Thanks for watching and verifying my quali run. I am very satisfied with my lap despite knowing that I left a tenth or two on the table with a small hiccup through the first Lesmo.
I was hoping that I would be able to outqualify Tony, seeing as his GT-R has 120KG of "rewards" weight, but after jumping into the car last night and turning my first laps at Monza in a GT500 I was only able to muster a 46.1. I was a even more disheartened after Welsh joined my lounge and quickly turned a 45.2 after only a handful of laps. I knew the GT-R was going to struggle here but seeing Tony and Dom's times (with ballast) I really thought that I would be more competitive with Monza's simplistic layout. I knew the limiting factor was the driver so I decided a 46.1-46.5 was the best I should hope for and to get on with my run.
I told Litchi I would be ready to make my run in five minutes, made some final tweaks to the gear ratios and went back on track for one final mock qualifying run. I usually never look at my splits when hot lapping because I tend to lose focus (plus the splits at Monza are both in important braking zones) so when I crossed the line on lap 3 of my mock run and saw 45.7 I did a double take and asked myself WTF? I did one more lap to see if it was a fluke but another 45.7 popped up as I crossed the line.
Now I know that a 45.7 isn't lightening fast, Tony would probably run mid 44s with his GT-R if it weren't so fat, but this is the first time I have participated in a Super GT series with most of my previous efforts focusing on "small bore" racing. It has been a challenge for me to learn the necessary throttle control to safely and consistently pilot one of these beasts as I am used to the "go" pedal simply being an on/off switch. That is why I am so elated with my 45.6 and that is why I love PURE JGTS. Now if I could only find more time to practice (and talent) I might be able to win a race.
