questions about car pronunciation?

My dad & I always argue about the pronunciation of Audi. When ever I see an Audi on the street I always point out that it's an aw-dy & he always says that it's an out-y. He thinks the German pronunciation is correct. Also, does anyone know how to pronounce Countach? I swear that I've heard it pronounced 4 different ways.

First, what do you guys think is more correct? To pronounce the name a car by what country it is manufacturer is from. Or, to pronounce the name of a car by what language you speak.

I'm not done yet. What about the Lamborghini Gallardo? I pronounce it Ga-lard-ow & but my friend insists the proper "Italian" way to pronounce it is Gee-yard-ow. Don't worry, I have plenty more questions.

TheCracker
Gai-yardo

That's how I've always heard it, and pronounce it.

For me, the one that seems to be most varied is Celica. Half the people I know say "sell-ee-ka", while the other half say "sell-ick-a".

FYI, my German friend pronounces Audi like this: Ow-oo-Dee. He said "just imagine Arnold saying it and that'd be about right".

scion.....Iwhe I first read it, I would say ski-on...then I heard a radio add...sigh-on.

I now feel like less of an idiot.

I say:

Audi: awww - deee
Gallardo: gul-ard-oh
Celica: cell-eek-ah
porsche: poor-shu
countach: coon - tawsh

Porsche - "Porsh"

Gallardo - "Gay-ardo"

Audi - "Ou*-di" *As in "ouch".

Countach - "Coon-tach*" *'ch' as in a gutteral "g".

Mazda - I have heard Americans pronounce it "Mahz dah", when it should probably be 'Maz-der'.

I'll ask the german foreign exhange student living wtih my parents about Audi and Porsche... Cause I know the e at the end of Porsche adds an "eh" or "ah" sound at the end, I swear...

Celica - she-ri-ka. Sell-i-ka? That's hard to say!

Mazda - maz-da.

240SX - Shi-ru-bi-a :D

Here's one nobody gets. Altezza. all-tet-za. The zz is like the zz in pizza.

Scion - sigh-on

Gallardo - gal-lard-oh. The ll makes a ya sound in spanish, not italian.

Murcielago - mercy-a-log-oh

Murcielago - mercy-a-log-oh

<loud buzzer sound!>

Gallardo and Murcielago are names for famous Spanish Bulls. Ergo they follow the Spanish convention of pronounciation - ll = ya and ci = tha 👍

Koenigsegg - "Koo-nig-sech" again with the 'ch' being a gutteral 'g'.

Owwie. I hurt myself with that gutteral 'g', perhaps I was trying too hard. :) Actually, I can't believe I was pronouncing that right, every other car in this thread I was pronouncing wrong.

ShobThaBob
Porsche = Poor-sha

Correct, its the family name and as such that pronunciation should be used.

Porsche dealer staff in the UK have to use the correct pronunciation as they will fail dealer standards if they use the wrong one on a mystery shop.

Countach - "Coon-tash" (pronounce the "oo" in "coon" as you would "book")

That's to my untrained eye. Nick, you'll get no straight answers as to pronounciation out of us, we're all too busy arguing over the pronounciation of the cars. :lol:

In the meantime, try spelling "pronounciation" right. :P

Damn, I came in this thread with that little diamond of information nkowing I could use it, but you beat me too it. THe ci is th in a few areas in S. America so I;m pretty sure it is still a ci sound.

How about touregg? That one isn't too bad, tour-egg. The worst I have ever heard someone mess up was calling mayback macbeth.

I pronounce them

Murcielago= Moor-chi-el-agoh
Audi=Oww-dee
Celica= Sell-ee-ka
Porsche= Porsh

I hear people pronouncing Jaguar as "Jag-war". Tsk.

Oh, so the current Lambos are meant to be pronounced as spanish? I'll accept that, I guess when i'd heard them said in italian, they were being mispronounced.

I say:

Koenigsegg- Koh-ay-Nig-Seg (sounds cool)
Porsche - porsh-a
Gallardo - Gai-yard-oh
Murcielago - Mercy-a-lago (I know it's mer-chee-a-lago, but I got used to saying it like I do now and can't change)
Audi- Ow-dee
Renault - Ren-all
Citroen - Cit-chrin
Countach - coon-tash
BMW- Bee-Em-double-you

Porsche - Porsh
Murcielago - (roughly) Moor-syeh-lah-go
Jaguar - "Jag-oo-ar" or "Jag-wahr"
Gallardo - Gah-yar-do
Audi - Ow-dee
Countach - "Kown-tash" or "Koon-tash"
Fiat - "Fee-aht" or "F-yaht"
