question for surround headset users

I just bought a pair of Turtle beach X41's. Those of you that have this headset (or something similar) - how much surround sound do you hear in the game? I can only hear my car - I don't hear anyone else around me.

I'm fairly certain it is working b/c even when you are moving around in the menu you can hear the effects. I just don't notice when I'm driving.

Edit: maybe I'll try it on GT5 and see if it works

if you have a game like call of duty or something similar you can test it through that rather easily. Just stay still and you should be able to hear footsteps in the direction they are coming from. I used to play gt5 alot with my Tritton Ax720's but i dont really remember how well the surround sound seemed on that, but i dont remember it standing out to me to be honest.

I changed it to default (instead of engine) and changed the setting from tv to home theater. I'm not sure there is much difference but I still like it.

Thanks all for suggestions.

Mine work fine, not as good as my real home theatre but decent enough, can hear, behind left and right. Sound quality is poor, but for the price not bad.

I have a set of stereo, MW3 edition headphones and I can tell whether something is front/back and left/right. I would say 5.1 is not needed. Even when playing BF3, I can tell where the shots/steps are coming from.

Does the TB x41 have the same sound quality as the xp500? I know the xp500 offers wireless mic for Xbox but is that the only difference? Does it have the same drivers in the cans?

I'm going to answer my own question. I emailed customer support at Turtle Beach. Here's a copy -

Question to support:

I'm choosing between the X41 and the XP500.

1. Is there any difference in the actual drivers on the headphones?
2. Is the sound quality different?

Their answer:

The speaker/drivers are the same size.
The sound quality will be the same, as they both use the same kind of dolby digital for surround sound.

For any headphone fans - I did a comparison playing a dvd audio demo disk of three pairs of headphones.

1. Turtle Beach X41
2. Sennheiser HD 280 Pro
3. JVC RX900

The little decoder box also simulates surround sound on the headphone jack. I wanted to rate and compare their overal sound quality and immersion

My results are as follows: The HD 280 pro had the best overall sound quality - especially for voices. However the X41's had better immersion and surround effects. I was listening to jazz and it felt like the snare was behind me. The X41 were also the most comfortable - the cable on the 280's barely reached from the decoder to my couch.
