As the title says, I've been thinking of picking the game up.

But, if it's like Shift's physics, I guess I'll just skip the umtenth NFS game and go for MCLA instead (last bad experience was Hot Pursuit).

It is like Shift's physics, but they aren't terrible. You HAVE to know how to tune in order to get the most fun out of the game. The default settings on the control settings and all the cars need work, so be prepared to get frustrated with some career events. When you are tuning, the live telemetry is a godsend since you'll know a lot more about what the car is doing than in GT5. A wheel is recommended, but not required.

Online, it's no where near GT5. Online lobbies have to tuning feature, voting, kicking feature, or a way to filter assists. On top of that, the location/collision detection is pretty bad depending on lag. You see where when two cars collide, one car may be affected instead of both cars, and neither cars would have to touch in some cases.

Even with all the flaws, you STILL should pick it up. Don't expect a poor man's Forza or GT5 because you'll leave yourself disappointed. This game isn't about taking stock cars on sport hard tires on Nords. This game is about building cars and enjoying the racing against opponents.

The stupid auto countersteer is still there. I purchased it and played it for about a week. Thats the only thing that keeps me from playing it.

If you are looking for a typical NFS game, this is not it - those are much more arcade. NFS shouldn't even be on the box and am not sure why EA did that. As Texas mentioned, it takes some tuning to get the most out of the cars. Most guys that understand car tuning (caster/camber, spring rates, roll bars, gearing, damper, etc.) like the game.
I myself am not a big tuner but had quite a few hours of great racing from Shift 2 on the PS3. I actually purchased another copy recently for the Xbox as that is where I spend most of the racing these days (Forza 4) even though I have a cross-platform wheel/pedals (Fanatec). It isn't anywhere near perfect but the racing immersion factor is very high. Not sure how it is with a pad as I have only been racing with my wheel setup.

I did not know about this in either game.

Is this why sometimes I end up traveling down a straightaway continuously correcting because the damn car gets a shimmy of some sort. Its tremendously annoying.
