Shift Patch 1.02 Review

I thought it might make more sense to review the effects and effectiveness of the recent patch in a new thread…

I’ll start by saying I’m playing on a 40GB PS3 (about 2 years old), that was updated recently to version 3.10. I downloaded the Shift patch as soon as it went online and have about 4 hours of play time with it.

-General game stability and performance improvements On my system, using the G25 wheel & pedals and playing in Career Mode with Tier 3 and up cars I still see major framerate and slowdown issues in races with 10 or more cars. The Invitational race at Spa with the Carrera GT is ridiculously slow on my system. The lap which in real time should take 2 minutes and 30 seconds or so takes about 3 minutes in real time, while the game lap time says 2 mins 30 seconds. Not good! So, on my system, I don’t see the game performance improvements that the patch promised.

-Improved car handling and the bump-bounce problems Both of these are greatly improved, although some cars like the Corvette for instance seem to have actually lost a bit of traction, the BMW e46 M3 & e92 M3 have definitely been improved and the Porsche 911 GT3 & GT2 have been fixed. So overall the patch worked as advertised for these problems.

- Fixed car tuning settings sometimes not taking effect This has also been fixed in the cars I’ve checked that had this problem. For instance, you can actually set the Aerodynamic downforce to the maximum (right) slider position and it doesn’t re-set itself.

- Fixed invitational event cars getting their setups corrupted and becoming undrivable (e.g. Veryon and Carrera GT) These have been fixed, well the setups aren’t corrupted at least, but the framerates on both of these races are awful on my machine.

So, although some of the major issues like the bouncing problem and tuning issues have been successfully taken care of, at least for me the game performance is still very poor. It may be only the 40GB PS3’s that have these issues with slowdowns, I don’t know. I’d be interested to hear from others who are having the same problem.

I ran the Carrera GT invitational the other day (prior patch) and framerate was fine - 250GB slim

I like the patch, and I,ve noticed that the bumpines is gone and I acutally have some control over my cars.

I've noticed something else. Some of my cars have gotten faster (Gallardo Lp 560-4, Works elise 111r, Dodge viper), while some others have gotten a bit slower (Works 370z, Porsche Cayman). Maybe it's to balance things out, but for whatever reason, this is good!

Hi Manny I run the same PS3 and overall the patch has been an improvement. I can now run the racers that I couldn't before (Corvette and Carrera GT).
The framerate and slowdown issues are better but still there on road america and tokyo sprint tracks, two tracks that where bad before but not as bad now.
Haven't tried on-line play yet, I hope the patch has fixed it so I can enjoy racing with friends again.
No bouncing cars "yeah" and the tuning is good now, I can start setting up my cars properly now.:sly:
I can't say great job EA, but Shift is better that what it was.
C U all on the track.👍

I'm on PC so haven't got the patch yet, but the Works cars needed a bit of balancing. I certainly hadn't raced them all, but the Corvette seemed to be by far the fastest. The Viper seemed incredibly slow, especially at its top end, given its power and also handled pretty badly (I dont understand why the viper should be drifting so much more than various other cars).

I'm interested to try it out and see how they modified the performance of cars.

Re the handling on various cars, and the bumps, its certainly an improvement but it isn't huge, cars still float around corners. I noticed that alot of my own advanced cars settings moved up a setting which was strange.

On another note, online at the moment just can't cope with alot of PS3 players trying to test out the new patch again. I played it for hours yesterday and got fed up of the EA saying the servers were full.

OK when I did enter races it was great becuase there were loads of people (12) racing (destruction derby if your near the back) but only half that actually finished the race with more and more racers quiting now (myself included when I got fed up of being rammed!), but trying to find space to host a game just didn't happen becuase of EA's lack of servers. Are we going to have the same when the dlc is released? EA sort it out, that is not acceptable!

Not being able to host a race (try it at busy times!) to my preference restriction is anoying, becuase so many people want to race unlimited (and all selecting Zondas zzzzz) or on boring ovals, its far more enjoyable running 6 or 10 with all types of different models. Can't people host anything else?

Slowdown online does appear to be effected even more if the host has a poor connection, going by some conversations I heared when racing.

I'm not surprise and impress at all...

Well, all of the wait for GT5, new LFS & NFS shift patch had let me down and therefore I had gone back to re-register i-racing again after leaving it for 1 year.

Oh what a difference! I-racing is a blast and it fills my appetite although i'm not an avid sim-racer. The physics are so superb. Conversely from what I thought before, mainly because I was running on a slower computer with only 30fps. Now with a new graphic card (same old PC), I'm running it at 90-100fps and it does really make a difference and I really start appreciating the physics. What a sim! Love every moment of it and I start getting addicted.

Well done EA for winning my heart through your advertisement and nicking my £55 on a special edition version. Your patch does not impress me at all. I definitely have got 'shifted' ever since (I could have another year of subscription on i-racing from that amount of money…ARGHH!!)....

Might be nice if you told us what you're not surprised or impressed with in a little more detail..........

I'm not surprised they did not fix the car bumpiness and the frame rate issue completely so that is why I am not impressed with this patch and the game as a whole. Still getting the issues although it has slightly improved. Sorry, I probably had too much expectation from this game..:indiff:

I decided to pop in SHIFT after a few months of not touching it. After the patch i took the Elise 111r on Laguna Seca and after the first 1-1/2 laps i was done with the game again. I was reminded how crappy the game fealt and more noticably the graphics looked like they got worse, but thats because i have been playing Forza3 and GT5p. I'm done with this game and trading it in tonight with World at war for Assasins Creed 2. It's a shame even with the G25 i can't find a way to enjoy the game any longer. I just don't feel like i'm connected to the road at all, it's this floaty arcadey feeling, i have tried a lot of the suggested wheel settings and sensitivities but all of them just don't quite get it if you ask me. I wish this wasn't the case because of the good selection of cars and tracks...

I tried the patch with my Miata, and got all kinds of framerate issues and halting gameplay that I didn't have before.

EA is absolute rubbish. I can't even laugh at how bad this game is. Alas, I shall cry. And sell the game.

I really don't understand why some people like you and I, have framerate issues and others seem absolutely thrilled with this patch...

I mean this is a console game and isn't like a PC which is processor and graphics card dependant. Assuming the console is in good working order (which mine seems to be), they should all run the same right?

I haven't had any frame rate issues, or handling problems, except at the usual spots at Ambush Canyon.

I wish they would have just smoothed those certain bumps out of the track, or just do away with A.C. altogether. Not that I don't want bumps on a racing surface, it's just these three particular turns are crippling in a tight race, and it never seems to affect the AI like it does me.

The only explanation I could imagine is the TV you're playing the games on.
Some people play in SD and 4:3, others play in 720p or 1.080p and 16:9.

That's a big difference in pixels to calculate.

I'm still playing in SD and the game runs solid.

I'd like to chime in with my initial impressions of about 30 minutes with this new patch:

I wish that when racing with controller config 3 that L3 for EA Messenger was disabled. It's really frustrating to brake hard and accidentally hit L3 and have EA Messenger appear and then try to remember how your car was setup for a corner when you resume.

I still experience slow-motion on some tracks with some cars. For instance, playing time eliminator at Brands Hatch GP with the GT-R Invitational Event, slow-mo for a good portion of the race. I also race "front of bumper" view and there was still the bug of the audio clipping / cutting out.

Time Eliminator at Silverstone National Invitational Event with the LF-A also experienced slow-mo. However, the LF-A seems much more civil to drive. It felt more like a drift car in the Horse Thief Manufacturer Tier 4 Competition than a road car. I just replayed that race and it actually felt drivable. The AI however....

So far, mixed impressed. I'm looking for some races with fellow GTPers to see if car tunes do get applied to your car when racing online.

You know what... I bet that's it. I have a 42" Panasonic 720p, 16:9 monitor set up in front of the racing seat and G25 wheel & pedals with an Onkyo 5 speaker & big sub-woofer. All of it is connected by HDMI cables. It's a great setup, but I guess maybe I'm paying for it in the low framerates. :(

I'll have to check and see if I can lower the picture quality and see if gameplay improves.

Thanks LOonIE.

Edit: No, I stand corrected. Lowering the game resolution to 480p and running the Carrera GT race at Spa showed only a slight improvement to the framerate (and I may be imagining that!). So whatever it is it doesn't seem to be my setup.

I got tired of this game, it doesn't appeal to me anymore, next time I'll be playing it, I'll be driving the old school muscle cars around the 'ring and that's it. I give up the career and the multiplayer.

I'm playing in SD as well, with component cables. And yet, the gameplay was very halting.

Another idea for different frame rate experience:

SD: PAL runs @50Hz, NTSC @60Hz.

So if you run on a PAL PS3 in SD only 25fps need to be calculated.

I downloaded the patch yesterday and played for about 2 hours. I hadn't touched the game since mid October so my base level comparisons may be a bit off.

I did notice the handling of many cars felt a bit more 'stable' when driven 'quickly' but not quite at the limit. And I'm not just talking about the crazy bouncing but general stability and drivabilty felt better. For me this was positive. It wasn't a huge change but more than I was hoping for. When you really push the cars and try and reach those few tenths in your lap times, there's something still 'off' in the physics department. If you're not expecting any big changes you'll probably see it as was a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, I did notice some frame skipping at Spa where I never noticed it before. And that stupid bug where the steering wheel moves on it's on during replays wasn't fixed. And some basic things like not keeping track of your own lap times are just a real let down.

I actually never noticed the audio clipping until after the patch. Particularly the Porsche GT2 & GT3.. it is utterly nauseating. I don't experience the clipping when I race the same track with other Tier3 vehicles.

AND.. the red/green fastest track time notifier is still buggy...

The rest of the tweaks have been very much appreciated.. but I would expect such a patch, which took forever to put out, to address at least the the bugs customers had already identified. :indiff:

Not to seem do dunce like here, but what is SD?

I know what HDMI and S-video are, but I'm not familiar with the SD. :(

I run mine through the good old RCA cables, and have never had a frame rate problem. (mainly because I got a PS3 instead of a new tv. :D)

Standard definition, as opposed to HD= High Definition :)

Will have to try this again, just to check how it is now with the patch. But I'm having so much fun with SCC I doubt I will be interested.

I have an "off the wall" question for Vancouver Blade :)

Will the effects of the recent patch be evident in the free download demo from the PSN store ?

Well the Patch killed my tier 3 savegame, so I've had to start again. They've definitely improved the car control, but there is still a bug where the Audio gets corrupted sometimes, usually in one of the Car Duels. I'll be interested to see whether the Carrera GT is controllable this time around, it was such a disappointment to open its race at Spa and find that it was undriveable.

SCC will be my next purchase since Shift continues to frustrate. I loved Ferrari Challenge and had the best online racing I've ever had with that game. Hopefully the online community for SCC is larger than FC... I hate waiting in lobbies! :)

I am fully aware that I am not, in fact, Vancouver Blade. Moving on: I don't think they will update the demo. Either way, the patch doesn't change the very core of the game, so the demo will still be able to do its job: give you a vague idea of the full game.

I am also curious to try this with the patch , but like many others SCC is so good that I don't see myself having time for SHIFT.
