PS3 General Discussion

Its also worth noting that depending on your network you may have to open up certain ports to allow your PC and PS3 to see each other for media sharing to work.

I needed to do just that for my desktop (running Vista), but once done they found each other no problem at all and the speed and quality of streaming is impressive. All the family pictures and video run through the TV is great and watching Climb Dance on a full screen was a good treat as well. I only hope that we get an update with a few more media types supported, as at present I have quite a bit that I will need to convert to watch.

Have to give me laptop a go now.

This also works with a cat-5 straight from the PC to the PS3, right?

I was surfing GTP last night on my PS3 and encountered a couple of issues with the web browser - 1) I don't know how to copy and paste weblinks - this makes it very difficult to create links in posts... 2) The text editor is limited to a certain amount of characters, making it impossible to make long posts or even edit an existing long post... any solutions, or will I have to wait on another update..?

I've also noticed those issues, TM... I still find the PSP's web browser better, partly due to it being a little more friendly, and the New Posts function on GTP works properly, rather than it not working at all or not updating you with the latest posts through the PS3.

BTW, I'm starting to have PS3 network issues again. It's randomly signing me in and out...

well i managed to share everything that i added to media player library, wether it was in the my documents / mymusic folders or not.

This really is getting good, wonder what other features they will use. All i need to do is find what format of videos the ps3 supports and hopefully be able to convert from .avi

I was thinking the same thing as TM. Hmm... I'm having the same problem GT. I'm on my PS3 now because I'm reformating my pc.

Warhawk is fun, there's no doubt about it. But they need to fix the freeze issue, the game froze two times last night, and I am not the only one suffers from this.
Other than that, the games are very smooth with 20+ people, there's no lag whatsoever, controls are nicely laid out, graphic is good, sound is good. When I get a hang of the airplane, this game will become BF 1942 on PS3 for me:tup:

...And the scale of the battlefields are huge. I'm surprised they fit everything in a 700MB package.

And it has a very high learning curve.

I am using Windows XP, and I found the following information in a post at boardsus.playstation.com, followed the instructions, and it worked perfectly for me.

"This is how to set up media sharing using firmware update 1.80. You must have your PS3 connected to your computer via a network. (Meaning it must share the same internet connection as the pc you are trying to connect it to.)

1)If you don't already have it, Download Windows Media Player 11
2)Install Windows Media Player 11
3)Once installed click on Tools in the title bar
4)Click on Options
5)Click on Library
6)Click on Configure Sharing
7)Click on Settings
8)Make sure Allow New Devices and Computers Automatically is checked
9)Make sure All Ratings are checked
10)Click on OK

Everything should work fine. The PS3 should automatically detect your PC now. If you want to add pictures for your PS3 to see them they must be in the MyPictures folder of your main account on your PC.

Now you can have all the music, videos and pictures from your PC right on your PS3!"

I am running the PS3 on a wireless connection, and while the router is about 50 Feet, and three walls away, it works great. The only video, picture, and music files that I have seen are those residing in the My Pictures, My Video, and My Music folders under the My Documents folder of my main account on the PC. If I want to see more stuff that I may have on my computer, I suppose that I must simply move the files over to one of these respective folders. The PS3 gets more useful with each Firmware Update.

Thanks. 👍

Man, on foot squad action is awesome. Yesterday, a couple of people I met online got together and had an "on foot" squad moving down badlands, climbing mountains and sniping people. When you communicate on foot, you are extremely more effective than you are when you take a vehicle. We took down warhawks, turrets, and tanks from the mountain tops, lol. We had 4 people quit throughout the duration of our game because they were upset (well, they might have had lockups, but it's better to assume they quit because of our 1337 skillz).

You mean to say you're not confined to a plane in Warhawk? You are actually a dude that can enter many vehicles instead of "being" the plane?

AWESOME.

I'm using a LINKSYS router for both my PC and my PS3. I'm using Windows XP as well, but I tried that guideline above and my PS3 still can't recognize it. It says "No Media servers were found"

Now, is it because my PS3 is not connected directly to my PC but to a router that acts as a splitter of internet connection? ('cause that's the main reason why I bought it)

Tried it and it worked like a charm. Having every single music file on my computer accessible on the tv's sound system is IMO almost worth the 600$ alone, not to mention the pictures and videos. I really like how you can use any of the slide show effects on your computers pictures

AARGHH! this sucks major arse :grumpy:

Does your router have a firewall? If it does you may need to open the required ports for the PC on the routers firewall (WMP help will detail what they are), I had to do this for my PC as it could not 'see' the PS3, once done it worked a charm (I'd give you my port details but I'm running Vista and I believe they are different).

Regards

Scaff could be right, but for me to sort out the media sharing issues between the 360 and the PC, I had to disable the firewall on the computer and enable Windows firewall for the time being - nothing from the router. Maybe give that a try.

Although, I've not tired it with my PS3 yet.

Edit: Both PS3s do the exact same thing. Whenever you browse around in the menus while signed in, it just randomly disconnects the network, or an error appears from the PSN. This never happened before the last Firmware update, and now that it happens on both consoles, I'm pretty convinced it was the update. I've not done anything else to the network to make this happen.

I know this is mostly about the PSP rather than the PS3 but I think anyone here who has both will be interested in this. I just updated my PSP to version 3.50 at work and as anticipated this means I can access the menu of the ps3 from work and much of the content on it as well, this also means that if SONY is smart they included the ability to access the remote media servers (another recently added feature) and all the content associated with that as well. Unfortunately for one reason or another (probably either because I'm folding@home right now or because the PSP needs to be re-paired once the update is complete) I get a time out message and can't access the menu Jeremy I know you have both so would you like to confirm whether or not this new remote play feature includes access to your home network? If it does... I might just crap myself

Yes, it does.

::covers ears:: don't tell me that while I'm at work, I don't have a change of pants...

Seriously though, how does it stream from the computer? as fast as the ps3?
