I'm fairly sure it was a regulation of sportscar racing, and may still be; for example, in an open top LMP you'll see a space for a passenger seat (not that it'll ever be used, though). The two 917's in that picture are most likely replicas given that they are road registered.


And now, what is probably the most expensive line up of race cars assembled in one photograph...

That photo was taken on a closed test track, the Martini car is owned by Count Rossi and the Gulf car is an ex-racer, both are genuine 917's.
