Just stupid.

That's the problem here... it's impossible in this case to prove criminal intent... or even mental unsuitability to raise children.

There are many sects that prohibit medical intervention either partially or outright... so, sadly, this case isn't really anything new...

What it does bring up is... whether anyone has the right to refuse treatment on behalf of another person. That's one thing that legislation may be possible to address. That adults cannot refuse treatment (where it will be provided at no expense to them) on behalf of their children if the children want it. That way, you preserve freedom of choice and religion without den ying the child their basic rights. (and i consider medical care... at least for minors... a basic right... I may be biased, being a shareholder in a hospital, though).
