Removing the 720p option from PS3 settings will then force the PS3 to upscale all games to 1080p.
No, every game has to support 1080p (and every other resolution) separately. If a game doesn't support 1080p and you disable 720p it will fall back to 480p.

First: Xbox 360 DOES NOT support native 1080p resolution, it's upscaling. It's a fact.
It does but few games support rendering in 1080p.

Xbox360:

Fifa Street 3 = 1920x1080 (4xAA)
NBA Street Home court (demo) = 1920x1080 (4xAA)
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel = 1920x1080 for any HD output (including PC res), 1280x960 for 4:3 output, 1376x768 for 480p widescreen (no AA)
Virtua Tennis 3 = 1920x1080 (2xAA)

Interesting as Ive not had that happen with any recent games Ive owned were they wouldnt scale to 1080p and fell back to 480p with 720p being disabled/skipped. It certainly used to be an issue with displays that only supported upto 1080i and not 1080p were it would resort to 480p.

Sony keep updating the firmware so even if its an issue it cant be for many games. Already we see some studios producing games in sub 720p resolutions although not just on PS3 to be fair so their is a certain degree of marketing tricks being used in the industry.

The main issue with the whole upscaling thing is often though, that users misunderstand, thinking they get native 1080p resolution in games with a 1080p output on their console.

Guess I'll just change my preorder from the PS3 version to the Xbox360 one. Better safe than sorry. Plus, I've still got a few MS points lying around, just in case I want some of S2U's DLC.

Do you use a wheel mate?

Currently, no. Had to get rid of of it when I moved to where I live now and GT5 wasn't enough incentive to buy one, so I doubt S2U will be enough to make me get one, given how little time I'm spending with games nowadays.

I wouldn't go for the version with botchered wheel support if I was :D

That or the fact that Sony did nothing but run their mouth about 1080p everything before and during the PS3 launch.

If you want Shift 2 at 1920X1080 then get the PC version.

All the Xbox is doing is upscaling from 1280x720 to 1920x1080

Look at the blue lines in this pic OP. Can you see how small 1280x720p is compared to 1920x1080?

If you didn't upscale a 1280x720p image then the image wouldn't fill your 1920x1080 screen. The Xbox is just enlarging an image to a bigger size so it fits the screen.

Most HDTVs already do this and have done for years but there is a handful out there that don't upscale or have poor upscaling. This was particularly an issue in 2005 where some early HDTVs would only do 1920x1080, so any 1280x720 output wouldn't even show.

On my 3 year old HDTV there's no difference between my TV upscaling 720p output and the Xbox doing it. The 1080p output of your Shift game is 1280x720p and enlarged to 1920x1080. The game is 720p no matter what size you upscale and upscaling doesn't improve the graphics or textures, it just makes a small image fit a bigger screen by enlarging it.

If the Xbox version looks better, its because of the games development and nothing to with upscaling.

What's even more funny is when people select 1080p on their Xbox and they have a 1280x720/1366x768 size screen. The TV has to downscale the Xbox upscale lol coz 1080p is mega grafix yo. You wanna selct 1080p all timez homie.

If you dont have a 1080p tv the 360 does not upscale to 1080p as it just goes black and then back to 720 👍

Has it always done that? A user setup his xbox to upscale 1080p and got a terribly scaled picture with his non 1920x1080 screen.

The 1366x768 panels I've used can accept 1920x1080 feeds.

I'll swop you wheel support for your graphics.

2nd that! My T500RS will now have to be taken off my playseat and I'll be digging out the G25!
Thanks for the lack of support EA!

Nah I haven't bought the game mate.
Going to wait for a patch to get rid of lag input.

I see it like this.

I pay for a premium seat at a 3D film.

The film starts and all is great. The last 3rd and the reel breaks.
Manager explains that we can finish the film in 2D and come back for free next week to watch again.

The experience is ruined.
I would rather start from scratch with full effect, than get half an experience and wait for a patch. (which may never come btw).

TDU2 is the same. I'm waiting for a handling patch for fix that rubbish then I'll buy.
Sad part is, IF a patch does come for it, most people would have gone and never played the proper experience.

If no patch arrive, then Dirt3 is the next hype train to catch.

Forza 4 seems sooooo far away. Sob.

Of course, with this wonderful HD era, you get games like Hitman Blood Money on 360 where it doesn't do a display test before it loads, so it can't display over HDMI without you plugging in a VGA cable and setting your TV to PAL60, despite HDMI being 60HZ any way. D'oh!

Don't know if this has been covered by anyone else (74 pages in, surely it has) I have a Display button on my TV that when I press it shows me what resolution it's at.

Even when I have all possible video modes checked in my PS3 settings my TV reports 720p while in the game, 1080p while in the XMB menu.

So there is no upscaling going on. The game runs at 720p so don't waste your time playing with the resolutions in the settings.

thread gets better if you put the OP on your ignore list.

Lol. I like this one. I didn't know one could do this. He made a comment in another post and the OP decided to make his own thread about the non sense.

I prefer to have Shift 2 with everything it does right with the graphics and the environment be at 720 rather than sacrificing graphics and the environment at 1080. SMS you did it right. Unfortunately everyone can't be satisfied. We have a Shift 2 hater on our hands. Most of us pleased with the graphics.

To the OP, either go back to GT5 and be bored or get a new flat screen lcd/plasma and enjoy the game. IMHO, the game looks alot better than GT5 in the graphics department across the board hands down.

Currently, no. Had to get rid of of it when I moved to where I live now and GT5 wasn't enough incentive to buy one, so I doubt S2U will be enough to make me get one, given how little time I'm spending with games nowadays.

You may want to reconsider that thought. Taking time to setup the wheel and the cars, makes a big difference. Its seems like a real driving experience for me. On release day, I played from 9:30am to about 11pm. My primarily wheel hand ached pretty good. My shift hand and was okay. I couldn't stop trying to master the beginning of my career and competing in Autolog. I am getting alot better use out of my G27 with Shift 2 than I was with Grand T.....what's the name of that game. Isn't it called Grand Turismo or something like that, lol.
