Tada Wants The BreezeFrees To Spawn Multiple Models

Jalopnik

I like the idea of them making a sedan or shooting brake/wagon but it somewhat goes against the main purpose of the car.

As a way to get their money back from the (long) development of the car, it isn't a terrible idea. The idea of a lightweight performance sedan with rear-drive sounds pretty good to me, although it would seem like something that would fit in more with Subaru and less with Scion. Unless it's a straight-up Toyota, then, that'd be awesome.

A sedan variant would be nice, and if they could bring the price down even further due to economies of scale, it might even be an alternative to a boring, base-level Camry or Accord.

A slower, more cramped alternative, but hey... I wouldn't complain much.

Basically, a modern day E30. That's what I keep thinking. I don't think that's a terrible idea if they can keep the price under $30K.

A sedan version would be great, and a shooting brake is always col. However, styling both would be difficult, they would have to work very hard to make them look good.

I'm afraid they will try to do one of those 'four door coupes' (Rapide, Panamera, etc) and it will be horrible. If they make a sedan, I hope it has proper sedan proportions.

I imagine it would end up resembling a mini Lexus IS. The wheelbase of the original Altezza was only a few inches longer.

I won't let this thread die!

Toyota Press Release
Toyota has recently unveiled a special edition of the GT 86, named the Cup Edition, which will set you back for 2,860 euros more than the standard version.

The model has an Alcantara wrapped sports steering wheel, an individually numbered aluminum plaque, Cup Edition lettering, red stitching and more. I wonder what will the "VIP customer event" be?

^ Ugh, just an appearance kit? Meh, if it was like the RC model from JDM-land then it deserves the 'Cup' name. :indiff:

I testdrove 2 GT86's today.

Had the time of my life in those little buggers, so much fun! It literally felt like taking an exited dog for a walk who then makes you a happy boy.

I was rather careful towards the automatic, but I absolutely loved it. Put it into D-mode and it's just like any other automatic. Great for just cruising around. But then you pull the shifter to the left of the D, and it goes into the auto-manual setting, with the pedal shifters to control. So even though it's an automatic, you can perfectly control it the way you want it to react.

I will admit I still preferred shifting the manual gearbox version when I gave it a bootfull. But both versions seemed to have 2 different sport-mode settings, which would lead me to believe it sharpens up the car even more. So even the automatic would probably be a lot sharper.

I also really liked stepping out of a turbo-powered car for a bit, and stepping into a car that can deliver the power you're looking for whenever you want to. Although it does feel like the automatic desperately searches for gears when you're driving in D-mode and you put the accelerator pedal down.

As this is a car I'm going to daily, the automatic really feels like a superior choice. The clutch travel on the manual version felt really short, yet rather heavy. And then there was the gas pedal which you had to give a little bit of travel before you were actually giving it any gas. So both pedals seemed to be mirrored in terms of how they felt which required me some time to get used to in order to go through some fluent gearchanges.

What I liked best about it is the entire feel of the car. It's comfortable, and with 2 it even has more space inside than you would expect. I'm 1m87, and never did I feel I was sitting uncomfortable, or cramped. The steering wheel felt perfect, and the car as a whole felt so purposeful. You could just feel how light the car was, you could just feel the sporty-nes of it. And yet when just cruising around it feels like any other car.

Except when you floor it, and there is that glorious sound coming from behind you. Oh how I loved how that little boxer engine revved. Very quiet at low revs, but then around 5k revs it just opens up.

It's probably just me being used to driving a comfortable and very quiet Saab now, but the GT86 felt very stiff, and I rather liked it. I didn't feel saggy, soft, nor did I feel any roll. I just feels like an exited car waiting to be taken out by its drivers to have some fun. And yet I sat arguably more comfortable in it, then in the Saab.

I don't really know what more I could possibly say about this car. I just loved it, and I want it even more than I already wanted it so badly previous to this day. I need to own this little fun car.

I was rather unbespoken of which colour to choose. But after having seen it in white, orange and black today I've set my mind on a choice. It just looks better in black.

Black GT86 with an automatic gearbox, that's the conclusion of today! 👍

Thanks for the read, Bram; I gotta get a drive in one even if I am living at poverty level. I must own this car someday.

Don't remember Saab clutches from back in the day when I testdrove a few, but BRZ clutch is the lightest of all I've ever tried.
And I feel nothing like that in the gas pedal. It's fairly linear IMO.

Great write up Bram, makes me want to go out and test one out. 👍

I have heard alot of good to mixed reviews about the FR/86/BR and their durability for daily and even for the track!

I'm thinking about the BRZ, especially the STi version coming out soon. I'll still will take the FR-S also and see what she can do. But I'm still looking for a STi or Evo 8/9 GSR for daily and for the track, even if I can find one, a Supra or a Z32 300ZX. I'm also thinking about the Dodge Challenger RT after driving one, so I'm pretty stumped here. :boggled::lol:

But if I got one, maybe a red or white FR-S 6MT or the BRZ in blue. 💡

Looks a lot better with the top then I was expecting, overall consistant with the shape of the coupe. I can't help but ask though why a soft roof? Seems like many cars are going metal roof.

Weight. A metal hood adds a lot of weight. I agree with you, it looks quite good.

Can anyone here confirm differences in the taillights between all 3 models?

I knew the headlights were different on all three models but, I didn't really know that there were differences in the taillights.

Just looked at some photos and see major differences in the headlights but no differences in the tails.

I couldn't find anything online. We were listing some taillights for them and the boss said don't list them for the GT86 as he thinks that they are different. I couldn't find anything to confirm.

Yeah physically the dimensions/shape is the same. Only difference I could come up with would be wiring but it doesn't matter now anyway we'll be listing them for all three cars. 👍
