Rap: Music or not?Music

Curren$y is featured in Fat Raps, the song I posted in the previous comment 👍. Great song, he's a good rapper.

yea i know one of my favorite songs from his mixtapes... I have been following his career since his 2008 mixtape run. The beats that he picks are incredible 99.9% of the time, but i'm sure you already know that. lol.

I've been to a few of his shows... BluRoc festival was held in Brooklyn and he was backed by the same live band that did the music for Pilot talk 1/2 & 24HKS. More recently i caught him at the Jet Life tour in Manhattan for a great show. Spitta took the stage and was showered with like 20 doobies lol, i even met Nesby phips outside the venue (he produced the song "prioritize" among others).

That's pretty cool, if you can tell where I am by my location, you'll know that absolutely no one comes to perform here. Wiz Khalifa came and performed and was arrested for marijuana possession. So we know that no one will ever come back here again. :grumpy:

That must suck... Im spoiled because everybody comes to NYC, i didnt even think of it like that. I just caught Dom Kennedy at SOB's last week and he shut it downnnnn.

It's all good, as long as I got a computer and an iPod I'll be okay 👍.

Madvillain - Madvillainy
Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
Kanye West - College Dropout, Late Registration, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Eminem - Slim Shady LP, Marshall Mathers LP
Nujabes - Metaphorical Music

A short list to help you on your quest for musical enlightenment, OP.

Not music. Rap cd's deserve to be flushed down the toilet. Because you can't spell crap without rap in it.

Rap is a noise not music. Music is played by musicians on REAL instruments not made on a computer like rap is.

When someone drops MF Doom on you, you know that it has become srs biz yo!
To be honest maybe you should listen to undergroud rap than mainstream...cause there is a bigger atmosphere than your op other post seem to realize just sayin.

I myself listen to the birds chirping and wind rustling the leaves for music:sly:

EDIT: Actually music is a collection of notes that form beats that form sounds...whether it's a synth, or an acoustic guitar or electric guitar or a beat machine...it still has notation which is thus music that is the realistic version now the idealist would say music is dot dot dot "people playing instuments"
Truth is things aren't that simple all the time nor that black and white.

But it has no depth? It's still too false. Music comes from bands e.g. Muse, Foo Fighters, Billy Talent

That discounts every single artist in the world then, since every song goes through post production. Also, a rapper's voice is NOT made by a computer. It comes from the same place as every other singer. Being able to produce music using a computer is something that has made it much more accessible to the masses, which some might see as a bad thing but when it produces amazing work from artists like M83, Boards of Canada and Epic45 who combine instruments with synthesizers and computer software, I have no problem with that.

Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence.

That is the very definition of music. Rap is music. Whistling in the shower is music. Art is what the individual makes of it, and I happen to love rap music when it's done well.

I'm curious though; when people say 'rap is crap', what rap artists are they talking about? I'm willing to bet they've only heard the mainstream artists and not the real rappers who still rap about real life and not 'guns n bling'.

This is what rap and hip hop is all about for me:

I see where you are coming from and I know all music is post produced, its just when the original track is produced using computers, not instruments I find it takes away from the music and turns it more into a noise. This is just my opinion, I have a similar opinion towards pop music too

That's subjective though not fact...your stating an opinion but in truth music is only a collection of beats in reality. If we all here were to purely go off opinion I would simply say that the music you listen to has no depth and is commercialized garbage that isn't really music but more like brain washing anthems made by sell outs that play three chord progressions to make pay checks off the feeble minded masses. Ya see how I did that there.
I can't honestly say that cause I love muse, but I do think that about the other two, but no matter what I think it is still a form of music.

What about this then, a combination of real instruments and computers? Wait until at least 2 minutes in before making your mind up, as the track changes drastically.

I'm interested to hear about your opinion on pop music too.

Thanks! I'm a huge fan eagerly awaiting new stuff but judging by their Facebook updates, it's not going to happen any time soon. :( I love a lot of Electronica, especially IDM. M83, Epic45, The Album Leaf, BoC, Brian Eno etc. 👍

Any view on music is an opinion, mine is just quite strongly against rap/r&b in general although some I can listen to, generally when in collaborations with rock bands e.g. jay-z and linkin park's songs. And Muse are far from three chord progressions and you know that  I just find rap doesn't come to me as a form of music, as I feel music should be fun to listen to and rap as a whole is not to me.

Sadly there is a fine line between RAP and Hiphop

Serious question here: What about beatboxing? Using the voice to replicate instruments:

*LANGUAGE WARNING IN VIDEO*
This is pretty accurate:

EDIT: I actually love Indie and Rock music, before anyone has a go!

Yeah I do know that hence why I mentioned muse seperate from the other two you named. If Muse weren't more than three chord progressions I wouldn't use Matt Bellemy as a good reference for my guitar playing, just saying.

I've been waiting for DJ Shadow to put out something for a while myself and am still waiting, sitting on my hands so I know the feeling. Searching for great stuff beyond the commercialization is the hardest part to getting great music I think. @ Soloracer the simplest term for music is just a collection of sounds that are notes and/or beats. All the rest just boils down to opinion or more so what is good or bad music and what not opinions.

@LMScorvetteGT2 Matt bellamy is pretty unrivaled as a guitar player. And I see what your are saying about what music is

I wouldn't go that far, he's awesome don't get me wrong but he's like 6 or 8 on my list of guitarist I use to make myself better. John Frusciante, Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, Omar Rodriguez Lopez from Mars Volta, Josh Homme of QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures and Dan Aubacher of Black Keys. But that's just me and there are plenty of others I just named of the current modern day guys that I like.

Fair enough. Yes there is a lot of good guitarists around at the moment, I know you said you didn't like them but Ian D'sa from billy talent when he gets into the melodic bits and solos is good I feel. Hmm we've gotten a bit off topic now

Rap is certainly a more verbal art form than a musical one. Often the words carry more importance than the sounds. There's nothing wrong with that, but it fits my idea of music less because of it. However, it is still music, and is still an art-form as well. I don't listen to rap often, but when it is well written, I can at least appreciate its value.

My suggestion to anyone who hates rap/hiphop/pop/polka or any genre of music: Don't judge a song based on the category it's in, judge it on the song. 👍 I hope the people who hate rap are at least playing the videos posted in this thread. If not, you might want to pull your head out of your arse.

He is far from unrivaled. Muse lacks atmosphere.

As a self-titled metal head that loves all types of music... I do have a soft spot for some rap, or what ever you want to call it.
