up and suck the dust off of the fan that way?

Do something anyway as i never did which has now resulted in a completely dead PS2.

I'm selling it for NZ$85 (paid NZ$1089 for it) because it can still be repaired.

You have to use a vacuum. I believe it says so in the manual.

BTW - can anyone explain why my PS2 sometimes skips? Actually, it does it kind of often. For all discs. Right now, i'm banging it getnly yet with power.

The lens might be dirty.

If your warranty is up, open her up, and clean the lens with some compressed air (10psi or so)

Canned air is the standard procedure. Just turn on your PS2 so the fan is spinning and blow some air in there. You could even just blow on it with your mouth, but be prepaired to get a face full of dust (:

He's trying to say that if your warenty is finished, there's no harm in opening it up. I say that opening it up might cause more problems than you already have....

I now see, that a red light in the PS2 that is supposed to light up when you have a disc inside is going out from time to time, and sometimes, it stays out for a period of time. Now what?

My sister's boyfriend knows a lot about computers, and i was thinking abour asking him to open it up. But is it still a lens problem?

The red light on the front? Red means that you have the ps2 in standby.

Anyways I have two questions GC,

1. How long have you had your ps2?
2. Do you get disc read errors?

No, a red light inside the PS2. How stupid do you think i am?

BTW - when the light goes out, you hear that heart-stomping skipping noise. :(

1. Probably about two or three years, but i have never constantly played it. Mayeb a couple hours a day...
2. Yes.

Ok, i just sucked its guts out with a vacuum - since i'm scared to open it up myself - and still having problems.

My disks get dirty inside the system. One night I was playing and the PS2 was less than a month old and I heard it struggling to read the disk for like a minute. I took out the disk and it was flithy. Cleaned it off and no probs.

2. Yes.

Basically you have had it since launch, right? If so, call up sony and tell them you are having disc read errors. From what i understand, they should fix it for free, not including s&h. (since it is a commong error, the guys at work say sony will fix it no charge.)

Ok, so i all i do is call Sony up, and tell them i'm having problems with the lens in my production-day PS2?

I think my PS2 finally grew some balls, it's working ok again. In a month or so, if it still has problems, i'll call.

Thanks for all you help space, i really appreciate it. ;)

Oh great, it's acting up again. I'm calling Sony today, especially if it doesn't read DVDs...

Don't hit your PS2! That's a good way to damage the optical block.
