PSP Redesign Details Revealed?

Back in March, we brought word of a new and improved PlayStation Portable. But what good are the rumblings of new hardware without some of the details? Today, thanks to several sources close to Sony, we bring you that nitty gritty as the redesigned Playstation Portable nears completion.

Keep in mind this isn't Playstation Portable 2, but rather a redesign of the original, so it will be sporting the same internal hardware. But that's about the only thing that hasn't changed. The new Playstation Portable will have a much slimmer design, thanks mostly to a new LED screen that will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up far less space. That LED also helps pump up the battery life of this sexy new model, which can last as much as four times longer than the original PSP. While the new PSP still makes use of the UMD drive, it will be a faster version and to help speed up loadtimes and gameplay, the portable will come packed with 8GBs of internal flash memory. Finally, the PSP's much maligned buttons have been revamped and the D-Pad has gotten a major overhaul, giving portable gamers something more like a Playstation 3 D-pad to play with.

The company is still trying to decide whether or not they want to include a built-in camera, as they weigh whether the cost of adding the device will be worth the benefit to gamers. Our money is on no camera because of the competitive price issues. Those of you holding out for a touchscreen are, unfortunately, going to have to wait, though word has it that it will most like make an appearance in Sony's next portable gaming device. While the new PSP will remain black, Sony is still trying to decide whether it will have a glossy or matte finish.

The final price for this new PSP hasn't been set, but Sony is hoping to sell it for under $170 or so. Manufacturing should commence in the upcoming weeks, and the product is going to be officially unveiled at this year's E3. The sale date being tossed around is August, but don't be surprised if it's pushed back to September. What's this reworked PSP called? It doesn't have a name as of yet, but may we suggest "PSP Slim"?

Now, keep in mind this isn't fact, but if most if this is true, would you buy another PSP if you had one, or would you buy one if you didn't have one at all?
 
Buying this revamped PSP when you already have the original is the same as buying the new slim-line PS2 when you already have the fat PS2.

IIRC, all the slim PS2 did was of course slim down the size, drop the fan sound, and add an ethernet port. The first two things aren't big deals for home consoles. The third thing could be added on with a $30 add-on.

With this, it has 8GB memory built-in, faster load times, better controls, far better battery life, more portability (which is key for handhelds), etc. It's a big difference.
 
It may be worth getting for its Playstation 3 capabilities as well...

Other rumors include a slot loading UMD drive instead of the flip open design now, better battery and pressure sensitive buttons

The only thing that really appeals to me is the 8GB of built in-memory, but I'm happy with the original one I have.
 
Now that it is the way it should have been in the first place, I am seriously considering buying it. I like the 8 gig bit, in particular. It may make it a pretty good MP3 player alternative (Most notably to the IPod Nano), instead of just a laughable excuse for an MP3 player. At $170, assuming it keeps its MP3 capability, it is a steal for an MP3 player. And you get portable GTA!
I notice, however, that they mention fixing the D-Pad (which is and always has been fine) but not the poor excuse for an analog stick. And I could care less about the camera, especially if it threatens to raise the price.

Just no. That is just as inaccurate as saying the Game Boy Color was just a Gameboy with a cool screen, or that the GBA SP was just a clamshell GBA. The PSP was promised to be a full multimedia handheld or something to that effect at launch, only to make people realize that to use any of the multimedia capabilities they would have to buy memory sticks, and that a Turbo Express could give it a run for its money in the battery life department.
The PSTwo was a cheaper, somewhat more reliable PS2 with the network card thrown in as a bonus. That was what I call a console restyle. This rumoured PSP redesign is what the PSP should have been from day 1.
 
I may have to consider getting one now. I love the things, but I just don't see myself needing it so much. I'm usually not away somewhere where I could play games. I have a 30GB iPod Video and a MotoQ...So I don't know. Maybe a used one.
 
I will get one on release, but only if they launch GT along with it, otherwise I will use my DSlite till GT comes out.
 
don't hold your breath for gt mobile, however if this looks good at launch I will probably pick one up and trade my current one in
 
Ghaaa! Why now? :nervous: Just my luck that a couple weeks ago I start to gain interest into getting a PSP and they release this...

I'm still a little skeptical though. I mean the slim PS2 didn't really add anything much except the ethernet port. There probably will be improved battery life and a slimmer design but I doubt we'll see the 8GBs of internal memory and if you do I'm sure the price will go back up from $170

I'd say that is apples and oranges. The Playstation would have continued to sell regardless of whether or not they restyled it. The PSP is in need of a redesign just so Sony can boost sales.
 
Anyway, Sony unveiled the new PSP at E3 a week ago, so I guess I'd update the people who don't know what all the features are.
  • Better screen – it does not "ghost", unlike the screen on the older PSPs.
  • Better battery – lasts longer, 'nuff said.
  • Faster loading – UMD games now supposedly load faster.
  • Built-in 64MB Memory – self explanatory.
  • More tactile d-pad – a minor improvement, but an improvement nonetheless.
  • Lighter, thinner – 19% thinner, 33% lighter
  • New color – "ice silver"
  • Available in two new bundles:
    • Daxter bundle – Comes with Daxter, 1GB mem stick, Family Guy Collection UMD, costs $199
    • Star Wars bundle – Comes with Star Wars Renegade Squadron and a special Star Wars themed PSP, costs $199
  • Video out – play your games and UMD movies on your TV, requires component cable
  • Other components changed up like speakers and WLAN switch in different places, UMD drive bay redesigned, etc
  • Coming in October to NA, dates unknown for Japan and PAL territories

I actually had no interest until I bought a PS3. Now I see all the other things I can do and want one. I keep having this desire to buy Medieval on the PSN, but I know it would get played much more on my PSP during roadtrips and whatnot.


I will probably be getting this sometime in the next year. Hopefully there will be a more exciting bundle available by then.


EDIT: Does anyone know if the remote play will also access my media share files?
 
There isn't any games for it though... even then, I HAVE to carry around those stupid UMD disks.

There's my ipod video, laptop, and 360. Well and PS2 and PS3 if needed.
 
Sadly, Loco Roco is still the only game out of those I'd be interested in because of it's creativity. So, I can't justify getting it just for that.

Believe me I'd like to get a PSP but there are too many reason not to.

Probably the biggest disappointment around when GT4 came out was that GT4p never went anywhere.

That is the reason why I don't have one yet, but now that I have a PS3 I see its possibilities.
 
When a system like the 360 has much more better games, I'd happily carry that around then a PSP. It's been that way for a while now. I even bought a portable DVD player just for this purpose.
