Shelving Shift-2 Until Patched.

I've decided to shelve the game until EA/SMS release the patch. I'm currently at level 20 with nearly 30% completion. At this point.., I'm just not willing to put anymore time into this title until they fix the issues.

I'm not going to say Shift-2 is a complete failure or a pile or crap.., because it's not. Shift-2 is a decent game. However.., the problem is that there is a REALLY good game inside that has not yet been released to us (which is why the patch needs to be released..., and soon!).

To those of you who are using the PS3 version with a wheel.., naturally you're getting a much better experience than those of us who are not. I will say however.., that if you really want to get a better understanding of what an absolute train wreck Shift-2 is in terms of physics for non wheel users.., I suggest unplugging your wheels and have a go at it with the DS3. It's downright shameful.

I know quite a few here don't own or haven't even played the first Shift. My suggestion to you is either borrow or rent a copy of that title. However.., when you play it., make sure your console is not hooked up to the internet. Play the original Shift WITHOUT the patch work. Then compare the feeling of that title (unpatched) to Shift-2 unpatched.

I honestly think Shift-2 is going to turn out to be one hell of a good racing title. I just don't think we're going to get that until they patch it. Shift-2 has A LOT of good stuff going for it. It fills voids where many other console titles (even the big ones) seriously lack. However.., all of that greatness is literally moot when the physics for gamepad players is at this horrific level we have currently.

You can tweak the controller settings until you're blue in the face.., but no amount of tweaking from our end is going to rectify the shotty physics and controller issues that are present. Some of these issues can only be addressed with a patch update. The coding needs reworked in some areas.., and we console users can't do this.

I shelved mine at 60% completion. It wasnt even the crazy physics issues that caused me to stop playing but rather the absolutely hopelessnes with Radeon drivers. Graphical glitches galore, my drivers actually crashing, and the latest driver set released that i installed reduced my FPS by about 20 and caused all the cars to turn black with no textures or shadows/reflections.

Basically, the game does not work properly with catalyst drivers at the moment.

I got the trick so you can play with shift2 for some time. Only play 30 minutes at a time, then the issues won't bug you as much :)
I play on a PS3 with a wheel it's not good either, have you tried drifting with a wheel?

Ah... sometimes it's good to be reminded why I gave up on PC gaming and got into consoles (although Shift's graphics on PC admittedly look gorgeous).

I popped Shift-1 back into my PS3 and to honest.., (even though it's missing some features compared to Shift-2). The handling and DS3 input is just more polished IMO. Granted the cars tend to drift a little.., but the steering IMO is just so much better in the original Shift.

It's not to say that Shift-2 can't get there. I think it's more than capable of getting there (and even performing better). It just isn't there yet.., and we badly need a good patch from them.

Strangely the game worked fine for the first 2 days, a few graphical glitches in the garage section, but a tiny thing. Occasionally it would crash my drivers and then they would reset and i would keep playing.

But then occasionally (once every 2 hours maybe?) turned into every race, which just killed it, unplayable like that. The new drivers were meant to fix it but just totally ruined it, they didnt crash but the game was then running at unplayable FPS with no textures on the cars.

It is not a normal thing with pc games though, i've never had this issue before, and aside from the issue when the graphics do work they are probably the best i have seen in any racing game (aside from car models, GT5 premiums get that trophy)

Stop crying. I'm using a DS3 with no modifications to deadzones or sensitivities and am still enjoying it. The only thing that annoys me is the fear of freezing, no more.

To be fair, if you're ok with it then that is fine for you. But considering half of the internet Shift 2 forums are full of people complaining about the input lag and the shoddy physics... i'd say its a genuine concern.

If you wanna race (and be fast) you need a wheel, if you want to drift (and be good) you need a gamepad.

The more people cry, the more likely it is they will fix it and the more likely it is the game will be improved.

Sadly i do not think anything related to physics can be fixed, if you create an elite mode which i would presume is the most direct access to their physics engine and it's not good, there nothing else you can do aside from redoing the physics engine.

Having separate* physics for drifting should have been a clue, at least for me. :)

If you're happy with the DS3 set up then that's fine. However.., keep in mind that the majority does not agree with you on this issue. As stated by another member.., there is a large number of people who are very unhappy with the DS3 set up in this title.

It's the exact same thing as the first Shift. When it was released.., right out of the box some of the first complaints were physics and controller issues. We're seeing the same problems with Shift-2. With Shift-1 everyone was speculating that they couldn't patch it enough to be playable.., but they did. Same thing will happen with Shift-2.

I'm thinking that there will probably be a patch, but as a wheel user on PS3 I am having way too much fun with Shift 2 to shelf it until then. Even if it were never patched I think I'd play it regularly for a good long time. I'm either too crappy to notice the input lag or it isn't happening to me. Floatiness? You can dial a lot of it out. What's left is left, I guess. It isn't enough to bug me.

Aside from these problems you state here, would you recommend buying the game? I've picked it up in stores a few times and wussed out. Is it enough of a sim to keep GT5 players happy?

What's different between his posts and YOUR crying about GT5?💡

I'm using a DS3, have had no issues with it as of late and hold to 2 world records, every game needs the Autolog, it's just awesome :D

Sorry, have to disagree... a very small "percentage" of Shift 2 buyers are commenting in forums on the Internet - it just doesn't happen in a "large percentage". Granted, there are more negative comments than EA would like to hear but most buyers are living with the deficiencies, like most games, and having a ball. I have bigger issues in my life to be concerned about... making my mortgage payments, keeping my real car in order (even though is does to have some steering lag and feels a little floaty :~].), etc..
I have always only played driving/racing games over the past 20 years on consoles and computers. Never found a perfect game - they are all games!
Nothing handles, is connected to the road, or performs like the REAL cars I have ever owned (2 Corvettes, 2 Carmaros, 2 Cudas, a TransAm, a BMW 3-series, many more and now a G35).
When I find some free time currently GT5 and Shift 2 are on my list to fill it.

That Shift2 DVD Limited lasted 15 minutes inside my ps3.

Why?
1 - HDReady Ps2 sh**ty graphics. AWFUL!!!!
2 - T500RS user here...so no FFB on a official branded ps3 product!
3 - Lag? What Lag? That's not imput Lag...it's premonition driving. Must go and dust my crystal ball, to forseen braking and turning points...NOT!

So, thank you EA for falling in your fabulous marketing scam! Will nail your lovely DVD on the wall for remembrance!:dunce:

How are you disagreeing with me? Sure only a small percentage of players use the forums, and a large percentage of the ones who do are complaining.

The games input lags, it is a setting that some people have found in the files that cannot be edited, a delay. There are a few different things that with tweaking could improve the game massively.

Sure you have bigger problems in your life, but anybody can spend 2 minutes of their time to go onto a forum and moan about something, and many people do. Moaning gets things fixed, not always but often enough in the games industry these days, if you moan enough they will hear you.

I had fun with the game, but the graphics drivers support is actually broken, its not something that makes the game annoying, im talking about something that causes the game to stop working quite often, something that people are experiencing accross the board in various forms. Even if they do not fix the input lag issue, the game needs to have issues like freezing up and driver support fixed.

I've adjusted the wheel settings endlessly but still can't find something that's not 'loosey-goosey' (I realize that's not the technical term). For example coming out of the second hairpin on Suzuka I can't get the car going down the straight, well, straight, always one way or the other but never in the line I want... :nervous:

Knowing what I know now, I would have waited a month or more until patched or price went down. I had it on reserve at Gamestop...hopefully they will patch it in the near future. Life can be frustrating enough without cursing at a video game and wanting to smash a DS3 controller :grumpy: SO, I went back to GT5 for right now.

Picking up a used copy at Gamestop today. Luckily they have a good return policy on used games, and you can return them within 5 days for a full refund if you don't like them.
Really hoping I don't need to do that though....

Having not really played the original shift very much,( in fact hardly at all!)how long was it before the game was issued with an update and did it sort any issues out?

This game ain't going on the shelf, it's going in the bin. It's truely awful. Don't waste your cash on this POS. The shop I got it from offers a full refund if brought back in the first 2weeks after release, but I couldn't bring it back, coz doing so would inflict the misery of "playing" it on some poor innocent punter

yeah im only at 25% completion but i think i will go back to gt5 for my drift team for a while but you can garentee once that patch comes out shift will be back in my ps3

I really hope a patch comes out. I just shut the game off out of frustration trying to get first place on a time trial. Its really hard hitting the apex's and clipping points on turns when you have that much lag. I either end up to far into the corner and in the grass or worse. I find myself sticking to the middle of the track just for safety due to the lag. I like the game alot don't get me wrong. But I simply cannot try to be good at it with the steering lag the way it is.

I've played with the settings on my DFGT and I simply cannot get rid of it. I hope they patch it because this game has some potential to be just a really fun racer. Back to GT5 for now. Good thing I only rented this game.
