RKM Motorsport - Tuned Tuners - May '13

Oi Roj, doess this mean that when I check my gift box when PSN is back on, I'll have a M3 CSL waiting for me?

When is PSN back on for you? I'll send the CSL when it is, because there's no point in me sending it early and setting my request days back.

Despite my being a VW fanboy and the Euro/JDM, econocar, hot-hatch rivalry with Honda, there have always been two cars I've liked from the Japanese manufacturer: the NSX (in spite of the Acura badge in the US) and the S2000. The S2000 has that timeless sports car shape; long nose, long doors, short deck. I consider it sort of a modern design evolution of another of my favorite cars, the FC RX-7, but without the flip up headlights.

Running stock it is an easy to drive car. It is stable on the brakes and the steering feels good. It is really pretty neutral. There is not any prominent under or oversteer if you don't badly miss on entry. Coming out you can find some slide in the rear but a gentle foot (or thumb) will keep things calm. And of course there is the exhaust note, very nice indeed. The biggest problem here I think is that it comes on comfort softs. The best one part purchase improvement would be sports tires, even hards. In my opinion that would sort things well enough out back to let you step on it harder through the exits. As is though it runs a 2'23.541".

The biggest downfall adding parts is that the exhaust note is now gone. Other than that it is still fantastic. The feel remains about the same but obviously with increased speed. Point it in a direction and it will go and stick. Most of the sliding has been tamed out back but will still show in the lower speed corners. Again, a bit of care will go a long way. It is easy to progress your skill with the car and lower your times. I ended up at 2'05.324".

The tune tightens things up. Again, still stable on the brakes. The first corner can be tricky coming off the straight but it will settle down by itself with little or no correction. As Roj says, this car can pick its line, which is a fantastic weapon to have in a race. With this kind of control there is nothing anyone can do to keep you back if you are faster in the corners, and most likely you will be. The stability and grip allow for some pretty insane cornering speeds by comparison. You'll still find some of that oversteer but you can either let it go and allow it to sort itself if you're looking to drift through corners and have fun or use a little counter to easily quell the slide. It did take me a while to get a faster lap than the parts mod. I believe this to be due to getting used to the gearing. Once I figured it out I was able to drop my ghost by three hundredths and then another seven on the next lap to 2'04.335".

There is probably more time I can find but I had to cut the session short due to time constraints. I would have loved to keep going in this car. It is fantastic fun. It looks great too with the wing, front aero, carbon hood, matte silver Enkeis and the TVR Chameleon Orange paint. I have been tweaking an FC of my own here and there and I think I have finally found a good rival/track buddy for it.

Erm... Loads? Between us I'd say 30-ish.

Easily. Hell I have at least 10 cars in various states of not-quite-finishedness sitting on my save for that matter.

I'd like to follow up on a car I've reviewed previously: the incredible RX-7 R400. I was running in my regular online room last night, with PP and tire restrictions. Well, a race came up at 530 PP and Sport Soft tires, so I dropped 6 PP from the RX-7 with the Engine limiter and joined in. The track was a Toscana custom track, full of those tight turns and high camber that will send nearly any RWD car into a spin where the back end just takes off on the outside of the turn and the front dives nose-first into the wall.

Well, I didn't win due to some driver error, but I've got to say that this car is nearly PERFECT for that track online. I had absolutely ZERO handling issues in any section of a very long and difficult track. In turns that normally require gentle throttle control and cautious exit, I was able to drop the hammer in this car and pull out without a hint of tire spin.

With all the problems I've had and seen from others with RWD cars on difficult custom tracks, I was awestruck at how beautifully this car handled. I've run tracks like this with a lot of different cars, and usually shy away from RWD due to the rear spin that you can see even in lower HP cars. No more. That was trmendously fun.

This is why the 7 is what it is. Originally it was 414hp/S3 tire regs that I mainly raced it under (keeping a solid 20hp below cap), then 550PP/S3, then 535PP/S3 when tires were taken out of the PP equation. Only car reliably faster was the NSX-R (expect an NSX-R Zero to drop if I ever get GT5 fired up long enough to check the settings on that note)... But generally not even those could keep pace at the Ring reliably as most are too twitchy for the average driver to keep in check for 2-3 laps. It's built to go quickly anywhere while still being very docile to drive. I've now redone the suspension and diff to make it nicer pretty much everywhere but never got around to updating it. Oh gearing and parts selection as well, it now has less torque and a small power choke to keep it at 535PP.

I thought you were going to PM me the setting for the Focus :(
Oh yeah. I'll do that later.

Thanks for the review! :D The S2000 is just a great car out of the box so it's hard to improve on it, but there is room, even if it's just a second.

And sweet colour scheme! It twins with the RKM Ricer. Both at Gion too. Did you mean to do that or is this a sweet co-incidence? :sly:

It's a beautiful day in Roma bella, and I'm lined up for completely legal *whistles* street race around the colluseum. The route has been loaded into our cars GPS', and has been dictated to be repeated 3 times. But looking at the grid I'm getting nervous. I', driving a new car, an Alfa Romeo 147 TI 2.0 TwinSpark. But it's not stock nor standard, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this race will be too easy. It has been tuned by the renowned tuning company RKM Motorsports. But the grid, as said, has me worried. Lining up in front of me (those 🤬 have given me a last place start) are cars like a Honda HSC, a Dodge Challenger SRT8, and a BMW M3 Coupe. But let's see how this turns out.

As the race start was signalled, and the cars broke out of the rolling start, my fears were confirmed. The HSC in front of me started pulling away immedietly. Although the Alfa was accelerating a lot faster than I had expected, it couldn't match up to the 350+ HP engines of the cars in front. But that all changed into the 1st corner. The handling allowed me to take the sweeper without braking, whcih already gave me an advantage over the cars in front.

I then outbraked the 2 cars in front of me, and proceeded to overtake the 3rd accelerating away from the 2nd corner and into the next. I overtook 2 cars in the sweeping left hander, and outbraked 3 more, including a Challenger SRT8, into the sharp right-hander.

I hold the Challenger and the following Esprit behind me on the back straight, and in the second turn after said straight I blow past a Maserati GranTurismo S, which proves the the mettle this little Alfa has.

The rest of the race was fairly uneventful. At the end of the 2nd lap there was a pretty heavy battle for 2nd place, which I won, but I was close to losing it again after a pretty heavy bout of understeer, but I feel it was more driver error than mechanical, although in a 230 HP FF car it was to be expected eventually.

Overall, I finished in 2nd, with the lead RUF BTR being 11 seconds ahead, a bit malplaced in this race TBH. But this little Alfa surprised me, positively. The understeer was no where near as bad as I had expected, and it was pretty zippy in general. Very fast handling response, everything taken into account.

On a scale of 1 to 10, it gets a 7.5. It's good. Not perfect (it never will be =P), but good, everything taken into consideration.

--------------------

I don't know how much of a review as a race report for me to pass time this is, but meh =P

I think if you changed the last couple of paragraphs into the results and not a score for the car, you'd have a nice race report.

But thanks for the race review report! :P I think it shows how capable a little hot hatch is when it beats a bunch of high power sports cars. Just a shame about the BTR, maybe the 8C should go avenge the 147. :P

Speaking of FF cars, words cannot express how much I hate that drivetrain.

Just ran the Crimson R on Cote d' Azur and the understeer just gave me the failure to communicate. On full braking, it would drop to the low revs immediately, even with lowered ride height to reduce weight transfer. It also feels like I have to keep it in the high revs or it would be potential disaster.

This may not sound like a usual review, but heck, I just want to hold back my ranting so that you guys won't throw grenades at me. But I couldn't forget that moment at Nouvelle... Bah, the car veered into the tire wall. Shye was there in her 458 too, that was really embarassing.

Too lazy to look for an RKM Evo X to test drive, I guess I'll do another ride in the S13 Speed Star (that happened to not suit my driving style, I know). See if I can adapt to it easily in Monte Carlo. For now, I'll leave the ITR for some repairs.

Oh, that's a bit of a shame…uMadson? favourite car has broken his heart and his wallet. Still, it gives you more time to work on it…

You're not going to like the RKM Ricer then. :D Not sure why you're finding so much understeer with the Crimson R though. Of course if you try and make it take corners as fast as a car with sports softs it going to fail at it. Comfort tyres need you to take corners at a lower speed usually.

I hate FF cars, too. The understeer bothers me alot since I'm use to using FR, MR and 4WD cars all the time. I know the 4WD cars have understeer but it isn't as bad as an FF car's. I tried to use the same car on that course and it really made me mad at how hard it was to turn and the low revs. It is great for people who aren't use to the game (and kinda need some help with learning it's physics after coming from a game where physics don't apply) when starting out. My friend had the same problems and I gave him a Vit. he is still having problems racing with the FR he got, but he is getting use to it. That is truthfully the primary function of FF cars and that tune. (unless you want to have fun, then that is something completely different.)

I'm sure I have a replacement for it. Like my fully riced Golf, for instance...although that handles weirdly well. :boggled: On Comfort Softs no less :ill:

Now that I have the signal from the original tuner... 👍

It's doors got busted though because of the impact (well, the car didn't hit the wall head-on, it just slipped a bit and the right side collided right-on), and that silly girl's gonna have a bit of schadenfreude to enjoy, so I might as well leave it in the garage for a while. :P

Now my dilemma is... RKM S13: to drift or to race? I practiced a full-lap drift session too in a bone-stock Corvette Stingray C3, and did a few hot laps in that Crimson R (as I've said...), uhh maybe I should go with a time trial first before swapping to comfort tires and doing drifting.

And oh, just another bit, release the RKM Ricer later then I'll see if it's either an FnF wannabe or a good car to shut other ricers up.

Maybe it's my experience that was giving me the problems too, since I'm also used to the high-end supercars in-game.

Is that really it's name? The 'RKM Ricer'? So is it going to have an exhaust as big as your head and shiny chrome wheels along with a stereo system so big that the back seats were needed to be taken out…and an even shinier paint scheme than the TVR orange…

Hey Roj, do I get a tune for that review? I know I'm a tuner myself, but there's a car I want to see it's full potential...

Ohhh, what is it? Is it a FF, FR, MR or 4WD? Is it from Japan, or Europe or the US? And I'll give your new cars a review soon, but it might be next week since I'm working on something at the moment…

I'm doing OSHA 10 online. Regarding Fall Protection. I work on the floors on constitution sites. How does this effect me? (I know this is off-topic)

I want it to NOT be FF. (That is on topic)

Ah, the one you're bringing to driftking's story race later on? :D

Well you're paying for the repairs. :P

I tuned the S13 to race but it's apparently a nice drifter so, drift it? :P

The RKM Ricer will get released after it gets it's on-screen debut in the race reports section.

I think that could be it. 💡

Yes. The RKM Ricer. :P It's the orange Civic I've been posting up the last few pages. It has a fart can, GT wing, chrome wheels and TVR orange paint. :D

Yeah, but I'm going on holiday soon so I'm not accepting anymore requests until August. :)
"RKM Ricer" Really? I thought I heard the oddest of names, but you constantly best the odd names.

Suits the car. :P

Wow, the Integra Type-R turbo seems menacing with all those horsepowers :dopey: I like the Integra, and I like turbos, so I'm gonna give it a go. :mischievous:

And RKM Ricer...That's a great name for a car that looks like that

Yeah, but still, FF's still disappoint me. I guess I'm off to bed now, I'll be setting the S13 up for a shakedown tomorrow. 👍
