Boss 302 Challenge Cup Car Details - Fridays

Car: 1970 Ford Mustang Trans-Cammer by Grand Touring Garage = Tuning Prohibited (oil change allowed, chassis reinforcement allowed, brake bias adjustment allowed), Sports Hard tyres (NB This car is the closest in appearance to the Boss 302 driven by Frank in 1970). Stock specs of the car after oil change are 552PP / 1721KG / 648BHP.

Team Challenge:
Cars will be painted in a choice of country colours. Teams will comprise a minimum of one and maximum of three drivers. The highest score from the Feature Race counts towards the Team Challenge. The colours are the same as those used previously in our Friday Rockets Championship. I will assume that drivers are competing in the same colours and race numbers as previously unless informed that you wish to change.

A 1/43 scale replica of the Frank Gardner BSCC (now known as BTCC) winning Ford Escort Twin Cam Mark One will be awarded to the winner of the Historic BSCC 3 (Wednesday) championship Class M. The same prize will be awarded to the Champion of Class R in the same championship. The same prize will also be awarded to the Champion of the BOSS 302 (Friday) championship.

No more than one prize can be awarded per person, therefore if the winner of BOSS 302 (Friday) is also the winner of Historic BSCC 3 (Wednesday) Class M or R, the prize for BOSS 302 will be awarded to the Vice-Champion. If the Vice-Champion is also the winner of Historic BSCC 3 (Wednesday) Class M or R the prize will be awarded to the third placed driver in BOSS 302.

If any other prizes are available these will be issued by Sick Cylinder to competitors in either championship at his sole discretion.

Places on the grid for the Historic BSCC 3 (Wednesday) championship have been reserved for competitors in the Wednesday Cobra championship. Places on the grid for the BOSS 302 (Friday) championship have been reserved for competitors in the Friday Rockets championship.

Note: The track list has been be revised and the number of custom tracks has been cut from 6 to 2. Rounds with a custom track will have no qualification race, but will feature an extended practise session instead (NB we have found that the PS3 / PSN struggles to load custom tracks for a second race).

Dear Racers - I have produced the above poster to help our races and photos look more retro and therefore realistic.

In future when racing in one of my championships please wear one of the six outfits shown above.

The above poster will also be reproduced at the start of each championship thread.

If anyone is not sure how to obtain the outfits in the game or how to get your avatar to wear them, I will be happy to help.
Note - it is quick and easy to change outfits if you need to wear a different one for other series.

Frank Gardner - Three Time BSCC (BTCC) Champion

Before signing for Ford, Frank was already a household name in motor racing having driven single seaters in Formula 1 and 2, sports cars, prototypes and saloons. Walter Hayes (Ford) told Frank to forget Formula 1 and whatever he was offered, Ford would double it and provide free worldwide travel. He took back to back BSCC titles In 1967 and 1968 first in a Ford Falcon Sprint and then in the new Ford Escort twin Cam, both for the Alan Mann team. Ford stopped funding the Alan Mann team at the end of 1969 as it was cutting back on its motorsport activities, so Frank set up his own team for the final year of his Ford contract in 1970. Walter Hayes invited him to come over to the USA to choose a car. Frank selected a Bud Moore prepared Mustang Boss 302 Trans Am race car which he re-engineered to FIA Group 2 specifications and took to second place in the British Championship. Frank then switched to Chevrolet and took his third BSCC title in a Camaro in 1973.

Top picture Frank in the 4.7 litre Ford Falcon Sprint. Middle for 1968 he switched to the Ford Escort Twin Cam. The Group 5 BSCC rules were very liberal in 1968 and allowed an increase in the number of valves so the Escort ran a 1600cc Ford Cosworth FVA 16 valve lump producing 210bhp (it was classified as supercharged due to fitment of an electric fan in the inlet!) - less than half the power of the Falcons driven by Roy Pierpoint (fuel injected) and Sir Gawaine Baillie (supercharged). For 1969 tightening of the regulations meant the Escort had to use its original Lotus twin cam 8 valve engine.

Bottom picture after switching to Chevrolet Frank took his third title in 1973 in a Group 2 Camaro.

Top in the Willment Lotus 30 and behind and to our left the famous Willment Cobra Coupe which Frank helped engineer and develop. Middle left driving for Ford at Le Mans. Middle right he was a regular competitor in the Tasman series against Jim Clark and Graham Hill. Bottom a misleading model kit box which features John Surtees in his championship winning year leading Graham Hill; in 1964 Frank was driving a Brabham BT10 in Formula 1 for John Willment, but for those with eagle eyes the box lists some of Frank's achievements (many incorrectly!).

If you have the time watch this great film of highlights of the 1966 Tasman Series featuring Frank Gardner, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Kevin Bartlett and many other famous names. Frank does double duty driving his Brabham in the single seater events and an Alfa Romeo GTA in the saloon car races.

GT Planet OLR Rules
All drivers are expected to follow the GT Planet OLR Rules - in addition the following rules will apply.

Rules
Races will be held each Friday starting at 20:30 GMT. (During the period of daylight saving time known as British Summer Time or BST - March to October - meetings will be held one hour earlier).

The race meeting will last for slightly less than one hour. If the meeting is over running (perhaps due to disconnections) the Host may shorten the Feature Race as appropriate.

The room will open at 20:25. Race 1 will be a 10 minute qualification race and will commence as soon as possible after 20:35. Race 2 will be the Feature Race and will be for 25 minutes. The grid order will be based on the previous race finish. If drivers miss the qualification race they will start at the back of the grid. Championship points are only awarded for finishing positions achieved in the Feature Race. Drivers who were disconnected / left the room during the feature race will be credited with a last place finish.

Each race will be on the tyres specified with no driving aids except optional ABS (which most drivers set to 1), edge grip will be real and race starts will have false start check. Penalties off, damage light, slipstream real, no boost. Driving Line will be available if required.

Some of us have been racing every Sunday since the beginning of GT5 i.e. several years (we switched to racing on Wednesdays and Fridays due to problems with disconnections at Weekends). All drivers are expected to drive in a considerate, careful and mature manner - this includes always driving in the correct direction and no doughnuts (donuts). All ability levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced.

All Drivers are expected to follow the hosts instructions regarding the race meeting at all times or in his absence the instructions of the Deputy Host (Note, Deputy Hosts include @LexLathor and @IfAndOr).

The Cars: - No wings or spoilers can be added unless specifically stated.

Paint should be in age appropriate colours e.g. solid or metallic only, no chrome or polarized finishes.

Wheels should be age appropriate for the car and in standard size - if wheels or colour are inappropriate the host will request that the driver change them before the next round (on this car standard wheels should not be used). If the type of wheels and / or their colour is specified in the thread, this guidance must be followed.

Where possible bumpers should be removed in order to enhance the race look - note do not do this if tuning is prohibited.

Bonnets if lightened must be in body paint colour unless specifically stated - note, do not do this if tuning is prohibited.

Any tuning is allowed subject to specified PP, minimum weight and maximum power limits.

Race numbers must be fitted (if the vehicle allows for this) and must be Type A, Font A.

Signups
Please sign up by sending a message to Sick_Cylinder via your Playstation 3 or via GTPlanet. Note: Drivers already competing in the current championships hosted by Sick Cylinder are automatically signed up.

There will be up to 14 regular drivers in the championships plus up to 8 reserve drivers. Any sign ups beyond this number will go on a waiting list.

Absence / Unable to attend races
If you know that you will be unable to attend certain rounds please inform the Host. It may then be possible for a reserve driver to fill your slot on the grid. If you no longer wish to participate in the championship the first reserve driver will fill your grid slot and will drive the same type of car.

Reserve Drivers
If the grid is full you can sign up to be a reserve driver. You will be able to race when a regular driver is absent and the grid therefore has a vacant slot. If a regular driver leaves the championship you will be offered that drivers slot and will become a regular driver using the same type of car as the original regular driver was using (or was scheduled to use).

If a driver is absent for three consecutive rounds he will be deemed to have become a reserve driver.

Questions
If you have questions regarding the races or comments about quality of driving or other problems etc, please raise these after the meeting with the Host Sick_Cylinder via your Playstation 3 or via the conversation facility on GTPlanet. Please do not raise complaints during the meeting as this is very distracting for other drivers. Also it is best to raise points with a cool head after having had time to consider the matter.

It is best to reserve postings on this thread for race photos, race reports, links to good tunes or other helpful tips on cars in the car list. Posts about motorsport, cars, motorbikes or other motorised vehicles are also welcome if they are likely to be of interest to GT Planet readers.

Room Etiquette / Voice chat - this section only applies when voice is enabled (Currently we are running with voice disabled as this appears to reduce disconnections by allowing more bandwidth for racing).

If drivers speak to each other they should use the PSN name even if they know the drivers real name. All conversations should be in English. Please refrain from talking during races or qualifying as some drivers may find it distracting.

If Voice chat is enabled during races, the purpose of the voice chat is to enable the leaders to indicate when they are approaching and about to lap another driver. The horn can also be used by the lead driver when about to lap another driver. No offence should be taken by the use of the horn - in this case it is purely a warning signal. To avoid confusion the horn should not be used at any other time including while stationary on the grid. Some drivers do not have microphones or their spoken English may not be good - this does not matter and they will not be discriminated against - they can use the horn to warn the driver in front that they are about to lap. Use of the horn for any purpose other than that outlined may result in a warning and or penalty.

Voice chat will also enable a driver to indicate if he intends to carry out a pitstop. The procedure will be that at the start of the lap on which he intends to pit, the driver will say his name and that he is pitting at the end of this lap. He will also say that he is about to pit when approaching the pit lane. The driver will also announce when he has left the pits and rejoined the track - while doing so he will endeavour to stay inside the white lines when rejoining.

For example in my case on crossing the start line I would say "Sick pitting on lap ten". On approaching the pits I would say "Sick entering Pits". On rejoining the race I would say "Sick rejoining race". If a driver is about to be lapped, he should hold a steady course and if possible momentarily lift off the throttle so that the faster driver can pass.

Race Room Settings
Start type = Grid start with false start check (this means hold car still with brake until start)
Grid order = Fastest First (this means start in order of practise lap time)
Boost = off
Penalty = Off
Tyre / Fuel depletion = normal (try to avoid drifting round corners)
Grip reduction on track edge = real
Minimum number of pit stops = as specified (Note we are currently not using pit stops as we have suffered from the "Trapped in Pits Bug" on many occasions).
Require tyre type change = off (this means you can stick with one grade of tyre)
Race finish delay = 180 seconds (there will be a wide range of abilities of driver) - NB this is not used when Endurance is selected.
Visible damage = off (this prevents spoiling the look of photos)
Mechanical damage = Light (if you have a crash the damage will repair itself)
Slipstream strength = Real
Tyre = As specified
Nitrous = Prohibited
Vehicle Tuning = No Limit (but check BHP, KG and PP limits) Or Prohibited as specified.
Skid recovery force = prohibited
Active steering = prohibited
Active stability management = prohibited
Driving line = available if required
Traction control = prohibited
ABS = available if required (if racing without ABS, please take extra care not to skid into other cars)

PIT STOPS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Note pit stops not currently in use.
There will be one compulsory pitstop to change tyres in races exceeding 20 minutes in duration unless stated otherwise. If pit stops are in use tyre wear will be set to fast.

If you fail to take a pitstop the game will automatically give you a 50 second penalty.

You can take your pitstop on any lap apart from the last lap.

If you take your pitstop on the last lap the host will give you a 30 second penalty (Unfortunately this is necessary due to an error in GT6 which fails to conduct a proper pitstop on the final lap).

No pit stops will be held if the track does not have a pit lane (e.g. London) and tyre wear will be slowed from fast to normal.

Championship points
We will use the MotoGP points system as we have in previous championships as this awards points down to 15th place as follows and offers an appropriate differentiation for higher placings:

1st = 25
2nd = 20
3rd = 16
4th = 13
5th = 11
6th = 10
7th = 9
8th = 8
9th = 7
10th = 6
11th = 5
12th = 4
13th = 3
14th = 2
15th = 1
16th = 0

In the event of a points tie the champion will be the driver with the greatest number of 1st place finishes - if this is tied, it will be the driver with the greatest number of second place finishes etc. and so on. The drivers single lowest score will be deducted before the final scores are declared. If a Country / Team championship is running this will have no dropped scores. Maximum team size is three drivers. Only the highest position counts towards the Team championship - teams can therefore have a minimum of one driver and a maximum of three drivers.

Bad internet connections / PS3 Problems
If the Host is disconnected by an internet or PS3 problem, the Deputy Host (@LexLathor will Host the meeting.

If a driver leaves a race after it has started due to an internet or PS3 problem the Host will award points equivalent to a last place finish in the race.

If a driver has a bad connection such that his or her car is lagging excessively and unpredictably the Host may ask the driver to leave and re-enter the room.

To reduce the risk of bad internet connections all drivers should empty their system cache before the race meeting starts and before re-entering the room if disconnected.

Practise - A series of practise / test races will be held during Round 0 - these are not part of the championship, but are an opportunity to check room settings and test cars. After the championships have been completed another practise / test meeting / Round 0 will be held before the start of the next championship.

I hope Derek is able to join us for both series. Some of the people who will be racing in the new series will be very fast so I expect to be even further back in the results than normal, but that doesn't matter as long as the racing is good. Hopefully Derek is not another of those alien fast guys - we need more non-aliens as well!

Glad to know you're in Zeus - note that 13 is taken by Flaco, 31 is taken by Rich. 33 and 11 are also taken and 1 is reserved, but you could have number 3 is you want.

Everyone please note - the races are in the 1970 Mustang Trans Cammer by the Grand Touring Garage. This car looks the most like the car which Frank Gardner raced in the UK. I am keeping the Friday Championship tuning prohibited because this is popular and saves time - some of the guys want to be able to just grab a car when they get in from work on a Friday and not worry about gearing or suspension etc. I did test the current Ford Boss 302, but it had strange gearing and was insufficiently exciting to drive. I also tested the Shelby GT500 which was a lot better, but took us too far from the Frank Gardner Tribute / Boss 302 concept. I settled on the Mustang Trans Cammer and apologise in advance for the gearbox - it effectively has a six speed gearbox with fifth gear missing - acceleration is good in the lower gears, but you will need to take it to the limiter in fourth before selecting fifth (top gear) as there is a huge gap. The car is very heavy and sports hard tyres were the least grippy tyres which still gave reasonable stopping distances - the car was too difficult to keep on the track on comforts - anything more than sports hard and the car did not feel alive.

I just took it for a few laps for the first time and it's impossible to turn right with any accuracy because there a Giant hood scoop in the way - you can't see anything past it!

After about 4 or 5 laps on silverstone I gave up, I couldn't turn right and stay on the track!

I tried bonnet view (in desperation) and I managed to complete a few laps but I can't seem to save a slide at all. It's really weird - in cockpit view I had no trouble saving slides, I just couldn't see an apex on the right side, it made me feel like a tourist lost and looking for road signs while driving.

I'm suddenly feeling quite nervous about this series...

Try some more practise in both views - it does have the hood scoop, but it has an awesome interior with lots of dials and the safety netting over the side window which looks great. It should be ok on tracks which you know well - perhaps try using the driving line on the custom tracks. Maybe altering the width of the view (normal, narrow, extra narrow) would help?

The Friday Series normally attracts a few more entries and comments than the Wednesday Series so I thought I would post here some photos of the Ferrari's on Father's Day Show held last Sunday at Hever Castle. The special guest was 1964 F1 World Champion (for Ferrari) John Surtees who brought along part of his collection of Grand prix motorcycles and his absolutely gorgeous Lola T70 - which he allowed lots of children to sit in! He remains the only man to have won the World Championship on two and four wheels.

Yes - they had protective covers over the ends, but last summer John took a bigger selection of his bikes to the Classic Bike Festival at Aylesford Priory and started all his old Grand Prix machines - the loudness of the open pipes on the MV's was incredible and the sound - especially of the 500 triple was just fantastic. I don't know what the Monk's thought, but hopefully John will be back at Aylesford later this summer.

I agree with @tarnheld that I think it'll prove to be an interesting series. Once you get used to the car, its gearing and get the braking sorted out, it's quite fun to throw around.
(I'm still trying to squeeze another gear into the box unnoticed though.)

The Test Round was very successful and unlike the Wednesday Test Round we had relatively few problems with invisible cars etc. The Trial Mountain race was particularly enjoyable. I found that sometimes the huge gap between 4th and 5th gear was helpful - when accelerating around a medium speed corner it kept the power down and reduced the risk of spinning out. The car felt nice and lively on the Sports Hard tyres and they looked great in a wide range of colours - everyone please make sure that you add your race number before Round 1 - Type A, Font A only please (note Type B adds a black ring around the roundel which does not photograph well so please avoid this and stick to type A).

I don't know if anyone is able to get to Brands Hatch this weekend, but if so drop me a message - I will be attending with fellow GT Planet member Mook. It is one of the biggest and best Historic race meetings in the South East (UK) - the Brands Hatch Super Prix, 50th Anniversary meeting of the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC). I am particularly looking forward to the Bybox Pre 1966 Saloon races - I will be putting photos of those cars on the Historic BSCC 3 thread. The entry list includes: Mustang, Falcon, Galaxie, Anglia, Cortina, Mini, Imp, Alfa and Triumph.

There are some very rare cars racing which hopefully I can photograph. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the De Tomaso Mangusta, Bizzarini 5300 and the Kellison J4R. Here are a couple of publicity posters:

Not so sure the wife would approve If, and my neck would probably snap.

Anyway, the good news is that we've rescheduled our departure for 5:00am Saturday morning, so I can join in tonight. However, I hope my Mexican friends are not going to expect too much, the intricacies of Mount Panorama are a complete mystery to me, and I've put in sod-all practice. I'll be 'Mr Slow Buttermilk' tonight I'm afraid.
