The Vatican has officially recognized the state of Palestine in a new treaty.

The treaty, which was finalized Wednesday but still has to be signed, makes clear that the Holy See has switched its diplomatic relations from the Palestinian Liberation Organization to the state of Palestine.

The Vatican had welcomed the decision by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012 to recognize a Palestinian state. But the treaty is the first legal document negotiated between the Holy See and the Palestinian state and constitutes an official recognition.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is due to see Pope Francis on Saturday before the canonization of two new saints from the Holy Land a day later.

Religion to the rescue!

Only a couple days ago the Pope spoke out against the MIC and now this.

He'll be gone soon if he keeps it up.

The PLO effectively became the PA, which is the recognized government of Palestine. The Vatican recognizing Hamas? Man, that would be crazy. They did indeed recognize Palestine. You were right.

Thankfully, the Vatican, regardless of exactly when such recognition was made, recognizes the PLO, which did renounce violence as a means to resolve this unfortunate quagmire. Regardless of when the Vatican made formal recognition, I'm glad they did.

Guess what friends - The Holy See didn't just recognize Palestine.

They recognized Palestine three years ago.

But don't take my zionist word for it.

I guess that I have to bring the first bit of bias into the thread. This is nothing but a move to force Israel to accept a two state solution, which from the RCC's perspective, would work out because part of their proposal would have Jerusalem be an "international city" under no real form of government, like the Vatican.

Good luck convincing both sides to agree to that.

The only real point of contention is the Temple Mount. The Jews, the Muslims and the Catholics all want the city for various reasons, but it really all boils down to the Temple Mount. The Jews want it because that is the holiest site in Judaism, and eventually wants to build the Third Temple. The Muslims want it because it currently houses the second holiest site in Islam. Finally, the Pope wants it because of the historical significance in relation to the Crusades (the city was liberated from the Ottomans as part of the wars), and wants it to be the new headquarters of the Holy See.
