I haven't really seen the newer tech around in this market, I just hope they can continue to push the same great image quality and depth you get with a Panny plasma screen...

:( The Pioneer Kuro was one of my favourite tellys, especially when they discotinued them and we could sell them above full retail price :D

CRT beats them all shame they didn't make a lot more HD capable sets oled comes close but still has lag

What shop is this? I will avoid it like the plague if they price hike

I couldn't disagree more. My plasma blows away my 3 LCDs in terms of picture quality. Granted I haven't looked at any brand new LCDs besides walking past the tiny 70 inchers at Costco, but the ones I have don't compare at all.
And prices? Are we comparing a super expensive plasma to a super cheap LCD?

Thing with LCD screens they use a few types of Lcd TFT - Lcd LED maybe a few other.

My led logic tv in my bedroom is crisp as anything only cost £100 now my £1800 sharp tv is no we're near as good until you put a movie on .... Winds me up

I have a Plasma (LG), still the best picture and motion quality out there (all the benefits of CRT like soft colours, refresh rates etc) So far nothing other than OLED has come close to the image and even then they all have that horrible soap opera effect which I cannot see how people can watch movies like that.

The later Plasma's were not so much of a power hog, about comparable to a box TV half it's size on full tilt. Also they weren't very thick and didn't need cooling fan's. However there was lot's of temporary image retention and always the worry of burn in plus they weigh a ton.

I guess it was inevitable that the superior technology would eventually die in favour of the cheaper more consumer friendly option. I reckon with more Plasma R&D it could have eventually gotten rid of its faults.

Pioneer Kuro Elite's were possibly the best TV ever looked, the Sharp Elite's which followed were pretty darn good also but I can't imagine how amazing the tech would look now if they had stuck at it.

Hang onto them trust me, I do a lot of retro gaming and you do not know how hard it is too get a decent Crt these days. There is no way I would hook up a snes to a HDTV they look absolute garbage now stick it on a crt and I could still be a child sat in my bedroom battling on sf2 same exact experience... Not sure how long it will take for 4k to dominate like HDTV is now but playing our systems now on a 4k tv is just going to be gash 1080p upscaled to 4k ... No thanks. Lucky HDTVs are slim so you could hide it anywhere in your home I have 2 crt's in storage they take up a good chunk of my attic space.

All are Vizio. The plasma was $900... 6 years ago? The LCDs range from 19" to 32" and were between $250 and $500, if memory serves. So no, no super expensive units on either end.

That's not to say I don't like the image quality of the LCDs. They just don't stand a chance against the plasma.

On the subject of image quality, if I was mega super anal about needing outstanding IQ, I'd downsize my projector image to shrink the size of the pixels but I'll happily trade a bit of IQ for more immersion. :)

If only Pioneer actually released their gen 10 with zero black level (prototype only). It would have sold just as few or less than gen 9 did, but at least I would own one.

What I do own is 5 crt tvs (including three of the Sonys with the highest resolution ever produced in a crt), and 5 plasmas. I hold on to the pinnacle products from each era..... I do not own an lcd.

You mean this one? so much awesome... it's a pity it never entered production because it was the best TV ever made. Probably would have cost many ten's of thousands of dollars.

That's a shame, I always like my plasma more than my LCD. I think part of the reason plasma sales dropped is because so many people have the wrong idea about them. They think LCD is better because it's newer, plasma cost too much to run (only ~$20 more a year from my research) and people worry too much about burn in. I've done some 2 hour plus races on iRacing and none of the HUD has ever burnt in.

No. LCDs have come a long way, but my Panasonic Plasma still looks better to me than a lot of LCD displays. Plasma was always superior in motion and calibrates better. If they weren't big, heavy, and hot, I wouldn't know why anyone would go LCD.

I had a plasma once and once it got a bit older the colours went really funny. Never had that on an LCD.

Besides. CRT FTW.

So much misinformation from salesmen has killed it off, telling customers they should steer clear of Plasma saying stuff like the gas goes after like 3 years and it will bankrupt you due to power use. Also that you can't watch it in the daytime  never seemed to bother people for 100 years of CRT which has the same reflection and brightness issue.

The latest ones aren't big or hot, mine is only about 1/2 inch thick and has no fans... but they are heavy due to the huge double glazed glass. As the Pioneer prototype showed they could be as thin as current LCD's and that was many years ago.

Can we get a pic of your CRTs and model numbers I have a serious fetish with the crt's love to see them

Burn-in.

Like it or not, it is an inherent flaw of the technology and cannot be done away with. The myth that manufacturers had done away with the issue was just that... A myth. I've been to people's homes who have sworn up & down that their plasma had no burn-in, but pull up a plain grey or blue screen and sure enough it was there and painfully obvious. Usually sidebars. These weren't old displays either. I have seen it within the last year and on sets as new as 6-months old.

Cant you fix the burn in by playing the static from the Big Bang for a few hours used to be the case for arcade machines and crt's
