Questions about rolling starts and pitstops...

In response to the OT, GT has grid starts to try make things a little less chaotic going into the first corner.

Its why beginner and intermediate races have rolling starts, but expert races have grid starts. I guess it's to ease new players into the series gently.
That makes no sense.

Grid starts are easier than rolling starts. Its far more easier to overtake and get in a decent position, instead of being stuck at 16th place and 15 seconds behind the leader. So why would they be absent in beginner races but present in expert?

Pits should be the same as GT4.
I dont see what people are suggesting possible with a steering wheel.
Rolling starts should be an option in the private room.If the host wants it or not its there choice and when your searching for a room you should be able to see the guidelines of the room before you enter.

Why not have a complete formation lap? Heating up the tires and brakes, building up the adrenaline towards the straight.

Yeah - a 1 lap race around the Nordschleife would be great fun if we trundled around for 15 minutes first wouldn't it!

I agree with the pit lane limit idea - hold down R2 as a limiter, drive through penalty for speeding.

Plus your pitstop could be "perfect" if you stop on your marks correctly, or "+1sec" if you stop short as your crew has to shuffle back slightly.

Obviously there'll be a big delay if you knock anyone over.

Unfortunately this could be abused by a bloodthirsty player who chooses to drive through a straight pitlane at 350kmph in his/her group C prototype when it is full of pitcrews!

If you got close to the car in front to gain an advantage in a real life rolling start you'd be given a stop go penalty or worse. I don't see why you would want to be allowed to do that tbh, even if the game allowed it it'd be no better than wall riding or cutting corners to gain an unfair advantage.

Are you sure about that?

I remember in F1 when Juan Pablo Montoya was driving for Williams, and when ever they restarted a race after the safety car had been out, he was always right on the rear wing of the car in front as he crossed the line. I don't remember him ever getting a penalty for doing that.

If my memory is right he was the only driver who was any good at rolling starts because he was used to them in Indy cars (or whatever it was called back then).

You are allowed to get as close as you want as long as you don't pass before the start line.

It always surprises me in F1 when drivers allow gaps to appear when the safety car in on its in lap.

A few fair assumptions: the PP system will be gone for GT5. It will have a much more in-depth tuning system, more like GT3/4. There will be both rolling and standing starts, as it has been in previous GT games.

As for pitting, you will probably see the fuel- and tyre gauges on your screen, so you´ll know for yourself when it´s time to pit, either for fuel or tyres or both. This opens up for strategies, such as less fuel in the tank. I did that all the time in GT4, matching fuel and tyres to end at the same time.
I would however like a few things; the possibility to save, to change oil and change your setup. An oilchange could add 10 secs on you pitstop time, and a setup change another 5.

That is the WORST idea ever, I would love to see the person that can do a ten second oil change. Yes I know that is about how long it took in GT4, but that wasn't during a race. If they allow oil changes in race they should at at least 5 minutes.

Well, you name me a race then where the drivers don't have to complete a lap after leaving the pits, in order to take their position on the grid.

They won't do that, anyone using the cockpit view will have a great disadvantage over someone using the chase view.

Well, oilchanges would only be needed during longer enduranceraces. Either that, or allow the cars to run for a longer period of time before you have to change the oil. During a 24hrs event, the oil is really spent in GT4.

Besides, 5 minutes could be worthwhile, if damage has occured. And there is another idea; allow for repairs during pitstops!

The pitting should be made realisticly this time around, like other "real" sims, where you have to manually keep the pit road speed limit and search for your crew. In other words, make your pit stop completely on your own, with no help from the computer.

What I absolutely don't want in GT5, is the pitting as it was in GT4, were the pit stop is done automaticly and you have no choice but to see the exterior of the car.

There should be an option to let you choose between these two styles though.

It's a little hard to choose your tyres and setting choices when you have to drive the car through the pits, don't get me wrong I also want to drive the pits but we will need a way to preset the setup before reaching the pit box.

I'd go even further with the rolling starts idea:

That would be the most ideal but it would also be nice if races actually start from the pit- and then you would drive to the starting line. But the one I'm hoping the most is that in GT5, PD will get rid of the "START" or "GO" on the screen and either leave the indication to audio cues (like Codemasters' GRID and most other racing sim) or use the red to green light indicator (imposed discretely onto the screen). Having the word "START" or "GO" is a little too much on the arcade side.

Have you never raced expert online?
Unless you get a decent start off the line, the first corner is manic, with up to 16 cars fighting for one line, cars ghosting randomly then coming back and laggy cars appearing.

Yeah, that's the catch. Perhaps setting up pit stop strategy before starting the race? Or having an option in the pause menu where you can decide what to be done during the pit stop, but that would obviously only work offline.

I don't know. It's just that it feels so arcadish the way it currently is. :indiff:

Yeah running into the pit lane at 200mph only to have the computer slow you down with no consequence is rediculous. In high speed oval racing getting the car slowed down for pit lane is crucial and very hard

I did a fake pit stop in GT5P the other day and the realism felt great. If the computer drives for you down pit lane that takes you out of the game.

As for pit options maybe what tires you want, how much fuel etc etc can be adjusted in the real time R3 menu. I'm talking about the same menu that has TC, ABS, brake bias, etc all adjustable in real time.

The options should be

- Front tires and what compound
- Rear Tires and what compound
- fuel?
fix damage?
any adjustments to tire pressure, wing, etc
