PS3 General Discussion

I think once the PS3 is out, and as long as it lives up to expectations, a fair amount of pressure will be off Sony's back.
That phrase I noted there is the key. As long as it lives up to the expectations. And, they are some mighty expectations that everyone is putting on it. But, it will be a while, more than a couple months, until we really find out how things are going. Will the price be too much once the early adopters are done buying?? Will their online strategy be accepted?? Will the games live up to the hype?? And like you pointed out, will the console WORK well when you get it home?? There is a lot of cutting-edge, mostly unproven tech in it, so it will be interesting. I hope it does. But, I'm waiting until probably early next year to see how things pan out, and for more games.

Yeah, until something is in your hands you can not know for certain how good (or bad) something is. But as far as the PS3 is concerned I like what I've seen so far, in spite of the fact I own a 360 and I'm happy with it. In fact I like what I've seen of the PS3 more than I did of the 360 before launch. But that's just impressions and such.
I guess we'll see in under 4 weeks time. It'll be a real struggle sifting through the BS and the good stuff when the PS3 launches, though.

Edit: I'm not sure if it's been said but can you play music from the HDD whilst playing a game, same as with the 360?

Yep, I hear ya. I love my 360, and it had some good stuff at launch. But, the PS3 is every bit as good, if not a bit better. But, until I get to see it first hand, and get a feel for the thing myself, I'm waiting. There are some great launch games, but nothing that is going to make me spend that amount of money to get. I have Oblivion on 360. Carbon and TW07 look good, but I'm getting them for 360. And, Motorstorm and Resistance are just not games that get me that excited. They look great, but not enough for a new system.

No it's not. Must we bring up Sony's claim of the PS2 being able to produce Toy Story level graphics? Most gamers are stupid and contrived, and rate things based on graphics, so I find it very easy to believe that people would buy a console for graphics. Especially since that was the entire reason the 360 sold so well initially, or any new generation of consoles for that matter.

They really said that? Lol.

Must we bring up Microsoft's identical claim about being able to produce Toy Story level graphics?

No, because that is irrelavent to the discussion. You said that no-one buys consoles for graphical improvements alone. If that was the case we would still be playing NES's and Master Systems.

^^ Because obviously looks are what make people buy a new system....jesus christ thats retarded.
WTF? I think the PS3 is going to be a great system. It just doesn't have anything exclusive to it YET that will get me to drop that kind of money on a new system. Most all the games I want to play this coming holiday season I can get for my 360. And some of their exclusive titles, Motorstorm and Resistance, as I said before, look great, they just don't interest me. So, like I said, until games I really want to play that are exclusive to the PS3 come out, I'm spending my money elsewhere. I fail to see how that is a "retarded" way of thinking.

Yet games like GTA are top sellers...without top notch visuals....hmmmmmm

You guy's put so much emphasis on visuals you lose sight of gameplay...I guess that's what today's youth is interested in though.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I wasn't saying that visuals are the most important element, oh no. I was saying a good portion of the fools who camp out for every console launch are doing so for "teh grafix!!!11one!." The fact is that the PS3 will sell for a good while on graphical prowess alone, just like the 360 did (because you can't tell me they bought it for advances in gameplay).

personally i think that the only reason the xbox360 sold was because of its graphics because i still prefer to play on my playstation 2 as i think the gameplay of the playstation 2 is better and more enjoyable

Just the reason why the PS3 isn't getting any of my money next month. Most of it is going to Nintendo. I'm very excited about the Wii, and will be getting one at launch. I'll get a PS3 at some point. But in the coming 6 months or so, its either more 360 games, a couple PS2 games, or Wii stuff for me.

I have to admit they are doing a lot with the good old Playstation 2, Final Fantasy 12 looks fantastic! Still, with that said I find Playstation games better than most PS2 games, much like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 they focus on graphics more than the gameplay and content.

I am gonna wait for the PS3, like I did with the 360, it's too much trouble rushing to get it and or preordering(We all know there are those of who are just going to sell it on ebay anyway. . . ), considering their will be problems with it apon launch, there is nothing beyond flaw.

Well, I guess I was wrong believing there were to be "Entitlements" on the PS3. This is very disappointing.

No Gamerscores for PS3

Bragging score akin to Xbox 360's Gamerscore and Achievements won't appear on the PlayStation 3.

By Tim Surette, GameSpot Posted Oct 20, 2006 4:37 pm PT

One way to tell if someone has been logging some serious hours on their Xbox 360 is to check their Gamerscore. The feature tracks how many Achievements--various game goals set by developers--gamers accomplish by assigning each task a numerical score. By adding up all the numbers, gamers get their Gamerscore and bragging rights (provided they didn't buy it).
The feature has been a surprise success for the Xbox 360, with gamers playing games they otherwise wouldn't solely to try to boost their scores.
With its success, many thought Sony would mimic the system for its upcoming PlayStation 3. It was even once rumored that Sony's system would be called "Entitlements," causing a bit of a row among Microsoft fans.
Now it appears that Sony isn't jumping on the bandwagon. According to Wired.com, Jack Tretton, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has said that achievements, entitlements, or whatever else they may be called, will not be a part of the PS3's program.
When asked about the prospect, Tretton said, "We didn't mention that, but it is our intention that we would have it--although I think it would be game-centric. It's very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples' success on Madden."
So instead of having one score across all games, it appears Sony is opting for glorified leaderboards for each game.
"So the publisher [of each game] will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis," said Tretton. "The intention right now is not to have something that is pan-platform. We do intend to do that with our [first-party] stuff."
Tretton also admitted that the ranking system would not be included in the launch games. Sony had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

I read on a few different sites that PS3 wasn't going to have a gamescore type system. Now I dont really care but why is it Sony does something MS does it makes headlines as copying, Now they dont copy them and it makes headlines. Seems like no matter what they do they make headlines. They are ending up like the T.O. of gaming consoles.

What was there other than graphics to upgrade to an Xbox360 for? Especially at launch?

We posted the same thing (nearly) at the same time!

Much better online system, games, PC integration (streaming music and photos and videos), etc.

Just keep them away from my percocet, and I'm ok.

Yea, I agree with Duck. The "LIVE" implementation on the 360 is almost perfect. From the trailers, to the demos, to the XBLA games, your GamerTag and score, it all just works very well. That by itself is almost worth it alone to me. The games are fun, and look great in HD. But the system itself, as a whole, on and offline, just works very well.

I know, but I'm just saying some people did buy it for its better graphics. I wasnt sold on better graphics since my Xbox does better than my PS2 and Box rarely gets played.

To me XBL is very nice but not a system seller. thats like saying the Linux OS for PS3 will be a system seller. Wait it just might. never mind. You win.

I win! *pats self on back*

Frankly, I agree with this view. Leaderboards within a game make much more sense.

Its kind of hard to describe really. The whole thing just works well. Live used to just be a way to get online and game. But now, on the 360, its a whole all-encompassing system that you can do so much with. And its all done just very seamlessly. Really smooths things out well, and makes for a very complete feeling to the system I feel.

And yes, Linux on the PS3 is going to be great fun. No clue how it will play out, but that will just be fun to mess with. It will be real interesting to see what comes of that down the road.

While I see what he is saying, its only one more click when looking at someone's profile. Sure, their score, as a single huge number, doesn't really tell you much. But, all you have to do is see what games they've played, and what they've accomplished in those games to know how they are compared to you in the game. Its not hard. Both systems would work, but I don't see anything wrong with the way MS does it.

That was for Circle ;)
Wow. I'd like to thank my mom, my agent, all the fans..... :D

Seriously though, I really can't wait for the Linux/PS3 thing. That is going to be real fun. Usually, I wouldn't care about something like that. But, I can't help but like the idea of this. It will be fun to play with, thats for sure.

Yeh, you play your Wii, but trust me, it's no where near the revolution in fun and gaming anyone thinks it is. It doesn't hold a candle to the DS, any day of the week.

Fill me in here. Why is it I should listen to you for my gaming advice?? I'll make that decision myself, thank you.

I have a DS, and like it very much. I've played more fun games on it than any other system in recent months. But, unlike you, I don't compare all my systems to each other, or say that one is the best. I have a lot of systems, old and new. I don't care which is better. As long as they are fun to play, I'm happy.

I still play my Dreamcast and N64 quite often because of that. They both had very fun games. So, you can go ahead and keep comparing things like its some competition. Thats up to you. But, I don't do that. If its fun, I'll buy it. But, I'll be making those choices myself.
