Because they use the Porsche body panels and body but fit different or modified internals. This is why they are recognised as a separate manufacturer in Germany.
 
Because they're built upon unmarked, Porsche-built chassis. Nearly every single other thing in the car though, is Ruf produced. They do not tune the engines, they do not tune the suspension, they do not tune anything. If they receive an engine, they dismantle it & completely rebuild it to what they want. This is pretty much, the standard procedure on anything else they may receive from Porsche.

The only Porsche's tuned by Ruf are those that are customer cars.


As for any reason as to why they chose the infamous Porsche 911 design to originally build upon, it is because Alois believed that Porsche made the perfect platform for what he thought could make the perfect sports car.
